The T.J. Ward acquisition evokes memories of the Vasquez signing last year. Not the top guy, reasonable contract, more bang for the buck.

This post made me laugh. I thought about how jay cutler used to play safety and how it doesn't stop him from throwing it right to them. Then I pictured jay's downy looking face playing safety. Then of course I thought about my life long dream of starting a metal band with some downies called "syndrome of a down". That's all carry on.

IMO Ward +Moore is a better combo then Byrd + nacho. SS was one of our weakest positions since Dawkins got injured. Bryd is better then moore but ward is such a huge upgrade.

Ward is a very physical safety in the box. He does not any from hits and will take on anyone and does well on TEs. Second team all pro. Due is good. About time a guy who can sit on some of the middle and stop some of quick middle routes and give pass rush more time.

That is what 5.5 mills year for pro bowl caliber player. Look at Byrd he wants 9 mill a year. I take it since a quality young starter is 3.5 mill a year. He is what 25 or 26?

We got a bargain for Ward compared to what the others paid.

We also had to pay full price for Talib. I will laugh my ass off if the Pats dont land Revis. Champ may end up in NE if the Revis deal bottoms out. :(

Lancane
03-12-2014, 07:13 AM
Ward and Moore could make up the best Broncos safety tandem since Atwater and Braxton, that is huge considering that Talib is heads and shoulders above Ray Crockett who was our top corner during those same said years, Harris is also better then most of the corners we had during that time frame. So right now, I think at least on paper it's fair to say that we have the strongest backfield we've ever had.

I love the Ward signing, not too fond of Caldwell but I understand it...the one that makes me iffy is the addition of Talib, more because of injuries then because of talent or off the field issues.

I'm still hoping for Denver to sign Allen/Ware/Peppers and Rolando McClain (despite the hate)...that would be a solid free agency IMHO, even with the questionability of Talib.

Lancane
03-12-2014, 07:17 AM
With Ward coming to Denver could his cousin follow in his wake, he'd have to come relatively cheap but he could rotate with Ball and give us an effective duo in the backfield?

Add OL to this post and I agree (except with McClain).

McClain makes sense because of the top inside linebackers most are gone or in talks with other teams, we're looking at second tier backers at this point and if Denver decides to wait till the draft, signing a young veteran looking to re-establish his career and to finally live up to his draft grade, it could be a good deal. I don't believe that Spikes, Jordan, Sharpton are better then him and he'd be cheaper then other options, at worse he becomes solid depth. Denver has a limited pocketbook at this point, I still believe Denver's top target is Allen, they may settle for Ward, but Peppers could enter the mix if they can not ink either of the two. As to guard or offensive linemen, the Broncos pre-draft interviews have been with guards, and the likely scenario is Denver signing Nwaneri if anyone at this point.

I didn't know that about the pre-draft interviews. After watching the moves yesterday, I assumed OG is going to be addressed in round 1 or 2 of the draft. Now that assumption has a little support.

MLB has been a hot issue the past two years and we are still talking about it today. It is such an enigma. However, all the options you listed are an upgrade over Paris Lenon.

Bosco
03-12-2014, 04:05 PM
While I'm happy with the Ward signing, finding an upgrade over Rahim Moore was the far more critical need. I would have rather had Byrd and a more budget friendly option at SS.

That said, Ward will go a long way toward instilling attitude and physicality in a defense which is sorely lacking both.

Our free safety is league average on his very best days. That's just not good enough for such a critical position on a team looking to win a championship with a closing window.

My ideal scenario would have been getting Byrd, bumping Moore down to SS and letting he, Ihenacho and a hopefully healthy Quinton Carter fight it all out.

All is not lost though. Carter beat out Moore for the FS spot when they were rookies and if he can come back healthy I think he could do it again. That would be a huge coup for this defense.

Player Summary

TJ Ward is a Pro Bowl Caliber Strong Safety. He excels in man coverage, especially against TE’s, and in shallow zones. Ward demonstrates great quickness, and has a physical presence. Ward has faced no problems in man coverage covering TE’s and slot receivers. In zone, TJ was proficient in underneath zones, grabbing a pick-6 vs Buffalo and several passes defended. As one of the best run defending DB’s in the entire league, TJ Ward graded out as the top run defending safety in the league (per PFF). Ward diagnoses the run quickly, and flies downhill with great range. His overall grade was the 5th highest among all safeties. This skill set also applies well to DB Blitzes, recorded pressures on approximately 25% of his pressures.
Players's Fit in Denver

TJ Ward will immediately replace Duke Ihenacho and Mike Adams as the starting Strong Safety. He will play closer to the line of scrimmage, with his main responsibilities being manning up on TE’s and run support. Ward will add toughness and a safety valve to an already excellent run defense. In addition to stellar run D, Ward ads a physical presence at SS we haven’t seen since Weapon X was manning centerfield. Adding a true playmaker to the DB group will be a welcome addition after the mediocrity we saw in pass D last year.
Final Thoughts

Ward’s biggest additions to the Broncos will be to eliminate TE’s from the opponents game plan, and provide an elite safety valve in the run game. We should see a decrease on long running plays with Ward moving downhill into the box. This a great move to sure up the Strong Safety position.

Up next

/u/MasonL52 gives us the run down on the newly acquired investment in brutal nasty, Demarcus Ware.

Anyone else feel that TJ Ward might be our best signing out of the bunch we got? Like FRANCHISE SAFETY worthy? I do.

John Lynch/Dawkins signing, but younger and hell yes. The more I hear Cleveland guys coming on Denver and national radio the more I love this signing.
