The NFL is often criticized as the No Fun League for its rules against touchdown celebrations, hard hits and even language.

But league referee John Parry, who worked the Broncos-San Francisco 49ers game Sunday night, deserves credit for not being over officious and recognizing Peyton Manning’s record touchdown pass deserved a little extra time to honor.

During the pregame officiating meeting with representatives from both teams, officials and members from the national radio and TV broadcast crew, Parry stated there would be a delay before the extra point should Manning throw his third touchdown pass of the night, which would give him a record 509 in his career.

The delay wasn’t long before Brandon McManus booted his extra point. But it was long enough to where another referee might have flagged the Broncos for delay of the game

And that same referee would have had plenty of time to lament that decision in physical rehab.
