A major aspect of the NFL's ongoing initiative to create a safer game has been the increased penalty enforcement on contact to the head and neck areas of players considered defenseless.

An unfortunate side effect of this added protection has been the propensity for game officials to mistake a legal hit for something that's not. The speed of the game invites human error into the equation, and the current rules do not allow these type of impact calls to be challenged.

During his exclusive sitdown with NFL Media's Rich Eisen on NFL Network's "NFL Total Access," Commissioner Roger Goodell said he's had conversations on the issue with several coaches this season. Goodell expressed his optimism these penalties soon will be reviewable.

I wish they'd just punish guys for targeting and get rid of this whole "clean hits to some areas are penalties/fines/suspenions; dirty hits to other areas aren't" crap. They came up with a bad rule that not only doesn't fix the problem, but actually makes it WORSE by encouraging guys to go low even though it raises injury risks (gee, look at all the ACL tears all of a sudden.) So now they're going to add ANOTHER bad rule to fix one of the new problems the FIRST bad rule made, while worsening the one about which it did nothing. Yuck.

Interesting how this thread gets no replies since it's a rule change that most fans would probably agree with. Must be some disappointed people that they can't bash Goodell for another one of his crazy ideas!

He was (way over)due, and this one's a no-brainer: Goodell's clearly the man for THAT job. ;) But seriously, no one will pat him on the back for THINKING about cleaning up his OWN mess BADLY.
