I like Fox, I really do, but I think Elway saw what the rest of us did... two uninspired performances in two of the most important games. I think the Broncos need a culture change. I see teams like the Seahawks flying around and hi-fiving each other and having fun on the field and the Broncos look like they're holding a business meeting. They need someone to get them to want to be there.

Yeah, but that's hard for me to imagine. So is Manning bailing if Gase isn't around; that would only help his game, IMHO, and he probably knows it.

This is still a year, if not two, too late to save Mannings career though; I just can't see the whole team getting in synch with any new coach by this time next year, nor Manning starting and playing well at 40.

Pretty much where I'm at. I liked Fox but eventually things have to change if we can't get over the hump. This might be the first of many cleaning house type moves for this team and starting over next year.

Seems like a lot of teams want Fox now that he's available. I say good luck to him and them. He'll probably be good somewhere else, but I think fans of other teams are overrating him because of his record, when much of that was due to the Manning factor.

I thought Fox was good not great for a while, but this season I tried to be optimistic and defend him. There were PLENTY of instances in which he was not conservative, to his credit.

Anyway, I think he did a great job making adjustments in the Tebow year, as well as this year changing from a pass-first team to a running team. His legacy as Broncos head coach was always going to depend on Peyton Manning, and it's almost unfortunate for him. But ultimately, the team needs a coach that can take this team to its next level. Fox wasn't able to do it, but he's built a solid foundation that really only needs a few key players and a younger more energetic coach to continue the successes we've seen the past few years.

In the end, Fox's legacy here will be seen as a failure. The team wasn't ready to play in big games against the Ravens, against the Seahawks, and against the Colts, three teams that we were favored against. But I am still grateful that he came in and stabilized the franchise after years of mediocrity thanks to Jay Cutler and Josh McDaniels. Expectations were not met, but it has been a fun 4 years. So thanks Foxy.

See im not sure how I feel about him as a HC. I like that he knows the players and he seems to have leadership that fox does not, but his playcalling and lack of feel for the game has me super worried. I read a thing from an interview with him where he said (the rams game) he had no idea that he had only called 9 run plays the entire game until he looked at the sheets AFTER the game. Thats terrible! beyond terrible!

Broncos general manager John Elway and coach John Fox held a meeting Monday. Afterwards, the two mutually agreed to part ways, according to a team source.

Fox and Elway shared an embrace. Elway now goes about trying to find a new head coach. Fox moves on and could wind up coaching for another NFL team next season.

Fox had been the Broncos' head coach the past four years, posting a 46-18 record that included going four of four in winning AFC West Division titles. However, Fox had not led the Broncos to a Super Bowl victory, as was the team's expectation since it signed quarterback Peyton Manning three years ago.

AND

The Broncos had not considered dismissing Fox, but became concerned by a Fox Sports report Sunday morning, a few hours before Denver's game against Indianapolis.

The report by Jay Glazer, a close friend of Fox, said that should the Broncos lose to the Colts, "could John Fox become available? If he is, he'll shoot to the top of many of these (head coaching candidates) list."

The Broncos became concerned that Fox might have been unhappy and was keeping his options open to coach elsewhere.

I don't have any numbers with me, but isn't it extremely rare for a team that parts ways with their HC to hire one of their own coordinators as HC? I almost never see it happen, and there's a good reason for that.

Considering Elway fired both coordinators, I would say it's safe to assume neither will be re-hired for the HC position.

I'm not saying Elway bases his decision on Manning. But I do think Manning will base his decision on Gase's future. I don't think he wants to start over with a new HC and OC at 39 years old. And Dave Logan said on the radio this morning that Manning cited coach movement as one of the factors he will weigh during their postgame interview last night.

Of course, I guess "coach movement" could mean moving Fox et al out. ..

Could it be Elway will ask Manning to retire! Manning recent leg/quad injury's is similar to Elways hamstring injury during the 98 season which John missed 4 games of 14-2 Superbowl win undoubtedly played a decision with Elway retiring a couple months later in 1999. Back then Elway made an agreement that his father would tell him to retire when he just didn't have it anymore. Could it be they're could be the agreement between Manning and his father as well? See im not sure how I feel about him as a HC. I like that he knows the players and he seems to have leadership that fox does not, but his playcalling and lack of feel for the game has me super worried. I read a thing from an interview with him where he said (the rams game) he had no idea that he had only called 9 run plays the entire game until he looked at the sheets AFTER the game. Thats terrible! beyond terrible!

Right there with ya buddy. On all accounts. I think we get a new HC, OC and DC and studes will stay. Im still trying to decide who I like for our new Coaches.

Gase is a milquetoast and follower. Not a leader.

I don't get the love for John Gruden as a coach. What did he do really? He won 1 SB in his first year. Then what did the Bucs do? He is a good not great coach who would only be a minor improvement over FOx.
Maybe a good OC; he built Oaklands last great teams, despite the Davis family hamstringing all their OTHER coaches and turning that club into a multi-decade dumpster fire. That said, yeah, he won A SB with an elite D Dungy built for him, versus an offense HE built. After the NFCCG he could've just dropped his old playbook off with his assistants and left for vacation two weeks early.

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. — The Broncos and Head Coach John Fox have mutually agreed to part ways, the team announced Monday.

Fox, the 14th head coach in Broncos franchise history, and the team parted ways after a loss in the Broncos' opening playoff game on Sunday. He finished his tenure in Denver with four consecutive division titles on a 46-18 regular-season record with a 49-22 overall record with the Broncos.

STATEMENT FROM JOHN ELWAY

“John Fox and I met for more than an hour on Monday afternoon to discuss the 2014 season and our goals for the future. During our open and candid conversation, it became clear that it was best for both the Denver Broncos and Coach Fox to move on and make this change.

“On behalf of the Broncos, I sincerely thank John for his many contributions during his four seasons as head coach. He helped establish a positive, winning culture for this team and deserves a lot of credit for the Broncos’ turnaround.

“While we have made significant progress under Coach Fox, there is still work to be done. I believe this change at the head coaching position will be in the best interest of our long-term goal, which from day one has been to win World Championships.

“Our organization is fully dedicated to reaching Pat Bowlen’s high standards for his team as we begin the process of finding the next head coach to lead the Denver Broncos.”

STATEMENT FROM JOHN FOX

“I had a productive visit with John Elway this afternoon in which we were both very honest about our time together and how to best move forward. After this discussion, John and I mutually agreed that the timing was right for this decision.

“Although we came up short of our ultimate goal, I am proud of our team’s many accomplishments during these last four years. I truly appreciate all of the hard work put in by every player, coach and staff member within this organization.

“It was an honor to coach the Denver Broncos, a first-class franchise with great fans and a winning tradition. I am thankful to John, Mr. Bowlen and Joe Ellis for allowing me and my family to be part of this team and community.

“I am eager to continue my coaching career and look forward to the opportunities that lie ahead.”

Seriously, though, I want somebody fresh. We tried to the "proven" head coach with Fox and it was four good years, but not enough. Get someone new and fresh. Go big or go home.

Pretty much.

We as a organization are now stablized, time to bring in some fresh blood with a coach who is equally as hungry as the players.

Well i doubt that the playcalling was all Fox so without any creativity or adjustments i dont see much changing in terms of coaching. I would like to have Manning back (if the injury was truly what made him go in a slump) but i would rather have a different coach at the helm.

Kubrick didn't even win a damn playoff game. I don't care who his quarterback was.

No thanks.
Tell King Kubiak never won a playoff game: Houston spanked Cincy in playoff games back-to-back seasons; the first was the game when J.J. Watt suddenly turned into... J.J. Watt. Again, who has trouble with facts? Unless you mean Kubiak never won a playoff game as a PLAYER, but he was understudy to JFE, and we're talking about him taking Foxs job, not Mannings.

Seriously. I don't get this enamormet with Kubes at all. Have people totally forgotten his stint in houston?
Apparently some folks have: Forgot him turning a moribund team into an offensive power, forgot turning an UDFA into NFL Rushing Champ, forgot him bringing the franchise its first EVER winning season, division title and playoff wins (note the plural; just as 3>0 last time someone fact checked me without checking THEIR facts, 2>0 now.) Again, Schaubs failures aren't Kubiaks.

Wait, I thought Rick Dennison turned Houston offense into a juggernaut?
That's a fair point, or at least a good question: Kubiak's had Dennison on his staff on ALL THREE teams where he coached, so how much of the offensive power ALL THREE had is Kubes and how much Dennison? Hard to say, but it's a question I liked asking about Denver and Houston a LOT more than I like asking it about Baltimore. Main difference is I'm pretty sure a former LB and STs coach like Dennison can do more than JUST run an offense if he wants to be a HC someday. I'd cheerfully promote Kubes to our HC and Dennison to OC; worked GREAT for Houston, however badly remembered.

Oh, and btw, Josh McDaniels can't touch Kubes as a HC or a coordinator, comparing the 2 at this point is laughable. One guy has earned it, the other guy dresses like he's earned it.

Got you on two:

1) Manning wasn't the first nor even SECOND HoF QB to hit the FA market (because Favre signed with Minnesota and Moon with Seatle as FAs, and there are probably others.) 3>0
2) Kubiak didn't "never win a playoff game," he beat Cincy in the playoffs two years straight. 2>0

No, it's not his fault Schaub failed in Houston anymore than it's his fault Schaub failed in Atlanta and got traded to Houston. It's Schaubs fault Schaub failed, and that he took Kubes down with him.

Sorry I confused you with the person who made the "facts" comment when responding to you; guess everyone got someone here.

That's only a valid comparison if one thinks David Carr, Sage Rosenfels and Matt Schaub comparable to Peyton Manning. Safe bet no one does. I guess there's kind of a comparison between Fox and Kubiak though: Kubiak won as many playoff games with the 2-14 team he inherited as Fox won with the 4-12 team he inherited. But, again: Carr/Schaub=/=Manning

No, it's fair and comparable because the discussion is Fox BEFORE he came to Denver, not after he got here. And it's plenty comparable to Delhomme, Clausen and whatever crappy quarterback Fox ran out there in Carolina.

Lombardi thinks the departure was coming before the loss to the Colts.

That very well might be true, and it could have been Fox who wanted out. First, keep the following in mind:

Fox, meanwhile, would have preferred a little more authority with the draft and roster.

The Broncos became concerned that Fox was unhappy and was keeping his options open to coach elsewhere. According to a team source, the report "opened the door" to the meeting Monday between Elway and Fox.

http://www.denverpost.com/broncos/ci_27306021/broncos-john-fox-john-elway-expected-meet-monday

After each Broncos' game, different stations on tv have sports people on to discuss the game. On ch9 last night, Ron Zappolo was one of the people on. In regards to what Jay Glazer said before the game yesterday, Ron said that each time a HC was unhappy and wanted out, or had a feeling they would be fired, they would contact Ron and tell him to get it out, so his name would be out there for other coaching openings.

Then, there is this, reported by Jay Glazer today: From article:

Fox informed FOX Sports NFL insider Jay Glazer first of the news on Monday afternoon.

I've heard fox hated the gameplan for the colts game. He also as you say, may have wanted out before then......that begs the question why would he want out so badly? Maybe because, especially if he didn't like the game plan, that gase is as much of a problem as I have said, or maybe even worse.

What could possibly be any other reason for his wanted departure especially after he had expressly disagreed with the game plan?

I think you're trying to fit a square peg into a round hole with that theory... As Carol alluded to, Fox reportedly would have liked more say over the roster and draft. Between an all-time great GM and QB, he probably got tired of dealing with egos and wanted more power with all of his experience.

The Gase theory doesn't add up because he (Fox) had control over the game plan. It makes sense if he was frustrated with things that were out of his control, but the game plan was one of the few things he did control.

I'd really like to know. I wonder how much Elway has say in this? IMO, and I could be way off, elway shouldn't really have any say in who is up or down on game day, or plays or anything else...not saying he does either
