In the third round, the Broncos decided to take a player from the Ohio State Buckeyes, the defending national champions.
Jeff Heuerman comes to the Broncos, joining the tight end ranks that already include Owen Daniels, Virgil Green and James Casey.
The Broncos were expected to take a tight end that they could groom in their system, and Heuerman has the tools to become a long-term starter at some point in his career. It doesn't hurt that he'll get some time with Peyton Manning either.
Heuerman's stats won't jump off the page—he caught just 52 passes in his college career—but he does the things that don't get noticed very well, particularly blocking.
Heuerman didn't take up football until high school and has turned into a solid tight end. Denver clearly felt the upside was too good to pass up.
The Broncos are filling needs as the draft goes after making the move for Ray in the first round. They are set up well to make this a very successful draft.
Grade: B+
College Stats:
Receptions: 52
Yards: 792
Touchdowns: 7
Scouting Combine Stats:
Bench Press Reps (225 lbs): 26
Heuerman has some upside. After going through 2 foot surgeries and 3 different starting QB's his senior season, he'll find some stability with the Denver Broncos and new coach Gary Kubiak. Elway likes his leadership, toughness and work ethic. He'll have some time to learn the system behind Owen Daniels, Virgil Green and James Casey while he contributes on special teams.
