Katrina Smith, mother of Demaryius Thomas, has prison sentence commuted

Katrina Smith, the mother of Denver Broncos wide receiver Demaryius Thomas, was one of 46 people whose sentences were commuted by President Barack Obama on Monday. The 46 sentences are the largest number of sentences commuted by a president since the 1960s.

Smith and Thomas’ grandmother, Minnie Thomas, were arrested in 1999 for narcotics trafficking, and have been in prison since Demaryius Thomas was 11 years old. Smith was scheduled to be released in 2017, while Minnie Thomas received a life sentence.

The White House issued a press release explaining the action, saying that “federal sentencing practices can, in too many instances, lead nonviolent drug offenders to spend decades, if not life, in prison.”

Rand Paul wants sentences like this reduced. No reason for people with these sort of crimes to rot away 15 plus years while eating up tax dollars. After seeing her story and how she didn't rat on her mom I think she really got way more punishment than deserved. DT is going to get paid and at least she will have a good life from here on out.

In 2010 the "total cost of Colorado’s prisons—to incarcerate an average daily population of 19,958—was $606.2 million" or $30,000 per inmate per year, and for long-term inmates its a lot more (those figures include short-term county jail detainees which is a lot cheaper).

Probably double that for long-term offenders.

Personally, I'd rather my tax dollars went to something more useful, or perhaps they release the non-violent drug offenders and issue a tax refund! I could use the extra money about now. :sad:
