The memory of the expression on quarterback John Elway's face remains clear. It might be permanently etched in Ed McCaffrey's mind.
Elway was turning to face his teammates after taking a knee that ran out the game clock. After four unsuccessful tries over a span of 20 years, the Broncos finally had won a Super Bowl.
It was Jan. 25, 1998, at Qualcomm Stadium in San Diego and when Elway stood up the scoreboard read: Denver 31, Green Bay 24. The Broncos finally had jettisoned the tag of Super Bowl losers.
"I was on the field for that play and when I saw John's face it was a look of ultimate accomplishment, happiness and relief that it was over," McCaffrey said. "I still can see him now."
