View Full Version : Gary Zimmerman: Zone blocking will keep defenses off-balance, could extend Manning's career

Twenty years ago, when the offense underwent a schematic overhaul as part of a coaching change, the final pieces of what would create a Hall-of-Fame resume for offensive tackle Gary Zimmerman fell into place.

He didn't realize it at the time, but an offense built around zone blocking would help him add two Pro Bowls, another first-team All-Pro selection and, finally, a Super Bowl ring to one of the finest ledgers any offensive lineman ever assembled.

Zimmerman retired after Super Bowl XXXII, going out on top the way that John Elway would a year later, and the way that Peyton Manning would like to leave, whenever the record-breaking quarterback ends his career.

Shelley Smith and Gino Hochstein are more likely to end Manning's career than extend it.

What does that scrub Zimmerman know? We have far more knowledgeable people here on Broncosforums.

Just like with Joel endlessly trotting out Schlereth's "fire them all" rant, Zimmerman's comments don't and shouldn't end debate about whether or not Denver is taking the right path.

The key words in that article are "Hall of Fame. . . Gary Zimmerman." Now, is anybody on the Broncos OL roster in 2015 going to be considered, forget voted in, just ever considered for the Hall of Fame? No. :coffee:

Hence the difference. It doesn't matter what system you run. This is a player's league. You need TALENT to win it. Good coaching helps of course. The Broncos have under-achieved the last 3 years because of crap coaching from Fox & Co. The Broncos had an OL with real talent in the 90's. They don't now.

But, it's impossible to argue that this OL is stuffed with real talent when they are stocked with career backups like Chris Clark and Manny Ramirez who are given starting jobs, and after losing a starter in Orlando Franklin, they add a few marginal cast-offs as backups.

I don't remember calling Zimmerman a scrub, ever, same with the rest of the SB lineman.
