Rookie Crowder in rush to get QB

Simon Fletcher doesn't have to sweat yet, but Broncos rookie Tim Crowder is working on a sack streak of three games. Fletcher, the Broncos' all-time sack leader, holds the NFL sack streak record with 10 games.

What makes Crowder's streak noteworthy is the rookie was supposed to be more of a balanced defensive end, not necessarily a premier pass rusher, when he was drafted in the second round in April.

"That's always what they've said about me," Crowder said. "I told everybody I could do both."

Jarvis Moss, who was selected by the Broncos in the first round, was supposed to be the pass-rushing specialist. Moss had one sack in six games before suffering a season-ending ankle and lower leg injuries.

Is Crowder getting free in part because opposing offenses are doubling up on Elvis Dumervil, who has posted a team-high 16 1/2 sacks the past two seasons?

"I don't think so because we trick it up out there," Crowder said. "We switch up on the move to make sure they don't do that."

Crowder has one other sack this season, giving him four overall, and a touchdown return on a fumble that Dumervil forced while sacking Ben Roethlisberger. After Dumervil's eight sacks and Crowder's four, the only other Bronco with multiple sacks is defensive tackle Alvin McKinley, who has two.

Dumervil said he hopes more quarterbacks will get dumped as he and Crowder to work off each other.

"Generally I get double-teamed in the beginning of the game but as we get into the flow of the game, Tim takes on a lot of double teams, too," Dumervil said.

Crowder has the tools to be very good. I remember Mel Kiper saying at last year's draft that Crowder would have been a number one pick if had been more consistant.

Lots of reasons to be up for this team, despite their record. They're building a pretty good nucleus here.

John Lynch said that the team is very excited about Crowder and what he can do.

I am real excited about this DL for next year especially if we can get a decent Biggie DT or two in the offseason.....

This will be a great DL for perhaps a decade or longer with prudent drafting every other year or so.

If they are great then everyone else on the defense will be just that much better..

We've already got the secondary to do the job in Bly, Bailey, Lynch (until he retires), and Abdullah. If we can beef up our linebackers a tad and snatch up a solid DT to play next to Thomas, I'd venture to say that we'd have a top 10 defense. Crowder and Elvis are a good duo thus far. To be honest, McKinnley seems to be holding his own. Maybe we're ok. Maybe we can get another able body to rotate in. Who knows. The future looks bright for our D-line though.

If our run defense can be top 15, without weakening our pass defense, then I'll be pretty happy with that. If our defense can somehow become elite, that would be great, but Denver's never been known for great defense in a really long time. I'll settle for consistent defense with high powered offense.

And maybe Jrwiz is right, just 1 DT can make a huge difference; the Titans with a healthy Haynesworth is one of the best run defenses in the league; without him, they become pretty ordinary against the run.

Great points; don't forget, Moss was doing pretty good before his injury, so we can look forward to that too.

According to the other article you just posted about Cutler, Denver's run defense is ranked #8 since the bye. I'm happy with that. They've been playing well.

That's pretty darn good; I hope they can keep it up. But come offseason, they really need to fix what needs fixing. With our current gambling defense, there's always one big play for the opposing team's offense waiting to happen.

Daunte and JaMarcus have real good deep throws. I hope Denver gives them the short stuff, but not the big plays. Make them work for it.

Russell is going to find out in a hurry there is more to quarterbacking than just chucking the ball down the field.

As noted by our numbers with a nobody OLINE and nobody RB's.

Put him on this DL in between Thomas, Moss, Dumervil, Crowder sprinkle in Ecuban, #60 and a couple others and this team could really dominate on D. Not top 15 but top 2-3..

which notable RB's have we seen since then? And had we not been up in score in a couple of them I suspect we would have seen alot more running against us.

Logic dictates your statement as the most probable outcome; I'm just not comfortable against an unknown factor. :D I hope you're right.

Top 2-3? Well, I guess if it can happen to the Titans, then why not?

I'd be ecstatic with that, but really I'll settle for a top 15 run defense without cheating on the line. :D

One difference with last season; our pass rush has become much more effective. Ah, to think that most of us thought that if we got that fixed, our defensive problems would be fixed. :D

No kidding, if Russell starts there is no pro game film of him to go on.

I feel the same way. It feels like that black cloud that has been over this team for a year now it starting to break up. Plus from the articles I'm reading it feels like the players are becoming a team.
