PHOENIX — To begin his first AFC coaches breakfast while representing the Broncos, Gary Kubiak began by wishing Peyton Manning a happy birthday.

All good coaches understand the value of a happy quarterback.

"I'm looking forward to it, about two weeks out from getting started," Kubiak said. "I'm looking forward to getting him in the building and talking football on a full-time basis. So, happy birthday to him and can't wait to see him in a couple weeks."

* Bradley Roby. After his fine rookie season as the Broncos' No. 3 cornerback, the team has iscussed giving him some time at safety this season.

"That has come up," Kubiak said. "Here's how it comes up: We're going to get our best players on the field. Percentage-wise last year he did not play a whole lot. He played in nickel and those type of things. I think if you look at our division, we're probably going to play a lot more nickel than we play base defense. But when we do play base defense ... you don't want him standing there on the sidelines. He's a fine player, so the talk is getting him some safety work. He's a physical player. Basically, it's us saying he needs to be out there."

Some posters suggested this, but that context clarifies things and makes more sense.

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. – Denver Broncos coach Gary Kubiak said Tuesday at the NFL’s annual spring meetings the team’s offense is ready for installation and that quarterback Peyton Manning is healthy and will be easily fit what the new playbook has to offer.

Kubiak made his comments to the media assembled at the AFC coaches’ breakfast at the Arizona Biltmore resort in Phoenix.

And has he has done since he was hired in January, Kubiak reiterated Tuesday his belief that Manning would be comfortable and successful no matter how he is aligned on plays – under center, in the shotgun or in the “pistol,’’ away from center but still in front of the running back -- as the team begins a bit of a transition to an offense that, at least at the moment, plans to run the ball a little more.

“We’re going to teach it all from the standpoint of scheme-wise and what you install and how you do those things, we’re going to teach it all,’’ Kubiak said in Phoenix. “He’s been back there for years, but he’s also played extremely well under center, too. I think it will be a combination of things. It’s going to boil down to what he’s most comfortable with and what we feel like we’re doing best.’’

Bradley Roby played less than 60% of the snaps in 3 of DEN's last 8 games. That might change: http://www.denverbroncos.com/news-and-blogs/article-1/Notion-of-using-Bradley-Roby-at-safety-has-come-up/85a17067-768b-4097-9faf-aa78362647c6

The Denver Broncos' offense that broke records in 2013 has since lost Pro Bowl tight end Julius Thomas and slot machine Wes Welker, leaving a prime opportunity for 2014 second-round draft pick Cody Latimer.

New coach Gary Kubiak made it clear Tuesday that the organization is counting on Latimer to ascend to the No. 3 receiver role in 2015.

I think it's time for him to make a big jump," Kubiak said, via The Denver Post. "Not just a little jump. Obviously his play time is fixing to pick up, and it needs to pick up, so we need him to make a big jump in year two."

Latimer was relegated to the scout team as a rookie, learning the playbook so he could gain Peyton Manning's trust.
