ASCOT, England -- Undrafted, owned by NFL player Wes Welker, won the Diamond Jubilee Stakes at Royal Ascot on Saturday, the final day of the meet.

Welker, a former wide receiver for the Denver Broncos who is a free agent, named the horse after his status in the 2004 draft when he was not selected.

Welker expressed his excitement via Twitter:

@WesWelker

I can't believe I didn't make the trip over! Can't believe we won! @gatewoodbell and Wesley Ward #bestinthebiz

The 14-1 shot, ridden by Frankie Dettori, also gave American trainer Wesley Ward his first Group One success in England after previously winning only juvenile events at Ascot.

If i had known it was running i would have backed it.

Good on him, that is the second time he has brought it to the UK - last time was also for a high profile race.

Sorry for hijacking the thread here. I'm going to get shot down for this too. But I'm hoping Welker can rejoin the Broncos. I like him for depth and in the slot.

Go ahead and tell me how he's done now and only want him if he pays the Broncos to play...

No one has to tell you, the market is already saying it.

I am with you, been saying it all off season.

Vet minimum - great fit for the locker room, handy to have on a 3rd down.

This all sounds nice, but if he were really still useful enough to be handy on 3rd downs, someone would have already brought him in for a look at the vet minimum. Maybe he gets a chance when people start getting hurt in camp but at this point I think the market has spoken loudly and clearly on him. He just doesn't have it anymore.

Or, alternatively, nobody wants to be the club to have him in their employ when his head pops.

I would agree that the concussion risk is a part of it. I do think if a team thought he could still contribute, though, they would take that chance. Denver knew his concussion history when they signed him two years ago. Back then, he was still thought of as elite. Now that he has such concussion issues plus the fact that he clearly slowed down last season, I just don't see any team finding it worth it to sign him.

Dude had a great career and should go to the hall of fame, but I think it's the end of the road for him.
