A very nice but very long history of the Dreamcast, Sega's last console. As a longtime gamer of Sega back in the day (I still have both a working Master System and Genesis) I liked the system and they had some great games, but I thought they had the worst controller ever made, even worse than the original XBox clunker.

You can buy a used Dreamcast at Play N Trade used game retailers for $25 and games can be burned or bought used for $5 and up.

Very nice article. If you remember Dreamcast check it out.

I wanted to buy one of these for Soul Caliber and Marvel Vs. Capcom 2 soo bad when they came out. I was working graveyard shift as a security guard at the time at Cherry Creek Mall. I should have just stolen one!

Too bad they couldn't have tried to stick it out, now with a majority of games going multiplatform.

Sega consoles go back into the 80's with me and I spent much of my adolescent gaming years on a Sega machine. My second/technically third console was a Master System. Phantsay Star was the first RPG I ever played on one of my machines, other than the original FF, Dragon warrior, and Hydlyde on my friend's NES.

I was a Sega gamer before even Sonic, and still have about 10 Master System games.

I have a Genesis with Tecmo Super Bowl too. Not a lot of games worth getting for that, with a lot of compilations out for the PS2 and 360.

There's been rumors of Sega getting back into the hardware market and making a console for the next generation, but I'll believe it when I see it.

Its amazing the Dreamcast didn't succeed with so many classic (now) titles looking back.

I put in a bid on E-Bay for a factor sealed Dreamcast with about everything you could think of and 18 games. Just got outbid on it and I don't think I'll go up. I enjoy some of the old games, but I'm not going to pay 200.00+ for something when I can get a new system with games for just a little more than that. I didn't figure I'd have as much free time as I do and find myself kicking my own butt for dishing off my 360 last year because I was in a money crisis. Been playing a lot of N64 lately.

I found a N64 literally just yesterday at the thrift store here with all the connecting cables, F-Zero and Shadows of the Empire, and a controller for $25. I should have bought it, but I can't justify it because I didn't know if it would work and its so easy to find free emulators of all that stuff online. I have a NES, SNES, Genesis, N64, and Dreamcast emulator on my computer with easily over 20-40 games for each system in a folder and the whole thing barely takes up 1 gig of memory. The only system I found worthwhile that plays classic games is the FC Twin: http://www.amazon.com/Video-System-Silver-NES-Super-Nintendo/dp/B000SC1MUM

It plays NES and SNES games, and the games are really cheap still (except for things like the gold Zelda cartridge, most of the games run only $4-$25. Its really cool to play these games on a HDTV with the letterboxing on the sides!

That Dreamcast controller looked like something else...

The original Xbox controller never bothered me, but if you had small hands you were kinda boned.

Craigslist or a local Play N' Trade one can be found on the cheap.

I still have mine....Still have the little portable memory that was also a gaming unit that slides into the controller.

Every now and then I hook it up and play a little Sonic the hedgehog (Best version) and soul caliber.. Some other games like NBA on NBC kick ass too. Brings back good memories..

Dreamcast and the original xBox controller were just fine. If they added an analog stick and 2 more shoulder buttons to the Dreamcast one, it would compare to the 360. The worst controllers were PS2. The analogs are hard to reach and the grip isn't very ergonomic. Atleast the triggers are better on the PS3, I really wanted the Boomerang though.

I still have a working Dreamcast. However lid no longer hits the switch that tells the unit that its ok to spin disks. SO I have it rigged that it will always spin disks.

I didn't like the Dreamcast controller or the original XBox 'Duke' Controller, the smaller one was much better. The Dualshock I got used to but I like the 360 controller so much better now.
