At one point this season the Chargers had a winning record at 4-3. They had high hopes for the rest of the season. Since then they have only won two of the last six games.

With new head coach Mike McCoy running the team they are 6-7 and are still in playoff contention.

They have been quite a surprise this year, mainly Phillip Rivers. Rivers, who had a struggle last year, has had quite a season. He ranks fourth in passing yards per game, fifth in touchdowns, and is first in completion percentage. With three games left in the season he is only eight touchdowns away from his career high in touchdowns.

The Chargers have had one of the most powerful offenses in the league this year. They are fourth in total yards per game, and are one of only four teams that average more than 400 yards per game.

Their powerful offense is based mainly off the passing game. They rank 20th in rushing yards per game and 24th in total rushing touchdowns. Stat wise their leading back has more receiving yards and touchdowns than rushing.

You would think a team with a top five offense would be in solid position with only three games to go. However this team has a lot of struggles. San Diego ranks 22nd in red zone touchdown percentage and they are outside the top 10 in points per game....CONTINUE READING... For what it's worth, running VERY well is how SD beat a Colts team that still had Reggie Wayne, but Indy's ranked pretty lowly vs. the run (allowing 4.4 yds/att, bottom ten.) Yet that's still better than the 4.8 yds/att SD allows, worse than everyone but Chicago, and the 8.4 yds/att they allow vs. the pass is worse than all but Washington. It's no wonder they'd like to run and sideline opposing offenses whenever possible: Their D is virtually helpless against run or pass. Unfortunately for them, their 23rd ranked 3.9 yds/att is among just 10 rushing averages worse than ours.

Could be a shootout tomorrow, especially if our D doesn't bring it against Rivers. Our statistically good run D can probably handle them even with Vickerson and Wolfe gone, but our offense won't put them away early without help from our pass rush and/or secondary. If we let SD hang around we could meet KCs fate; the Chiefs might well have scored yet again vs. that awful Bolts defense (it was by far KCs best offensive outing before last week) but had no time to do so. Time to step up and earn that #1 seed, D.
