DENVER (CBS4) – Crews are almost done removing the sod at Sports Authority Field at Mile High.

The decision to redo the grass on the field the Denver Broncos play on came before the season started, and it’s about more than just the appearance, according to Denver Broncos facilities director Zach Myhra.

“Our focus is what’s below the grass, the 12 or so inches below the field where the roots actually take hold, as well as a warming system, irrigation system and systems of that nature to support what you see on game days,” Myhra said.

It will take until April to get all of the renovations done before the new grass is laid out.

The new sod will be 100 percent Kentucky bluegrass and is being grown by Graff’s Turf Farms in Fort Morgan.

There’s was no consideration to use any sort of artificial turf because the Broncos have always played on a natural surface.

I did a stadium tour in 2010 when I went to a Broncos game. They spent a long time talking about the turf and how state of the art it was. Something about every blade of grass being wrapped so when it gets ripped up the roots didn't come with it

100% Kentucky blue grass = NFLs best playing field.

DENVER - The Denver Broncos will be playing on real grass, instead of a synthetic-grass blend, next season at Sports Authority Field at Mile High.

Team officials said workers began removing the field surface on Monday and plan to have the new grass field in place in early April.

The surface has been a synthetic-grass blend put in place when the stadium opened in 2001. The new surface will be 100 percent Kentucky bluegrass sod. Officials said the sod will be grown by Graff’s Turf Farms in Fort Morgan.

This surprised me, as I thought it was always just real grass. All I know is that the field looked terrible last year.

Why is that better than any other grass species?

I also always wondered why it is called bluegrass because the blades are 100 percent green.

This is Colorado what they need is a hybrid, a cross, ah, between Kentucky Bluegrass, Featherbed Bent, and Northern California Sensemilia. The amazing stuff about this is, that you can play 36 holes on it in the afternoon, take it home and just get stoned to the bejeezus-belt that night on this stuff.
