When the NFL spotlight discovered C.J. Anderson three weeks ago, he was able to embrace its glow while also softening its intensity.
Running the ball for the Broncos, Anderson said, was no different from playing in Pop Warner. People who remember him from back then noticed the juxtaposition in his muse.
"He was about 8 years old when I first met him," said Bobby Brooks. "When I first saw him, I told him and his mom that he was going to make it."
Eight years old? Brooks had already showed the kids from the dangerous Country Club Crest neighborhood of Vallejo, Calif., there is a way out. He became a linebacker for the Oakland Raiders.
