View Full Version : Broncos have to trim their roster down to 75 players by Tuesday

1. Tight end Jeff Heuerman

He's not getting cut, just officially placed on the season-ending Injured Reserve list. This will clear up one roster spot. They haven't been able to officially place him on this list because it would have placed him on waivers first.

2. Linebacker Lerentee McCray

The veteran outside linebacker has missed the majority of the summer with an injury, and has fallen behind rookie Shane Ray and the impressive Shaq Barrett since. The question here will be if/when this happens, will they place him on the IR list or waive him.

Either way, his roster spot has been taken.

3. Running back Jeremy Stewart

This easily could be Kapri Bibbs, but I see them sticking with the younger Bibbs for now. With C.J. Anderson and probably Ronnie Hillman not playing a ton(of at all) during the final preseason game look for Juwan Thompson, Montee Ball, and Bibbs/Stewart to get the carries.

4. Offensive tackle Charles Sweeton

He was signed during Training Camp to provide depth at the position. He was a longshot to ever make the team.

5. Offensive tackle Kyle Roberts

Kyle Roberts was signed as a undrafted free agent for the Broncos this spring. He played with the third team, and with him behind Michael Schofield and Chris Clark, there's not a spot for him.

6. Linebacker Chase Vaughn

He's a great story, but such a long shot to make the team. The outside linebacker position is deep for the Broncos, and there just isn't a roster spot for him.

7. Cornerback Tevrin Brandon

Brandon didn't play at all last night, so it's safe to assume he will not be making the roster. With guys like Lorenzo Doss, Nixon, Tony Carter and Curtis Marsh all ahead of him on the roster, it will be hard for him to survive the first series for cuts.

8. Tight End Jake Murphy

He was added after Marvin Austin was placed on the season-ending Injured Reserve last week. Murphy hasn't played in a game, and the Broncos added tight end Dan Light this week. So it's unlikely he sticks around very long.

9. Linebacker Reggie Walker

The veteran linebacker was signed this winter but hasn't really made an impact on the team. Players like Corey Nelson and Zaire Anderson have moved ahead of him on the depth chart. So I could see him being cut.

10. Wide receiver Corbin Louks:

The hero of the second preseason game could be among the first cuts. With players like Bennie Fowler, Nathan Palmer, Isaiah Burse, and Jordan Taylor ahead of him, there might not be a spot for him.

11. Safety Ross Madison

He didn't play at all Saturday night and looks to be behind rookie safety Josh Furman on the depth chart.

12. Quarterback Zac Dysert

Dysert hasn't seen the field since his awful performance against the Seahawks week one. I think we'll see a lot of Brock Osweiler Thursday, with rookie Trevor Siemian getting the rest of the snaps.

13. Defensive tackle Chuka Ndulue

The Broncos appear set at nose tackle with Sylvester Williams, Darius Kilgo, and Sione Fua being their three guys. So this doesn't leave a spot for the undrafted rookie Ndulue.

14. Outside linebacker Danny Mason

The undrafted rookie hasn't done a lot to get recognized this summer. It looks like he's behind Gerald Rivers on the depth chart as well.

15. Punter Spencer Lanning

I think they will stick with Colquitt as the punter. It's possible this battle could go into the final preseason game.

Because he's the incumbent and we just negotiated a pay cut with him? I don't know. I'm not saying that he SHOULD win the job, but I think he's the favorite at this point. I'd be a little surprised to see Lanning stay, even if that's what I hope for.

Until Lattimer has a fair shot, I'm not ready to say whether or not he's following the same path as Ball. But we sure did miss an opportunity with Lacy. Same could be said for a lot of other draft picks in recent years though.

from PFT;

The Broncos cut quarterback Zac Dysert and veteran linebacker Reggie Walker among a flurry of cuts, as they pared their roster to 79 in advance of tomorrow’s deadline.

They also placed tight end Jeff Heuerman, this year’s third-round pick, on injured reserve.

The Broncos waived cornerback Tevrin Brandon, guard Andre Davis, tight end Joe Don Duncan, punter Spencer Lanning, safety Ross Madison, tight end Jake Murphy, running back Jeremy Stewart and linebacker Chase Vaughn.

Broncos ask Colquitt to take a pay cut.

Colquitt obliges.

Colquitt's kicks still aren't looking any better than last season (Oh yay...ya mean they're short and no air time...YAY!!)

Broncos sign the other punter.

Colquitt is said to be pissed off about taking a pay cut and the Broncos still bringing in another punter.

Other punter looks strong and to be exactly what the punting game has been missing.

Colquitt feeling the pressure has a decent punt (One..1...ooooohhhh ahhhhhh)

Broncos cut other punter after not giving him one freaking punt in SF game. Hey Broncos, we know what Colquitt can do, how about seeing what the other guy can do?

Colquitt laughs and will return to his piddly punt average and no hang time.

Broncos will blame the Special Teams as a unit instead of pointing out the glaring reality...when your damn punter averages 39 yards and no air time...no one can cover.

Annoying.

i'm gonna be bummed if/when fowler gets cut. . . they should keep that kid. . .

I guess the question is whether he beats out Caldwell. Norwood seems to be a lock at this point and if they're only keeping five WR, there's not a lot of wiggle room. Fowler has impressed me, though, so I hope they find a way to keep him.

Why on Earth would we bring a guy back who is one hit away from being a noodle brain? And even when he did receive punts for Denver while he was on the team, he never did much with them. It was like having a slow, small white guy back there who can't afford to take a big hit.

I think that was their plan when they signed Sanders to begin with. Decker was doing both occasionally but i think with Sanders speed made him more valuable in that regard. When they went after him i think that was part of what they wanted out of him.

from article:

1. WANT TO STICK? MAKE IT HAPPEN ON SPECIAL TEAMS.

It can be argued that no position is deeper than wide receiver, from a pair of Pro Bowlers on the top line of the depth chart (Demaryius Thomas and Emmanuel Sanders) to Cody Latimer, Andre Caldwell and Jordan Norwood through players like Bennie Fowler, Isaiah Burse, Jordan Taylor and Corbin Louks. All have made impressions and big plays, whether on the practice field or the three preseason games to date.

But it will be special teams that separates the group.

"It's huge," Head Coach Gary Kubiak said. "We could be a five-, six-, seven-receiver football team depending on how things play out here over the weekend. It's very big. Bubba's been a good special teams player and [WR] Bennie has been good. Bennie's been nicked a little bit. He's got a sore hip, so I'm hoping he's ready to go Thursday. It will be a big part.

"You'll see Taylor play a lot more special teams in this game, also."

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. -- As the preseason draws to a close and the Denver Broncos' regular-season opener approaches, the team has answered a smattering of questions that trailed them into training camp.

They have made decisions in the offensive line, including signing two-time Pro Bowl selection Evan Mathis to a 1-year, incentive-heavy deal last week. They have settled on a pecking order at running back with Ronnie Hillman having earned the No. 2 spot behind C.J. Anderson.

And they have made their picks at kicker and punter -- Brandon McManus and Britton Colquitt -- and avoided keeping a third kicker to handle kickoffs since McManus will handle those duties. But a little over a week out from the opener -- Sept. 13 against the Baltimore Ravens -- and the Broncos are still on the hunt for returners. Especially a punt returner.

Devon Still is also available.

That's a good point.

I disagree with that idea, though. CJ is the starter because he's clearly the best back we have. In terms of guys on the bubble, Ball is here because he's a second round pick and Bibbs was released because he's undrafted and they think they can sneak him onto the PS

I love the idea of using Sanders for PR. It's no more of a risk than AZ using Patrick Peterson or the Seahawks using Earl Thomas. I think Sanders returning punts has way more reward than risk.

I almost started a thread. I will miss him getting burned in the red zone, his face guarding penalties, getting shucked by larger WRs as if he were a rag doll. It's the end of an era.
