According to the Broncos special teams coordinator Joe DeCamillas, so far so good for UDFA punter Karl Schmitz. Could he unseat Britton Colquitt, who has been a disappointment in recent years?
One of the most uncelebrated free agent moves in the month of March was when the Denver Broncos signed punter/kicker Karl Schmitz—an UDFA out of Jacksonville University (2008). We here at Mile High Huddle believe that John Elway signed Schmitz, hoping against hope, that he could unseat veteran punter Britton Colquitt.
As the tenth-highest paid Broncos player (think about that), cutting Colquitt after June 1st would save the team $3M on the salary cap. Colquitt was a revelation in 2011, during the “Tebow season”, in which field position became one of the most important keys to each game.
Colquitt’s leg often helped set the stage for some of Tebow’s miraculous comebacks. Colquitt’s 2012 was solid but unspectacular and it was in August of 2013 that Elway made him the highest paid punter in the NFL, extending him on a three-year, $11.67M contract.
Are You Hoping Schmitz Unseats Colquitt? SOUND OFF IN THE FORUMS!
Since then, Colquitt has steadily declined. In 2014, he ranked No. 27 in the NFL in net yards per punt, with a paltry 37.6. He only managed 25 punts inside the opponent’s 20-yard line, ranking him No. 17, although it should be noted that he only punted 69 times, which was tied for 14th fewest in the league.
As one of the team’s highest-paid players and one of the league’s highest at the position, those numbers are unacceptable—Elway knows this.
