STATELINE, Nev. — The Denver Broncos have made contract offers to star wide receiver Demaryius Thomas and tight end Julius Thomas and will continue negotiating with both players after training camp opens July 24, Broncos general manager John Elway said Wednesday.

"Nothing is going to get done before camp, but we'll keep talking to them in camp," Elway told USA TODAY Sports after playing a practice round of golf at the American Century Championship near Lake Tahoe.

Both Thomases are entering the final years of their rookie contracts, Demaryius as a first-round pick from 2010, and Julius as a fourth-rounder in 2011. They combined for 157 catches, 2,218 receiving yards and 26 touchdowns in Denver's record-setting offense last year.

Most likely, Tamme and Dreesen will both be asked to take pay cuts or get cut if we manage to ink Julius. Elway only wants to pay OJ in the $5-$7 million a year range at max, or around what Vernon Davis is making now. Five years, $30 million is around what I think the offer on the table is now. His agent probably won't let him sign it, but if he doesn't sign it he runs the risk of his production dropping should Fox decide to reel in the offense in favor of ball-control style play. The Broncos either will get him this offseason at a discount or next offseason at a discount because it's going to be real tough for him to have a 1000 yard or 10 touchdown season with all of the mouths to feed in our offense.

Demaryius's deal is doable because Welker counts $8 million on the cap this year, but all of that money comes off the cap next year. Plus, cap space comes back off dead money from DRC, Kuper, and others next offseason so there is plenty of space to work with. Marshall's $10 million a year extension is the starting point. Elway knows how valuable DT is to the franchise, so I expect DT to make Fitzgerald/Andre Johnson/Calvin Johnson annual money, or around $10-$15 million annually when negotiations are over. It's going to take some cap navigation to fit a DT extension under this year's cap, but for a player of DT's quality I'm sure Elway can find a way. He'll get his payday, just might not be until next offseason.
