It is Feb. 2, 2014, and Adam Gase, ever the clever schemer, is trying to devise a play — one play — that will alter the compass reading of the Super Bowl. He is searching through his game-plan sheet, his memory, his creative mind, and asking his quarterback's advice.

He has found a play before in this stadium in this season — during a September game against the New York Giants. The score was 10-9 in the third quarter. Gase transmitted the play to the miniature earpiece in Peyton Manning's helmet. Manning threw a crossing pattern over the middle to Wes Welker for a touchdown.

With a consummate veteran quarterback and an unverified rookie offensive coordinator, the Broncos go on to win 41-23, go on to produce an earth-shattering offensive regular season and go on to the Super Bowl back at MetLife Stadium near New York City.

But this time, Gase says frankly now, "I don't have that play."
