vile? that's a bit much,
I almost included the Patriot which I saw recently. that was a great flick too

You are quite correct, vile was a stretch too far! Apologies.

Although had you actually picked the patriot then perhaps it would have been apt!

Five seems impossible, but let's just throw these out there:

I'm not a big fan of Dennis Quaid but he does star in some of my favorite movies:

Everybody's All-American (with some old NFL Films clips of the Broncos as an aside)
Frequency
SwitchBack

Similarly, not a huge Tom Hanks fan (I call him "Pig Eyes") but I love some of his movies:

Forrest Gump
That Thing You Do
Apollo 13
Road To Perdition
Saving Private Ryan was a good film but difficult to watch. My dad was in Europe in WWII.

I think Pulp Fiction is great although over the years its lost its luster a bit. But when it first came out i was watching it time and time again.

When it came I out it was era and genre defining. It was a socially important film as well and had a great soundtrack. It even re launched careers.

It was great
on any number of levels but I watched it recently and agree it is not as good as I used to think. But that is down to the amount of times I watched it and had nothing to do with the quality of the film.

Indeed. Several outstanding performances. This movie had something you don't see often in movies anymore - character development. People change their view of the world or of themselves from the beginning of the film to the end. Duvall/Santini doesn't change but his family, each in their own ways, learn first to adapt to life with this overbearing man and then adapt to being without him.

Yeah I feel the same way, which is why I went with the top 5 movies that set the template for movies I like. For example there are movies that came after Die Hard that looked better, had better action, etc. but that movie is timeless to me and had the perfect balance of what makes a good modern action flick. Plus its a personal list so I also tried to make them movies I could watch over and over again.

I liked how Hawg did his list... I have my list of what I would consider objectively great films, then there is the time/place/memories flicks which I like for various reasons. Then there are my top 3 comedies, which are separate from everything else.

Top 5
Pulp Fiction
Goodfellas
Gangs of New York
Braveheart
American Beauty

Movies that I love -
Days of Thunder - I probably watched this movie 100 times with my step dad growing up. Robert Duvall is awesome. "Rubbing is racing"
Top Gun - Grew up on this flick. "Talk to me Goose"
Full Metal Jacket - One of my earliest movie memories is my dad not allowing me to watch Private Pyle shoot himself, don't know what the hell my parents were thinking allowing me to see this at an early age
A Christmas Story - Mandatory holiday viewing
Willy Wonka - Makes me nostalgic for my childhood everytime

Comedies
Dumb & Dumber
Waynes World
The Big Lebowski

Mine are:

1) Snatch (Man's movie, imo)
2) The Fifth Element (pure entertainment with a beat)
3) Gladiator
4) Miracle
5) The Sandlot

I have so many so I listed the ones I can pop in and watch over and over.

None of the Indiana Jones movies were as good as Raiders. Seeing that film in the theater as an 8 year old kid just blew me away. I'm pretty sure I sat there with my mouth hanging open, in awe, for 2 hours. Same kind of feeling as when Mom took me to see Star Wars at the old Century 21 on Colorado Blvd.

Left the theater simply mesmerized. Hawg made a good point in his earlier post. We were just so much more impressionable as kids. Made things different.

I love all the Indiana Jones, so much I named MY dog Indiana (even called him Indi for short). I do have to say that the Last Crusade was my favorite of the bunch. Think of this though... I too loved Raiders of the lost Ark, but if you think about the whole story line, wouldn't the Nazi's have died whether Indiana showed up or not? They were gonig to open the Ark reguardless of whether Indi got involved or not and the outcome would have been the same.

If Jones hadn't been there, the Ark would have continued to fall into the hands of the Nazis, regardless of whether or not 100 of them were dead. The likelihood that they didn't alert Berlin to where they were headed with Hitler's most valuable weapon is slim to nil, so it wouldn't have been left on that island.

Indy's job was to recover the Ark and keep it out of the hands of the Nazis. Had he not been there, that would not have happened and the ending of the movie wouldn't have been possible with the Ark in a CIA warehouse.

I thought about that too. The Nazi's would just be killing themselves over and over and yes, it wouldn't end up in "The Archives".

I am picking up on a theme here. I think you have to be a little bit older to fully appreciate the Indiana Jones movies. They are just so "meh" from my recollection, but I can see how they'd be more impactful when they were first released.

Yeah, same goes for the original Star Wars trio (IV,V,VI). I don't know too many from any generations younger than my own that enjoyed those, and I was considered a baby when they all came out.

I love indi and star wars - but i watched indi this christmas and it was pure shite, i tried to get my oldest to watch star wars IV and she thought it was atrocious, i agreed.

BUT in the 80s, they were still regarded as ace movies - i am only 33 but i still rememeber watching them in awe

I can only speak for myself but Star Wars as a 4 year old kid, at the time the movie came out, blew me away. I'm not talking about being a 4 year old kid in today's age and watching Star Wars. Sure, it looks like shit to them.

Same thing with Raiders as an 8 year old. If you were 8 in 1981, Raiders of the Lost Arc rocked your world.

Did you know that Eddie Murphy is returning to his role as Axel Foley in a new installment of the Beverly Hills Cop movie series? Brett Ratner will direct and Jerry Bruckheimer will produce the film for Paramount Pictures. Moreover, Beverly Hills Cop 4 being shot in Detroit today and it will release in March 2016.

I am glad that Jerry Bruckheimer is back with BHC franchise. I wish Don Simpson is still alive.

I like a lot of movies but most of my favorites go back quite a few years. I don't really care for most of todays movies. Movies were the best back in the 80's and 90's. Probably the most disturbing movie I ever saw was The Human Centipede. It was just wrong.

1. Star Wars
2. Matrix
3. Fast times at Ridgemont High
4. Shawshank Redemption
5. Boys Don't Cry/At Close Range

I'm way late to this party, but I'm amazed some of my favorites haven't even been mentioned. At the same time I love many of those listed, so I don't think my taste is all out of whack.

1. Last of the Mohicans. Just utterly brilliant. I can't believe it's not been mentioned once in this thread.

2. The Hunt for Red October. I'm guessing anyone younger than 35 hasn't seen it. Find it and watch it.

3. Braveheart. Mentioned a few times here.

4. Shawshank Redemtion. Also mentioned several times.

5a. Shakespeare In Love
5b. Open Range. IMO, Robert Duvall, and Kevin Costner's best work.

Favorite Comedies:

1. There's Something about Mary. The first mainstream raunchy comedy.

2. When Harry Met Sally. More a romantic comedy, but a great movie.

3. Ferris Bueller's Day Off. Seriously? No one mentioned this? Bueller? Bueller? :D

4. Airplane!

5. Christmas Vacation.

Yes. The final scene reveal is so at odds with what you'd expect that you just can't hardly process it. Instead of wrapping everything up for you, it sends you even deeper down the rabbit hole.

In a vacuum:

Good Will Hunting
Alien
Gladiator
Being There
Razor's Edge

Because of the circumstances of when I saw the movie:

Star Trek IV - Saw this when I was young and on welfare and rarely went to theater; it was Christmas day or thereabouts, a holiday. Saw it with best friend.
Terminator 2 - Same friend, same circumstances.
True Grit - Saw with dad in theater, I go to cinema maybe once per 5 yrs
Explorers - Movies meant much more then than now.
Tombstone - saw with dad

I have a hard time not putting Fargo, Res Dogs, Donnie Darko, Eternal Sunshine, Akira, and The Descent on a list somewhere. And Fight Club.

Razor's edge with Bill Murray is pretty kick ass. I never saw the original making. great story though
