View Full Version : Montee Ball's top Broncos backup might be playing elsewhere right now

To win the right to back up running back Montee Ball, the fiercest competition for Ronnie Hillman and C.J. Anderson might not be Brennan Clay, Kapri Bibbs or the pool of undrafted rookies.

It might be the waiver wire.

There are no veteran running backs walking the streets who interest the Broncos. Cut day across the league is coming in late August, though, followed by a more significant roster trim a few days later.

Most likely, some recognizable tailbacks will be on the waiver wire, ready to run for NFL minimum wage.

I believe CJ will eliminate that need.

I thought he looked good between the tackles last year, but media reports keep saying he's too small, which doesn't make sense to me. He's listed at 5'9" 220. That's how big Doug Martin is, if he really is that big.

I believe it. CJ is short...but he is stout. Plus...he's a damn good blocker with a low center of gravity.

Yeah, I thought he and Ball looked the best between the tackles last year.

It's not about running ability, but rather who is the best pass blocker.

Have heard hillman is looking good. More comfortable and running based. He may make it as 3rd RB, more change of pace type.

Hillman also supposedly looked good returning kicks the other day which to me would be a good fit if not for ball security issue

Unless Hillman screws up badly he'll make the team.

I think Hillman is much better than people give him credit for around here. Other than his fumbles (which, are atrocious)....he's looked good when having the ball. His speed was visably significant over the other RBs on the field.

When did CJ show anything? Where does this hype come from?

Fair...but I guess the same could be said for Hillman and anyone else sitting behind Ball.

I base my like for CJ on what he did in college, what he showed in camp and pre-season last year and the specific skills he would bring to the position. Very tough runner between the tackles, good receiver and very good blocker with low center of gravity.

I'm not saying CJ sucks, but I don't see where all this confidence in him comes from. I don't really watch pre season and obviously I can't go to watch training camp.

I think Denver is going to have to run the ball more this year. Teams are going to use Seattle's gameplan against them.

I am with you coach - never seen much of him in college but loved what i seen last year

I think CJ is going to be a stud. As long as he can stay healthy I believe he will get a lot of work.

While his college tape is great, my greatest sense of him being able to play here comes from his game against the niners in last years preseason. Im not saying it simply because he had a good game and great production, it was what I saw.

The guy reminds me of TD. Hes not killer in any one area but seems to display very good ability in every area.

Hes decisive with his feet. He plays low. Hes got great acceleration. Hes a one cut. He can turn the corner. He can catch. He can block.

This guy will be very good imo.

I still wouldn't be surprised if the Broncos signed a vet that gets cut in the next few weeks. I'm not sold on anyone not named Montee Ball at this point.

Oh God no, but there were rumors of him being on trading block, plus they just extended Jackson for another season and have traded for Bryce Brown. I'd be willing to trade a conditional pick for the kind of RB that Hillman was supposed to approximate (might be too strong of word).

Ball and Spiller would be dynamic, he's also a candidate for KR.

Mikel Leshoure is rumored to be available but is he that much of an upgrade? Apparently he looks like LenWhale White atm.

I think a healthy spiller would be worth a gamble and a high draft pick.

But then again I thought we should have rolled the dice on cj2k - so what do I know.

But i would leave leshoure alone and run with what we have.

No RB is worth a high draft pick.

I disagree my friend. A guy like Adrian Peterson is always worth a first round pick.

Yea, i know a lot of people like CJ but until he can actually win a spot in the lineup its just a group of nobodies following Ball right now.

C.J Spiller.

I would love Spiller on this team. I can see Denver going to spread look and Manning checking to the draw and Spiller breaking 80 for TD. It would be Madden like.

Biggest stand out for the rookies was Juwan Thompson for me. He's a big dude that will run through guys, and he's fast. This guy needs another look, and would provide a good 1,2 punch with Hillman while Montee Ball continues to recover from surgery.

I would have no problem with a Ball/Thompson backfield. Still early though.

Thompson has assured himself of another look. I liked what I saw from him but I also try and keep he wasn't going up against the Seahawks' starting defense.

Really? Fast?

I couldn't bring myself to watch this one but every scouting report I've seen on Thompson refers to him as a plodding big back with outstanding special teams skills.

Will look forward to seeing him vs the Niners.

I'll admit I felt better after watching Hillman run last night but that's temporary relief. I still don't want to have to see him start.

EVERYONE would prefer CJ over Hillman. No fan can understand why Hillman keeps getting more and more chances when he just underwhelms at every opportunity. I just don't trust him at all - neither holding onto the ball or protecting Peyton in pass-blocking.
