I'm going to see Machinehead later this month.

Well that was an awesome gig.

Faith no more were brilliant, Soundgarden were OK, black Sabbath were average, motorhead were garbage, but the venue and atmosphere was amazing.

It was also the hottest day of the year so far then it rained as we were leaving - just a good day!

I was looking forward to seeing Avenged Sevenfold next Monday at Red Rocks, but now I have to travel for work instead so I'm going to miss it. Kind of bummed.

I will likely see NIN the following week and am marginally excited, but I really don't like NIN's newer stuff very much and am anticipating a set list heavy on new material. At least it's at Red Rocks though - which makes it worth while.

Yes - it really is an amazing place to see a concert. Especially in the summer. It's also cool because the artists are always into the show given the novelty of the venue.

The last two or 3 Soulfly albums were pretty solid. Just didnt care for Cavalera's project at first as it was more nu-metal than anything else but on the last 3 records he has incorporated more of the classic Sepultura sound into his music which i dig.

Ever since him and Igor started doing their CC stuff on the side, the Soulfly material has improved.

That album is very different. I personally love it but it's a concept album telling a story from start to finish so it's a little different. It's also a pretty early example.
I suggest Bitter Drink, Bitter Moon or Good Morning Magpie. Both are absolute a amazing albums IMHO start to finish.

Also, if you ever have the chance to see them live do it. They are a great live band.

Was at Hyde Park again yesterday - it was an amazing day.

Half Moon Run - I had never heard of them, but they were ace and i am now a big fan, just bought their album on iTUnes.
Tom Odell - Words can not explain how bad this was
The National - pure and utter garbage

Neil Young - words can not explain how awesome he was. He played for about 2 hours, every song was a classic, great set list. He played Rocking in the Free World, and when it finished, out of nowhere they just cracked into another round of the chorus - the place was rocking!!

No more gigs planned at the minute, but i just found out Noel Gallagher is releasing a new album next year, so he will be touring and he is my musical idol, so i will defo be going to see him a few times.

I was going to go anyway, but I'm glad you and Weazel gave me the :2thumbs:. It was a pretty fun concert (even with all the old timers there)! I didn't realize I recognized so many of his songs. But the best thing about the concert was you could totally tell Huey loves what he does. They'd play for free as long as they got to entertain a crowd. On top of that, they are extremely professional and take their craft seriously. Overall I had a pretty rockin time.

Last Thursday I went to the band Blackhawk in Deadwood, SD. I've been a fan of these guys for a long time and have missed some other concerts they've had here recently. The opening band is The Outlaws. The joke is that it's really Blackhawk (a country band) playing as their own opening band (southern rock band). Both acts were really good actually and a very good concert overall.

I also want to point out they might have originated the 90's country mullet:

The Garth Brooks concert was pretty entertaining. I'm not a fan of his, nor do I listen to country music. I went with my wife. She doesn't really listen to country much, but likes Garth. We had a club suite which was very nice. Had our own restrooms, bar, and food. Here's a few pics of the suit area. Really nice. It was really nice having your own restroom area. No lines at all. You could go piss whenever you wanted and no waiting.

The concert was of course country but had a rock concert environment. Dude has a lot of energy and plays to the crowd quite a bit, which was really entertaining. His wife, Trish Yearwood, came out halfway through and did about 5 songs which was entertaining, she sounded good. The concert lasted 2 hours and 15 minutes, which was plenty. He played a few new songs but mainly did his old stuff. He did 3 encores and they were really entertaining. I recognized a few songs, but not many. Anyway, it was a good concert with a lot of energy. Didn't know what to expect, but it exceeded my expectations. Here are a few pics. They aren't great quality.

haha, they saved Freebird for the encore and it lasted about 15 minutes. People did go a bit crazy but it was a pretty subdued crowd, Calgary crowds generally are unfortunately.

Garth was pretty solid. He mostly stuck to all his classics. Trisha Yearwood came out and played 4 or 5 songs, which was ok, but I felt like it took time away from Garth. Overall our group had a lot of fun at the concert.

Enslaved/YOB/Ecstatic Vision/Witch Mountain

So Herman (from another forum) generally busts my balls about not doing concert reviews but since it is my birthday and i had a great special time seeing one of my favorite bands in Enslaved (not too mention having the band actually sing you happy birthday while signing merch!). So here is the evening in review:

First up was Portland Oregon's Witch Mountain, a doom metal project fronted by singer Kayla Dixon. Missy and i pretty much agreed she is the best thing about the band overall. Her range between clean vox and rough vox is pretty stellar but the actual music is ok, but not great.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8ko4YwjB2wY

Then came Ecstatic Vision which had a guitarist/vocalist who looked like a younger version of Lemmy. The band played a cross between psychedelic/progressive rock with some stoner/doom influences. To my surprise Missy really liked this band despite some of the lengthier songs and the use of flutes and saxophones.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=amdihpZcDms

YOB......did i mention YOB? My first time seeing them and MY GOD THEY HAVE A MASSIVE SOUND! They totally crushed it, my soul is now split into broken shards after witnessing that. That my friends was a lot of fun to watch. Missy hated it as she does most doom metal.... lmao

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2HdnaDuRwok

Finally Enslaved,

So ******* EPIC. got to witness the band play some older material off of Monumension (Convoys to Nothingness) and Frost (i think it was Loke but cant remember). Obviously played some newer material and ended with ISA.

So when we had gone to get merch earlier in the evening it was said they would be hanging around to sign some stuff so i bought a poster and LP of the new record. Also got a new patch for my jacket. So as we are in line and moving to get shit signed Missy starts blurting out that its my birthday so immediately the two guitarists and keyboardists break out and start singing happy birthday to me. The guys were so immensely cool. Grutle Kjellson was at the end and i wanted Missy to get a picture with me and him so she did. Unfortunately the only pic that came out well was when Grutle had looked away but i got one with the bloke none the less. He somehow had missed the first opportunity to sing happy birthday to me so he started up again and the boys joined in again. Pretty funny being sung happy birthday by the band Enslaved but was so appreciative at how cool and humble they are. Should of got Missy to get a video of the singing but she probably would of screwed the pooch on that too. lol

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PNUJ0l32YQw

All in all a great evening with some great music. One of the best nights ever for me. I will never forget it. My facebook page has a few clips from some of the bands so if you want to check them out you can go there. I cant link them here currently.

I'm not sure what I think of SP's touring lineup. I won't miss Byrne but was ok with Nicole on bass. Not surprised Lee didn't stay on for the tour and doubt he'd be able to play the back catalog - though I'm surprised RATMs drummer is up to that task as well. Schroeder is Schroeder.

I didn't care for Byrne, but I liked Nicole enough. I think as long as Corgan and Schroeder are still there they will be fine. The newer Pumpkins stuff is basically a wall of guitars. No matter what they are always going to miss Jimmy Chamberlain. That guy is a genius on drums, I've never seen a kit like his before or since and he carried most of the shows I saw him in. The one advantage they have to him being gone is that Corgan is less likely to pull out his drum-heavy opuses like Gossamer or United States which can drag on at a concert.

TMZ is saying that he is suing the guy that hit him. I want to know why the hell he is at a Dennys lmao, Dennys is considered the most disgusting place to eat and the only people that go there are drunken Indians after their dive bar closes.

Alright, so here will be my review for what was an awesome show last night overall. A lot of great bands which also included our own Iced's project Condemn the Infected as the opener. Went last night with Crash and Missy had a chance to see some bands i hadnt seen before.

Part 1

Condemn the Infected
https://www.facebook.com/condemntheinfected?fref=ts

So Jeff's band opened up the night playing around 6-7 songs including one of my favorites in "Gravity Well". They also played "Deny Existence", "Pillars of Creation" and others from the debut CD released a few months back. The band sounded great but did lack a little stage presence which i just chalk up to a young band getting their feet wet still. I know through talking with Jeff that the band is looking to separate the bassist from vocal duties or vice versa i cant remember. Either way, they sounded great and did get a good reaction from the fans that were already there.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8wqQjGh9Pvw

The Convalescence
https://www.facebook.com/theconvalescence

Not really sure to make of this band and i dont think Crash could either. First thing that pops into my head is it reminded me of a band that was "manufactured" in terms of presentation. They had the stage presence and energy (albeit very corny and cliche at times) but everything else was a tad confusing for me. The artwork they had on the backdrops indicated a feel for a metalcore/industrial act. But the band wore corpse paint on stage and had a keyboardist which gave off the impression they wanted to be Cradle of Filth. Even more confusing was the overall music which switched from Metalcore to death to black metal/goth to nu metal. I think this band had a real identity issue and dont really know what they want to be in terms of musical direction.

Soreption
https://www.facebook.com/soreption?fref=ts

This was one band i really wanted to see and they didnt disappoint. Hailing out of Sweden Soreption is a 4 piece of technical death brilliance. Certainly one of the new comers to the genre that doesnt get to overly wanky with their technicality like a Rings of Saturn. No, the riffs are more driven and straight forward with the technical flair added in all the right places. Look wise i did not realize it was only a 4 piece so was kind of surprised by how good they were with just one guitarist. I ended up buying "Engineering the Void" on LP and got the band to sign it for me which they did with no problem at all. Very very cool guys and very humble.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=urlNzWSzvFQ

Erimha
https://www.facebook.com/Erimha?fref=ts

Another band i was eager to see as i loved their 2013 opus "Reign Through Immortality". Did not realize that this would be their debut US show so i found it very cool that i was witnessing this first hand. The band had a fantastic stage presence and cohesiveness about them and sounded tight musically. I also enjoyed their presentation of the black/death metal they play as while they wear corpse paint they wear tattered clothing and not the usual spiked arm bands, leather, chains, etc. Their concept and image is unique to them and that was fascinating to watch.

Part 2

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RKk3wC5coN4

Disgorge
https://www.facebook.com/OfficialDisgorge?fref=ts

While i was familiar with the name i had never heard Disgorge but was impressed by what i heard. Their sound is massive live and their singer even more massive as he is built like a brick shit house. Hailing out of San Diego, CA these guys bring brutal death metal and simply ram it down your throat without holding back. As i stated, the death metal is straight forward and doesnt dive into any new territory but they pull it off flawlessly and have a very powerful stage presence so definitely better than some bands i have seen in the same vein.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I1EGBgFfF6I

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pi8v95fwOKQ

Cryptopsy
https://www.facebook.com/CryptopsyMetal?fref=ts

I dont know if Cryptopsy shined anymore than the previous 3 bands for me but were certainly very good. The crowd was really into it and band sounded awesome. Unfortunately Missy was getting tired (she was up early for work and had to work the next day) so we had to bail a little early and according to Crash i missed "Graves of the Fathers" which sucked but overall i was quite happy with the evening.

Realistically it was a Monday night and a good portion of the would be audience are probably school kids. The other portion would be the people who have spent their money and time for the upcoming Maryland Deathfest which begins on Thursday which i will also be attending. Show was fantastic. Manson seems to be back on track and Billy actually seemed to give a shit about the crowd for the first time in a long time and played a bunch of his hits, mostly Mellon Collie and Siamese Dream. Manson had a big church setup on stage and some props but nothing too crazy. Really tight show. After a weird opening act Marilyn Manson played just over an hour and then the Pumpkins did an hour and a half with 1 encore. The rain and the Monday night showtime kept some people away but overall one of the better shows I've seen from either band. Here is the setlist from what I remember and from what I know they played in earlier shows on this tour:

Marilyn Manson
Deep Six
Disposable Teens
mOBSCENE
No Reflection
Third Day of a Seven Day Binge
Sweet Dreams
The Love Song
Rock is Dead
The Dope Show
Angel With the Scabbed Wings
Lunchbox

The Crying Tree of Mercury
Disarm (acoustic)

I am just in from the Florence and the Machine gig in Sheffield.

I have always liked her and her music - but she is amazing live. She did this thing where she ran down the side of the crowd to get to the back, then sang to those not lucky enough to be near the front.

Really really good gig - if you like Florence, and get the opportunity to see her live, it is well worth it.

and sadly, I'm going to watch The Tragically Hip's last concert Saturday night. I won't be at the show as it is in Ontario, but it is basically a National Holiday and will be shown live without interruption on every CBC station, radio, live stream. We are having a bbq at an acreage on a 30' screen and have setup a ton of sound equipment for about 75 people.

Because of the number of different medias it was available on, they don't have a definitive number of viewers but they think at any given time there were about 11-13 million people watching at some point. I know every bar was showing it and there were viewing parties in stadiums, rec centers, etc... We had about 70 people at our place watching it which would definitely no show up on any viewership table. I would say it was probably closer to 16 million people which would equal the highest viewed Canadian telecast of all time, the 2010 Olympic Gold medal hockey game. Some of it was definitely hard to watch and if you didn't have tears in your eyes, you don't have a soul.

The Hip are basically the biggest band in Canada for the last 25+ years (it goes beyond that), and Gord Downie, the lead singer has been diagnosed with terminal brain cancer and has anywhere from 6 months to a year to live. He decided he wanted to do one more tour while being treated, and this show was their last. He had a physician along side the entire time and was visibly not his energetic self, but put on a great show. It's hard to explain how big The Tragically Hip are in Canada, they're really more than just a band, they are part of Canadiana, if that makes any sense.

I did something like this at a Thom Yorke show a couple of months ago. You could purchase up to four tickets but had to pick them up in person and show ID and credit card of purchase. The venue held less that 3000 people, but waiting in line with 3000 people is a pain in the ass. However, I didn't have to scalp and the seats were less than $60.
