Ex-NFL quarterback Erik Kramer shot himself Tuesday in an apparent suicide attempt at a Los Angeles area motel, but survived, law enforcement sources and his former wife said.
Los Angeles County sheriff's deputies were called to a motel in Calabasas at around 8 p.m. for a welfare check, sources told NBC News. When deputies arrived they found a man, identified as Kramer, with a gunshot wound that was described as not life-threatening.

Kramer's former wife, Marshawn Kramer, told NBC News Wednesday night that Kramer suffered years of depression that she believes was the result of his time in the NFL.
"I can promise you he is not the same man I married," Marshawn Kramer said in a telephone interview.

I remember him. Wasn't he involved in politics for a while?

That was Scott Mitchell. Played for the Lions, though, after having a good game or two backing up Dan Marino.

But you would be surprised how many times people survive suicide attempts. You don't miss, bu you might flinch when you pll a trigger to a gun that you know is going to kill you. You put it in your mouth, and shoot...goes up and blows half your face and through the front part of your brain, but not enough is removed to kill you instantly..... keeps you alive long enough for people to 'save' your life.

Yes, there was that hockey goalie , I forget his name, they did a 30-30 on him. He went to blow his head off and just blew part of his head off and he lived

Idahoans have a greater success rate with suicide by gun than its outlying states....true story, I dated a chick who counseled suicidal people back in the day.

I never attempted, but I was asking myself if I was capable of going through with it when I was 11, a late start by autistic/Aspie standards. The closest I ever came to trying was probably 1999, when I "reasoned" that I couldn't attempt at that time because I'd already committed to doing Vacation Bible School at my church & so I couldn't let the children down.

In April 2009, I considered jumping head 1st off my 2nd story balcony. It was during the period I which I waited for the system to officially diagnose me with autism/Asperger's so I could start receiving benefit. For someone who was raised to be independent & self-sufficient member of society, the diagnostic protocol was one of the most degrading experiences that I've ever gone through.

I can understand why someone can reach this point & wish there were magic words I can say to talk anyone out of it trying, but I say that the belief that no one would care if you did is a lie. Just because you're blocking such people out, and/or they have a hard time figuring out how to reach you, doesn't mean they don't care. You just need to look past their inability to read your mind so they can figure out the perfect way you want them to respond & simple embrace their intent.

Of course he's depressed. He played for the Bears and the Lions.
