The Broncos' shuffled, and reshuffled, offensive line had lost its latest center, Will Montgomery, in free agency, and the NFL draft offered few viable replacement options.
"It became a concern," said coach Gary Kubiak, who spoke with general manager John Elway at length about the position. "Which direction are we heading here? I just mentioned to John, 'There's a guy — you all go look at him, but I had him up at Baltimore and he had started the year before, and I think he's a great player and take a look.' "
