After several days of stalled talks, the Los Angeles Lakers and Cleveland Cavaliers made progress Saturday on a trade that would involve Pau Gasol and Andrew Bynum, sources told ESPN.com.

The Cavaliers want to execute a trade by Sunday so it can be completed ahead of Tuesday's deadline for Bynum's contract to become fully guaranteed, sources said. Trades need 48 hours to be finalized so players can have physicals.

The Cavs have been involved in talks with other teams looking to take advantage of Bynum's contract. The deal is for $12.3 million this season but if a team waives Bynum by Tuesday it will owe him nothing because the $6.3 million left on the contract is not guaranteed if he's released by that date.

In trying to understand this, if it happens - it appears the Lakers will free up a lot of money by trading Gasol, and then it appears that the Lakers will waive Bynum by Tuesday. There have been rumors that Melo wants to play for the Lakers. Could this be what is behind this?

The Cleveland Cavaliers traded Andrew Bynum in time - and got an All-Star in return.

Along with Bynum, who had recently been suspended indefinitely by the Cavaliers for conduct detrimental to the team, the Cavaliers also sent the Bulls a first-round pick, two second-rounders, and gave Chicago the right to swap first-round choices in 2015 if the Cavs are not in the lottery.

Deng has been an All-Star the last two seasons. But he will be a free agent after this season, and with Bulls' championship aspirations gone following Derrick Rose's season-ending knee injury, there was no reason to hold onto him and risk losing him for nothing.

Wow, the Bulls will end up with a pretty high pick most likely.

edit:

They will probably end up with two picks in the top 10.

There are only so many who are over 7 feet tall and athletic.

Besides, he may be aloof and bi-polar, but he's not a thug.
