Now that emo as a genre of music has been dead for over 5 years, I think it is a good time to look back to some of the greatest albums of my favorite music genre. Sadly, most of the bands below are no longer active.

But before you reply: "Emo sux LOL" or "Go cut yourself!", give it a listen because you probably have absolutely no idea what emo is.

Number 10:
The Appleseed Cast - Low Level Owl: Volume 1 (2001)
The Appleseed Cast combine raw emotion with technical playing, listening to them almost puts you in a trance, but seeing them in concert makes the hairs on your neck stand up for hours.

Suggested Listening:

Number 9:

The Juliana Theory - Understand This is a Dream (1999)
Former Zao guitarist left to be the front man of The Juliana Theory. This is their first album, they came out with 4 or 5 more but this is my favorite. This CD has lots of catchy hooks and awesome lyrics.

Number 8:

Alkaline Trio - Maybe I'll Catch Fire (2000)
While Alkaline Trio may not be an emo band, they certainly made some effing awesome emo albums (their first 3). Dan Andriano really shines in this album.

Number 7:

Sunny Day Real Estate - Diary (1994)
This album pretty much created the modern emo genre, I have never heard anyone speak ill of it...The lead singer is considered a demigod among emo fanciers.

Number 6:

Jimmy Eat World - Clarity (1999)
Just an absolutely beautiful album with lots of subtle hooks and excellent drumming. A complete album of close to an hour long, with no crappy filler songs.

Number 5:

The Early November - The Room's Too Cold (2003)
The Crowning achievement of the last of the great emo bands. The dynamic contrast in this album lulls you to sleep and then startles you with sudden intensity.

Suggested Listening:

Number 4:

Mineral - The Power of Failing (1995)
I tried to keep this one off the list because there is another Mineral album further down the list, but I couldn't. This album is so ground breaking that it is absolutely hard to believe that it is their first album and that it was made 15 year ago!

Number 3:

The Promise Ring - Nothing Feels Good (1997)
The finest band Milwaukee (or Wisconsin) ever produced. They have so many apparent flaws (lead singer not the greatest of voices) that somehow only adds to their appeal.

Suggested Listening:

Number 2:

Further Seems Forever - The Moon Is Down (1999)
Before singer Chris Caraba became wildly successful (and helped to spell the doom of emo as a music genre) with his solo project Dashboard Confessional, he recorded this album. It is personally my favorite album of all time, it brings up so many different feeling and memories in my life.

Number 1:

Mineral - EndSerenading (1998)
Absolutely the best emo album ever, I cannot describe how well this album is able to make one feels so many different emotions at once while listening...guaranteed to bring one to tears with the lyrics in front of one's eyes. This is Mineral's second and last album.

I'm not mad...just disappointed.

Srsly though, I dig some of the music up there. The Early November was good while they were together.

Sneakers is Joy Division considered emo?

That is a very strange band, and a tough call to make, but I would say no because they existed in a different musical era than 90's emo. But call them whatever you want.

Oh hell no! Fugazi is above categorization, unless of course you have a category entitled "good music"

Sneak, you deserve a couple of self high 5's. Treat yourself.

How can you possibly call this the top 10 emo albums of all time with no get up kids?

Four Minute Mile is the embodiment of emo music.

Your no kind of emo at all! I would tell you to go cut your self but I don't think you would now how...

What makes this list so special, is that it is my list....(you can formulate your own)....and I do not particularly enjoy the GUKs, although many of my friends and many people I know do.

I believe his post was sarcastic...but then again you could never tell that from his tone of voice in a written medium such as this message board.

A lot of the bands Sneakers listed are extremely talented.

And sneakers, FWIW -- I don't consider Emo to really be dead. Bright Eyes is still around, C.O. doing his thing. Check out Monsters of Folk.

It was good time.
