ENGLEWOOD, Colo. -- In need of another offensive tackle, the Broncos signed rookie Charles Sweeton to the roster Sunday.

The team placed rookie offensive tackle Connor Rains on the waived/injured list to make room. Rains injured his foot during Friday's practice.

The 6-foot-5, 291-pound Sweeton had a brief stint with the Chiefs in May, signing with them as a college free agent May 11 before being released May 19.

Sweeton started 45 games in four seasons at Tennessee-Martin. He was a first-team Ohio Valley Conference selection as a senior last year.

He looks like a softy. Like he has a lot of baby fat. Maybe he will harden up

Two days after losing Kyle Williams for the season with a ruptured Achilles, the Broncos signed 26-year-old wideout Corbin Louks.

Louks was previously with the Chiefs, joining them on a reserve-future contract that he signed Dec. 29. He was waived May 5.

The 6-foot, 200-pound receiver had spent two weeks on Kansas City’s practice squad last season and spent time on the Seahawks’ practice squad in 2012.

Louks, a former quarterback, completed nine of 15 passes for 145 yards and two touchdowns while adding 60 carries for 380 yards at Utah. He transferred to Nevada in 2009, switching to safety before switching again to receiver, in 2011.

I wish him the best but he seems like a long shot to make the team.

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. — With three out of four players in the Broncos secondary returning from Pro Bowl seasons, Defensive Coordinator Wade Phillips has a lot of talent to work with, but it's those players' intelligence, savvy and competitive fire that make them great fits for what Phillips wants to do.

Phillips' intention to unleash the defense's natural aggression is widely known following his initial press conference in February, but exactly how he's going to do it is an unknown, especially because he has the options to do it in many ways.

"We play a lot of man in places where we have man corners," Phillips said. "We're going to be a pressure defense. Now if it's pressure out of the zone and zone blitzes or pressure out of man and man blitzes, that's what you try to decide. Now it looks like we can have a combination."

What separates them from other teams in their ability to utilize a combination, Phillips says, is the players' intellect.

If the defense can stay reasonably healthy they should be very good.

I don't know what to think of this Sweeton kid other than he is undersized for an offensive lineman.

Jordan Taylor runs down the sideline, long strides creating slight separation from the defender. The ball arcs into his hands as the largest crowd of training camp (4,787) erupts into cheers.

This is the intriguing twist of two-a-days, a reason for diehard fans to soak up 90-degree sun: The mystery player.

An undrafted college free agent has made the Broncos' 53-man roster in 11 consecutive seasons. Taylor represents a candidate to turn it into a dozen. The receiver continues to catch passes thrown his way, standing out as much as anyone can after five days of practice.

One day means nothing. Two days serve as a hint. Three days offer a glimpse at the direction Broncos coaches' might be headed.

Four days?

Four days of a player getting repetitions with the first unit is a good indication the job might be his to lose.

Ryan Harris has played right tackle in situational drills for the majority of training camp, and Chris Clark has spent most of his time with the second unit.

KUSA—There's been buzz about Von Miller and DeMarcus Ware providing the Denver Broncos with the best pass-rushing tandem in the league. And rookie Shane Ray could make it a trio.

Some scouting websites have proclaimed Chris Harris Jr. and Aqib Talib as the NFL's best cornerback duo. And second-year corner Bradley Roby could make it a trio.

No one except Wade Phillips has said anything about how the two inside linebacker positions in the 3-4 defense are a team strength. To the contrary, there's been concern about the positions because of the injuries to Danny Trevathan (left knee) and Brandon Marshall (right foot).

Maybe there shouldn't be.

As long as Wade isn't just blowing smoke, that's a really good sign for the defense. Jackson's nagging calf injury is not, though. He'll probably be fine by the time it counts, though.

I know Steven Johnson has been serviceable the other guys have had some playing time but not enough to really say how they will do. I do think Denver has good linebacker corps but only time tell if that is the case.
