STATELINE, Nev. — Joe Sakic slapped a golf shot right onto the green Wednesday, drawing polite applause from a smattering of fans sitting in the shade near the No. 6 hole during a practice round on the shore of Lake Tahoe. But the bigger cheer came from just a few yards behind him.
"Way to go, dude," said John Elway, part of a high-profile group that also included Denver Broncos coach John Fox. All three will play in this weekend's American Century Championship at the Edgewood Golf Club.
It's rare to find a superstar athlete who has successfully transitioned into a professional front office, but Denver's got two in Elway, with the Broncos, and Sakic, with the Colorado Avalanche. Nearly 20 years ago they were first contemporaries, leading their teams to four combined titles (two each) from 1996-2001. They've found themselves peers again as they have taken charge of their respective franchises.
