The word out of San Diego is, barring unexpected progress, a resolution to the LaDainian Tomlinson restructured contract talks will not be done by the time general manger A.J. Smith speaks to the media. Smith will address the media at 12 p.m. PT. Smith will discuss the team's free agency issue. The Tomlinson situation may take a couple of more days to resolve.

I don't expect Tampa Bay star linebacker Derrick Brooks to end up in the AFC. Anything could happen, but I don't see him being a great fit for an AFC west team. One player who was purged in Tampa on Sunday who could fit in the division is receiver Ike Hilliard. He could potentially get interest from Oakland as could Joey Galloway. Hilliard would be less expensive though. The Oakland Tribune looks at a couple of other receiving possibilities for the Raiders.

If Shaun Rogers can wiggle his way out of Cleveland, both Denver and Kansas City could be players for the massive defensive tackle. He'd fit in scheme cities. Last year, while under the Mike Shanahan regime, Denver tried to trade for Rogers while he was with Detroit.

While it is a fluid situation, the word Wednesday is that Raiders' receiver Javon Walker is leaning toward playing this season and is open to taking a pay cut from Oakland. This situation could be cleared in the coming days. Meanwhile, the Raiders are trying to re-sign guard Cooper Carlisle, one of the team's best offensive linemen. If he becomes a free agent, Carlisle could be popular on the open market.

In addition to Grady Jackson, other defensive tackles Denver may look at in free agency include Mike Wright and Colin Cole.

The Chargers gave tenders to two restricted free agents.

• Still no word out of Kansas City on Larry Johnson's future. The team will likely try to trade him, but he could end up getting cut in the coming days.

• If Dallas cuts safety Roy Williams, Denver could be an option. The Broncos are looking at safeties in free agency. New England's James Sanders also is a possibility.

• The Broncos could be in on St. Louis cornerback Ronald Bartell in the coming days. If Dallas defensive end Chris Canty is unsigned after the first couple of days of free agency, Denver could get into the picture.

• The Chiefs extended tenders to restricted free agents safety Jarrad Page, center Rudy Niswanger and receiver Jeff Webb.

• The Broncos are set to gain about a $4 million in salary-cap credit for bonuses linebacker Louis Green didn't achieve. Denver has more than $40 million in salary-cap room as free agency is about to start.

• It will be interesting to see if San Diego shows any interest in guards Brandon Moore and Kendall Simmons, who were cut by the Jets and the Steelers, respectively. The Chargers might be in a market for a guard.

• The Broncos, at this point, are not looking for a replacement for young kicker Matt Prater, who struggled in the second half last season, but rather someone to compete with Prater.

Broncos emerge as candidate for Lewis
Ray Lewis | Ravens | Interested: Broncos? Cowboys? Jets?
While the Baltimore Ravens have feverishly tried to retain linebacker Ray Lewis over the last few weeks, his name has been linked in various sources to both the New York Jets and Dallas Cowboys. Amid the smoldering chaos as the league has finally entered the opening day of free agency, a darkhorse candidate out west has emerged according to the Baltimore Sun: the Denver Broncos.
Lewis and nascent Broncos defensive coordinator Mike Nolan worked together when Nolan had the same position with the Ravens, and according to the Sun, the two would meet one-on-one on a weekly basis to work on game-plans. In addition, the Broncos have been cutting dead weight since the promotion of general manager Brian Xanders, and the team is expected to be around $30 million under the salary cap. Lewis would be a solid tackling machine in the middle of the field as well as a vocal leader as the team installs Nolan's schemes.

Scott could be a member of Gang Green by today
Bart Scott | Ravens | Interested: Dolphins? Broncos? Buccaneers? Browns? Chiefs? Giants? Jets?
According to the Sporting News, Bart Scott is set to visit with the New York Jets on Friday morning. The Jets are expected to make Scott a strong offer to reunite with his former coach Rex Ryan, and sources have told Albert Breer of the Sporting News that Scott could sign with the team as early as today.
The Ravens made an effort late into Thursday night to re-sign Scott, but it appears that the Jets are now the front-runners for the linebacker's services. The New York Giants, Kansas City Chiefs, Cleveland Browns, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Denver Broncos and Miami Dolphins have all previously been rumored as possible destinations for Scott.

If Scott does land in New York I don't see how Baltimore could not bring back Ray.

Free-agency update: Denver staying busy.

The first hours of free agency are cranking hot and heavy. But the AFC West has been fairly quiet.

Most of the news is coming out of Denver where the Broncos are looking to add new pieces to the puzzle -- not major pieces here, more like complementary pieces.

Receiver Jabar Gaffney is visiting Denver. He played for new Broncos coach Josh McDaniels in New England. He would be a fourth receiver behind Brandon Marshall, Eddie Royal and Brandon Stokley.

The team is also hosting running backs Correll Buckhalter and J.J. Arrington, who would both will be role players. Miami safety Renaldo Hill is also visiting. All of these players could sign with Denver soon. Denver needs safety help and the steady Hill would be a good start.

Meanwhile, in San Diego, there are rumblings the Chargers may bring back Drayton Florence. He went to Jacksonville as a free agent last season but he was recently cut. Florence has already visited Buffalo. He'd be a role player in San Diego.

There was some talk that Kansas City could get involved with linebacker Bart Scott but he has already agreed to terms with the Jets. The Chiefs, as they have been in every aspect of their operations this offseason, have been quiet in the early hours of free agency despite having more than $50 million in salary-cap room.

Here's a name to keep an eye on in Denver: Marques Douglas. The defensive end was just cut by Baltimore. He played for new Denver defensive coordinator Mike Nolan in both Baltimore and San Francisco. The Broncos have a need for a player such as Douglas. This could be a perfect fit. Nolan is also trying to get defensive tackle Ronnie Fields, who played for him in San Francisco.

Signing players who are familiar with Nolan's system will be important as Denver transitions to becoming a 3-4 defense.

The Broncos agreed to terms with Miami cornerback Andre Goodman Sunday evening, their ninth free agent acquisition. Goodman agreed to a five-year deal worth $25 million and a little more than $10 million in guarantees.

Goodman is the third new starter in the secondary and will join Champ Bailey at cornerback. The Broncos signed safeties Brian Dawkins and Renaldo Hill.

Goodman replaces salary cap causality Dre' Bly. Goodman had a fine season with Miami but he is 30. He is known as a good locker room presence and should be able to play alongside Bailey for a couple of seasons, at least.

The team is still working on trying to save the contract of running back J.J. Arrington and it is still talking to free agent Derrick Ward.

Meanwhile, Oakland guard Cooper Carlisle visit to Tampa Bay is still on and has been pushed back a few days. Oakland is still trying to re-sign him.

Here is a chilling story on Oakland linebacker Marquis Cooper who is missing at sea in Florida.

With the Broncos trying to mend fences with starting quarterback Jay Cutler, the team is reportedly going to visit with Titans quarterback Chris Simms.

Simms would be brought in as Cutler's backup. The team is not going to re-sign Patrick Ramsey, who was Cutler's backup the past two years. New Denver coach Josh McDaniels must feel that Simms fits his system well.

The word out of San Diego is that the Chargers and the agents for LaDainian Tomlinson are still chugging away at a restructured contract that would keep Tomlinson in town but there is no timetable for a decision.

The Raiders re-signed guard Cooper Carlisle and tight end Tony Stewart. Re-signing Carlisle was big for Oakland. Many thought Carlisle was the team's best lineman last season and he was being courted by other teams. Oakland is looking at several other linemen as well, including Buffalo's Duke Preston.

The Kansas City Star reports receiver Bobby Engram has left his visit with the Chiefs without a contract and that the team is looking at linebacker Clark Haggans. The linebacker would be a nice addition for the team that needs a ton of defensive help.

Defensive tackle Grady Jackson is close to joining Detroit. Denver had an interest in him.

Buffalo has agreed to terms with cornerback Drayton Florence. San Diego was considering signing him.

Former Broncos running back Ron Dayne is looking for a job after mending from an injury last year.

The Denver Post reports the Broncos are shopping tight end Tony Scheffler because new Denver coach Josh McDaniels prefers three receiver, one tight end sets and Scheffler won't fit. Scheffler played with blocking tight end Daniel Graham in double tight end sets in Denver.

Scheffler is a fine down-field option and he could attract interest on the open market. This news may not make Jay Cutler any happier with the Broncos. Scheffler is one of his favorite targets and the two are close friends.

In the same article, the Post reports that Denver receiver Brandon Stokley restructured his contract to keep him in Denver. This is a good move. Stokley is a terrific third-down receiver and a leader in the locker room.

The Chargers are visiting with Dallas linebacker Kevin Burnett. He has already visited Oakland.

Former Denver long snapper Mike Leach will be visiting in Arizona and Seattle. Leach is considered one of the better snappers in the league but he was suddenly cut by Denver when the team signed New England long snapper Lonie Paxton.

This won't make the Raiders happy. When the Raiders agreed to cut running back LaMont Jordan last year, the team asked that Jordan not sign with two teams -- New England or Denver. Jordan signed with New England last summer. Wednesday, he agreed to terms with the Broncos.

The San Diego Union Tribune reports the Chargers will not pursue receiver Terrell Owens or safety Roy Williams. Both players have been cut by Dallas.

While many folks are concentrating on Owens ending up in Oakland, Williams could be a possibility. He grew up near Oakland and the Raiders could use a safety.

The Oakland Tribune reports the Raiders recently visited with quarterback Kyle Boller. The former Cal standout would come in as a backup quarterback if signed.

The Chiefs are looking at free agents Keary Colbert, Keith Davis and Travis Daniels.

Oakland free-agent return man Justin Miller visited with the Titans. Miller made an impact when he was claimed off waivers by the Raiders.

Comments about LT's deal could be telling.

While we've been waiting to see whether LaDainian Tomlinson and the San Diego Chargers will agree to a restructured contract to keep the running back with the team, Tomlinson and his mother have been talking publicly about the negotiations over the past 24 hours.

From their comments, it seems like there could be a chance Tomlinson doesn't return. Tomlinson said Wednesday night he is optimistic but he realizes that it's a business decision. Thursday morning, Tomlinson's mother told a San Diego radio station that the situation doesn't look good.

Her comments certainly won't doom the talks but it does make you wonder whether Tomlinson and the team could split. I have long thought a resolution would be made because both sides want to keep Tomlinson in San Diego. The talks are dragging on and that could be a sign of complications.

There has been speculation around the league that Tomlinson may be reluctant to take a cut. If that is the case, he will likely be released, which would be a sad ending for one of the most popular and productive players in team history.

I still believe the two sides will work something out because everyone involved realizes Tomlinson's legacy in San Diego is important. But the recent comments indicate that coming to a resolution will not be easy.

Breaking news: Javon takes paycut

Raiders wide receiver Javon Walker did a "major restructuring" of his contract, a league source familiar with the significantly reduced deal told The Chronicle this morning, allowing him to stay on the team for a second season and giving the Raiders much-needed cap relief.

For starters, Walker's $5 million roster bonus was eliminated -- well, sort of. Instead of a bonus, he'll get his adjusted base salaries guaranteed for the next two seasons against skill, injury and cap.

As far as average annual salary goes, Walker went from (potentially) $9 million a year to $3.2 million a year.

He makes $2 million in base salary this season and $2.6 million next season -- that accounts for all but $400,000 of his roster bonus. But be sure, he's losing serious money with slashed base salaries.

He was due $4 million this season and $6 million next season. He also will make $3.2 million in 2011 (instead of $8 million), $3.8 million in 2012 (instead of $10 million) and $4.4 million in 2013 (instead of $10 million).

Of course, those latter years were inflated to begin with and the Raiders were never going to keep him around at those costs.

The Raiders win because his cap number just plunged from nearly $10 million to $2 million this season. Walker wins, sort of, because he would not have likely made anything close to this on the market if the Raiders released him, which a source said they were ready to do if he did not agree to a restructured contract.

Agent: Crennel not going to KC at this time

March 5, 2009 8:21 PM

The agent for former Cleveland head coach Romeo Crennel said there are no plans for him to be become the defensive coordinator of the Kansas City Chiefs.

There head been reports that said Crennel was mulling an offer from Kansa City. However, Crennel's agent, Joe Linta, said Crennel is fully focusing on recovering from a hip replacement surgery he had last month and that Crennel was fired by Cleveland at the end of last season.

"That is not going to happen at this time," said Linta of Crennel joining the Chiefs. "Coach is focusing on his rehabilitation and then he will entertain opportunities in both football and in the media. He is looking forward to what lies ahead."

Still, Linta didn't rule out the possibility of Crennel speaking to the Chiefs about a consulting role or coaching role down the road. Crennel was the defensive coordinator in New England when new Kansas City general manager Scott Pioli was there.

"Coach and Scott have always had a good relationship and I'm sure the line of communication between them will continue in the future," Linta said.

Kansas City has yet to designate a defensive coordinator. At the NFL combine last month, new Chiefs coach Todd Haley wouldn't discuss Crennel and said he was still working on his staff.

Pros and cons of Terrell Owens becoming a Raider

March 6, 2009 1:55 PM

Posted by ESPN.com's Bill Williamson

The talk of Terrell Owens going to the Oakland Raiders will not die until he signs somewhere. Here are the pros and cons of signing Owens, who was cut by Dallas on Wednesday. For those who are counting, the Cowboys were Owens' third NFL team -- each of which parted ways with him when he became a distraction.

PROS OF T.O. BECOMING A RAIDER

1. He would fill a need. The Raiders are in desperate need of a quality veteran receiver. Owens, 35, may be in decline but he is still better than anybody Oakland has at receiver.

2. He would help the run game. The presence of Owens would take pressure off the Oakland running game, which is the bright spot of the team. He would make defenses play honest.

3. He would make the Raiders relevant again. There would be a reason to pay attention to this team again.

CONS OF T.O. BECOMING A RAIDER

1. It wouldn't work. It never works with Owens.

2. He's not a winner. Owens' teams usually fall short and he makes a stink when his team loses. How would he react when the Raiders, who have won an average of four games a season for the past six seasons, go on a skid?

3. It could affect quarterback JaMarcus Russell adversely. Owens' biggest negative is the detrimental effect he has on quarterbacks. Russell is still trying to find his way. If Owens were to have the same effect on Russell as he has had on past quarterbacks, it could affect Russell's career.

Report: Source says Oakland won't sign Owens

March 6, 2009 5:30 PM

Posted by ESPN.com's Bill Williamson

The San Francisco Chronicle is reporting a source said the team will not sign wide receiver Terrell Owens. He was cut by Dallas this week. Owens has been on three NFL teams and has been jettisoned by all three.

Oakland has been mentioned as a possibility to sign Owens. The reason why Oakland has been connected to Owens is that it has need at receiver and owner Al Davis has had a history of signing renegade players.

However, this source is poking holes in that theory.

Of course, what matters most in Oakland is what Davis feels and what he wants. Until he says the Raiders are not interested in Owens, it has to be considered a possibility.

Olshansky goes to Dallas

Olshansky
Igor Olshansky, one of the bigger names available in free agency from a weak AFC West class of unrestricted free agents, is out of the division.

The San Diego defensive lineman has signed with the Dallas Cowboys. Olshansky's departure from San Diego was expected. The team had no intentions of re-signing him.

Olshansky had an underwhelming season in 2008. It has been suggested that certain teammates questioned Olshansky's attitude. Olshansky fits in Dallas because the Cowboys use a similar scheme as the Chargers. Dallas head coach Wade Phillips is familiar with Olshansky from his time in San Diego.

The Chargers may look for defensive line help early in the draft.

Chiefs honor former kicker

The Kansas City Chiefs have named former kicker Nick Lowry as their 2009 inductee into the Chiefs Hall of Fame.

He is the 39th member of the Chiefs' Hall of Fame. He will be enshrined during a weekend during the NFL season. He is Kansas City's all-time leading scorer with 1,466 points.

"On behalf of our family and the entire Kansas City Chiefs organization, we are extremely pleased to welcome Nick Lowery into the Chiefs Hall of Fame," Chiefs Chairman Clark Hunt said in a statement. "Nick's penchant for making long-distance kicks and his history of last-minute heroics in pressure-packed situations made him one of the most admired kickers in the National Football League. Denver

* Shannon Sharpe can relate to Jay Cutler.

My take: This is another reminder that many great players have been discussed in trade talks. But Cutler's situation is unique because he's a quarterback and is building a relationship with his new coach. All players who are a part of trade talks likely have trust issues with their teams, but Cutler's problem with trust is heightened because of the circumstances.

Kansas City

* The Kansas City Star's Jason Whitlock says it's fine to question the new regime.

My take: New Kansas City general manager Scott Pioli has an excellent track record and while his moves in Kansas City have been few, they have been thought-out and impactful. Give the guy time.

Oakland

* Justin Fargas gives his thoughts.

My take: Many Raiders fans want the team to trade Fargas. I believe he can be a part of a solid three-man committee with Michael Bush and Darren McFadden.

San Diego

* Drew Brees wants LaDainian Tomlinson in New Orleans.

My take: If Tomlinson gets cut, New Orleans will likely become the favorite to land him. Brees and Tomlinson came into the league together with the Chargers and remain good friends. Also, Tomlinson would fill a need for the Saints. A reunion would make sense if a new deal can't be worked out with the Chargers.

Chargers, LT working until the end

March 9, 2009 1:56 PM

It appears we may learn the fate of star running back LaDainian Tomlinson in San Diego shortly.
Tomlinson

ESPN's Chris Mortensen is reporting that the talks between Tomlinson and the team are in the final stages concerning a restructured deal that will keep the longtime star in San Diego. If Tomlinson and the team can't figure out a way to restructure down from his nearly $7 million salary due this season, Tomlinson will likely be cut and end up elsewhere. There is also a chance Tomlinson could be traded.

Still, Mortensen reports that the Chargers and Tomlinson are still trying. Mortensen said that the latest offer isn't a take-it-or-leave from San Diego and that the two sides are trying to come up with ways giving Tomlinson a solid deal.

This is another indication that the two sides want to make it work. No one in this situation wants Tomlinson to leave. That's one of the reasons why this tough negotiation has taken so long. The two sides are doing everything they can to make sure they've exhausted every avenue before parting ways, if that is the case.

While there is no hard deadline, both sides want a resolution. If he is cut, Tomlinson will need to find a new job (New Orleans seems to be a strong possibility) and the Chargers will have to begin plans to replace him.

Meanwhile, in Mike Sando's NFC West blog, Scouts Inc. scout Matt Williamson suggests that Tomlinson is near the end. Tomlinson, who will be 30 in June, had his least productive season in 2008 and he has been bothered by injuries in the past two postseasons.

AFC West teams will get together soon

March 9, 2009 4:41 PM

The run for the 2009 season is about to commence. Teams are preparing for the start of their offseason conditioning programs.

The programs are voluntary but nearly every player on every team participates, especially since many players have large bonuses for participating in the workouts that are written into their contracts.

Some players have agreements worked into their deals with teams that allow them to work out on their own.

Still, these offseason conditioning programs kick off the season. Many of them last into the summer. Teams, of course, having minicamps and passing camps worked around the offseason conditioning program and are usually held in May and June.

Here is a look at the AFC West team's offseason conditioning program starting dates:

* Denver: March 16
* Kansas City: March 30
* Oakland: March 16
* San Diego: March 30

ESPN's Mel Kiper has never been high on Jay Cutler and he is sticking to his guns.

ESPN's draft guru chimes in on his thoughts on Cutler after Denver considered a deal that would have shipped Cutler out in exchange for Matt Cassel on Feb. 28. The link requires a subscription but it's worth a gander.

It is clear Kiper never liked Cutler and he is focusing on the Broncos' 17-20 record with Cutler under center as well as Cutler's penchant for making an occasional poor throw.

Look, I'm saying this right here: Kiper is a terrific talent evaluator. I've respected him for years and have long used him as a source at draft time. He's a pro and I couldn't do what does.

But I think he's wrong on Cutler. Look, as I remember, Kiper liked Vince Young and Matt Leinart better than Cutler when the three quarterbacks came out in 2006. To Kiper's defense, so did many in the league as Young was drafted third and Leinart was drafted 10th. Cutler went 11th.
But Cutler has been much better than Young and Leinart after three seasons. Cutler earned a trip to the Pro Bowl player in 2008 and Young and Leinart were backups on their teams.

Yes, Cutler has improvements to make but he is 25 and has played 37 games. He has improvements to make. Cutler isn't elite yet but he could be on his way and to say he's overrated, is harsh.

Afternoon AFC West news

March 11, 2009 2:44 PM

Posted by ESPN.com's Bill Williamson

There are some interesting AFC West ties in the new UFL coaching lineup.

The startup league has announced its coaching roster of its four-team league. The coaches are Ted Cottrell, Jim Fassel, Dennis Green, and Jim Haslett.

Cottrell was fired as the defensive coordinator in San Diego at the mid-way point last season. Cottrell finally gets his chance to be a head coach after years of being a defensive coordinator.

Fassel, Green's and Haslett's names all were connected at some point to the Oakland head coaching job in the past year. None of the coaches ever became major figures in the process before Tom Cable was hired, though.

Former Denver general manager Ted Sundquist is interviewing with the Arizona Cardinals for a position in the team's front office. Sundquist would be a terrific hire for the Cardinals.

Sundquist is organized and bright and has an excellent scout's eye. His unexpected firing from Denver last March was the first of many in a front office shakeup in Denver that continued into this year.

Evan from Fresno, CA: Hey Bill, I thought I knew what kind of player the chargers would be drafting-a running back or a middle linebacker-but now that they've signed Burnett and Tomlinson, which players do you think they are likely to go after?

BW: I think a linebacker could still be the answer for the Chargers at No. 16. A defensive lineman or a safety could be targets or perhaps a guard could be the way San Diego goes in the first round. I don't think the Chargers will take a running back in the first round, but there are plenty of other options.

Chris from KC: Is there a real chance that KC could pick up Orland Pace? What kind of money is he worth?

BW: Not sure what kind of money Pace would be seeking but the Chiefs have plenty of money and they have a need. I could see it being a good fit.

Jay from Chicago: Bill - If Cutler doesn't show up to mini-camp this week, will that be a signal that he's not willing to play for McDaniels and that they should move forward in trading him? Denver can get anything they want for Cutler right now and if they don't trade for a QB, Rex Grossman is out there and still can play. That might be a huge downgrade, but the guy's been to the Super Bowl. Any thoughts on what happens if Cutler doesn't show up to camp?

BW: If Cutler doesn't show up, it could be trouble. I know for sure that Cutler is thinking about not showing up Monday for the offseason workout program. If he doesn't show, this saga will go to a new level and the Broncos will have to think of other options.

Big J from sacramento: Bill, what are my Chiefs doing? We know what they are not doing, and that's signing players. Any chance we look at Tank Johnson or Kevin Burnett? We desperatly need help along the front 7 and both of these players could be had at resonable prices. Also, what's up with kicking situation? Why not bring in Stover to compete with Barth?

BW: Burnett, of course, is off the table now that he signed with San Diego. Johnson could be a possibility. I'm with you, Big J. The Chiefs have been much quieter than I thought they would be in the first phase of free agency.

AFC West salary cap update

March 12, 2009 4:57 PM

Posted by ESPN.com's Bill Williamson

While there is plenty of time remaining in the offseason, much of the money-spending portion is in the books.

Free agency has slowed down and is in the second-tier mode. So much of the team's spending will be dedicated to paying draft picks and some complementary players.

So it's a perfect time to get updated on salary cap numbers for the AFC West teams. Here is the latest information:

Denver

Cap room: $16.3 million.

Note: Does not reflect the Kenny Peterson signing that will only slightly alter the number.

What's left to do: Denver would like to add some defensive help, but he team doesn't have much cash left to pay signing bonuses after adding a dozen players early in free agency. Don't expect a lot more movement other than the draft or if the Jay Cutler saga deteriorates to the point where Denver trades him. Whatever Denver needs to do, it has the cap room to do it.

Kansas City

Cap room: $36.2 million.

Note: Does not reflect the Travis Daniels contract, it will only slightly alter the Chiefs' cap situation.

What's left to do: The Chiefs have more needs than what's available on the market. The Chiefs need to add in several areas on defense and perhaps on the offensive line. The Chiefs can do whatever they want with their truck load of cap room.

Oakland

Cap room: $13 million.

What's left to do: The Raiders need a receiver and a tackle. Oakland has the cap room if it wants to sign a veteran tackle like Orlando Pace. But after last season's spending spree, will the team want to throw out another big bonus?

San Diego

Cap room: $9.1 million.

Note: Does not reflect the signing of Kevin Burnett and the new contract for LaDainian Tomlinson. The team will lose a little for Burnett and save about $2 million with the Tomlinson deal. It will have ample cap room to do what it needs to do.

What's left to do: The Chargers could still use a safety, a defensive lineman and an offensive lineman. The Chargers are usually quiet in free agency so don't expect a late splash, but they can make a couple of small moves if they wish.

Events of the day could affect Cutler pursuit

March 19, 2009 6:18 PM

Posted by ESPN.com's Bill Williamson

There were two developments Thursday that could have some bearing on the Jay Cutler situation in Denver.

First, Georgia quarterback Matthew Stafford had an excellent performance at his pro day. He displayed great accuracy and command and the showing could help him become the No. 1 pick in the draft. The Detroit Lions, who own the top pick, were, of course, present.

If the Lions were blown away by Stafford, they could decide to use their top pick on him. Detroit has been linked to talks about Cutler. It would likely take a package that included the No. 1 pick for Detroit to get the disgruntled quarterback. Perhaps Stafford's pro day performance will make Detroit decide that drafting him would be their best bet.

In Cleveland, defensive tackle Shaun Rogers has skipped the first few days of the Browns' offseason workout program. An Ohio newspaper has already suggested that perhaps the Browns will trade Rogers and quarterback Brady Quinn for Cutler. With Rogers staying away from the Browns' offseason program, which Cutler is also doing in Denver, it could make the Browns consider dealing him.

Rogers certainly fits Denver's needs. The team has long been searching for a dominant anchor for the defense. The Broncos tried to acquire Rogers from Detroit in 2008 before he was sent to Cleveland.

This development could be a step closer to putting Rogers on the trade market, along with a certain quarterback in the Rocky Mountains.

The rarity of the Cutler saga

A large part of the intrigue of the Jay Cutler fiasco is that it is so rare.

Sudden divorces between young, standout quarterbacks and their teams seldom occur. When teams get ahold of young, talented quarterbacks, they usually try to hang onto them. Every team's goal is to get a franchise quarterback.

The Denver Broncos, who drafted Cutler with the No. 11 pick in 2006, clearly thought he was that player to lead them for the next decade-plus. Now, thanks to the mess that began with Denver considering trading him three weeks ago, which resulted in Cutler publicly asking for a trade, that plan is in jeopardy.

What seemed inconceivable three weeks ago could now happen. A 25-year-old Pro Bowl quarterback who isn't in his prime yet (he has started only 37 NFL games) could be traded. It just doesn't happen much.

Here is a look, going back 15 years, at some of the QBs who were traded in the middle of their careers and how it worked out for them and their new teams.

We will start with Jeff George, who is the most comparable to Cutler because of age.

Jeff George

* Year traded: 1994
* Age: 26
* From where to where: Indianapolis to Atlanta
* Cost: Two first-round picks and a third-round pick.
* How it worked: George had some success in Atlanta, but he didn't live up to the trade cost. He got his passing yards in the Falcons' run-and-shoot offense and the team made the playoffs in his second season in Atlanta. But the George-Falcons marriage fell apart in 1996, his third season with the team. He was shipped to the Raiders in 1997. It began a vagabond NFL life for George. He ended up playing for seven teams in 17 NFL seasons.
* Compared to Cutler: Cutler will be 26 next month. George was 26 when the Colts traded him. He was considered a young gun as Cutler is now.

Brad Johnson

* Year traded: 1999
* Age: 30
* From where to where: Minnesota to Washington
* Cost: First-, second- and third-round picks.
* How it worked: Johnson played well in 1999. He blossomed into a star and he had one of the best seasons ever by a Redskins quarterback, making the Pro Bowl. It seemed as if Johnson was worth the steep price, but he made a lot of mistakes in 2000 and fell out of favor. He was traded to Tampa Bay after the 2000 season and won a Super Bowl in his second season with the Buccaneers. Johnson, released in the offseason by Dallas, has had an average NFL career and he wasn't worth the bounty the Redskins gave up for him.
* Compared to Cutler: Not a very similar situation because he was already 30 and the Vikings had Randall Cunningham when Johnson was dealt.

Rick Mirer

* Year traded: 1997
* Age: 26
* From where to where: Seattle to Chicago
* Cost: Mirer and a fourth-round pick were traded for a first-round pick.
* How it worked: Mirer was a high-pick flameout in Seattle after four years and his career didn't take off after the trade to Chicago. He barely played in Chicago and was cut the following year. The Bears gave up plenty for Mirer and he never was worth the cost. Mirer flopped around the league, playing for five more teams after being cut by Chicago.
* Compared to Cutler: Yes, Mirer was young when he was traded, but he already was a failure as a starter. Cutler is establishing himself as a premier player.

Trent Green

* Year traded: 2001
* Age: 30
* From where to where: St. Louis to Kansas City
* Cost: Green and a fifth-round pick for a first-round pick.
* How it worked: Pretty well. While Green was injury-prone often in his career, he was a solid player for the Chiefs. He was a legitimate starter in his six seasons with Kansas City and the Chiefs were regular playoff contenders. Green wasn't a star, but he was a solid player and he gave the Chiefs a chance to win.
* Compared to Cutler: Not very similar. Green was older, but he wasn't as established as Cutler -- he had started only 19 games before he was traded.

Matt Schaub

* From where to where: Atlanta to Houston
* Year traded: 2007
* Age: 25
* Cost: Two second-round picks
* How it has worked: Schaub has the look of a solid player. He has been a starter since going to Houston. He has battled injuries and growing pains. But the Texans remain committed to him and he seems like he could have a good future. It appears that it was a worthwhile trade for Houston.
* Compared to Cutler: Schaub was young, but he was a backup with very little game experience when he was traded, so his situation doesn't compare as well to Cutler's as George's does.

If you want to go further back, you can look at Brett Favre and Steve Young being traded, but again they don't compare to George and Cutler.

Favre had almost no game experience when he was dealt from Atlanta to Green Bay in 1992. Young, who was 25 when he was traded from Tampa Bay to San Francisco in 1987, was a backup for several years after he was dealt. And, of course, there is Matt Cassel, who played a central role in the Cutler fiasco. He was traded to Kansas City along with linebacker Mike Vrabel from New England for a second-round pick after one effective season with the Patriots. But we have no idea how that will play out.

Quarterback trades are not completely foreign, but their success rates vary and the reasons usually have to do with age and skill level.

Cutler is young and has shown he can play at a high level. Thus, as you can see, there are few trades involving quarterbacks that compare directly to Cutler. That's why this situation is so rare.

Denver

The Broncos have gotten calls from more than 10 teams about Jay Cutler.

My take: The phone is going to continue to ring. This is an unusual situation. Star 25-year-old quarterbacks aren't always available. Teams will continue to pursue Cutler. The thing is, right now, that Denver doesn't want to trade Cutler at this point. Until Denver decides it will trade Cutler he isn't going anywhere.

Kansas City

Here is a mock draft that links Michael Crabtree to Kansas City.

My take: It would be a bit of a surprise but I think it would be a good thing. If Wake Forest linebacker Aaron Curry is not on the board at No. 3, perhaps Kansas City should consider taking Crabtree. Paired with Dwayne Bowe, Crabtree would give new Kansas City quarterback Matt Cassel a dynamic pair of receivers and it would set the tone for the Todd Haley era.

Oakland

Nnamdi Asomugha: All-around good guy.

My take: Asomugha is a first-class person. First, of all, he is one of the best cornerbacks in the NFL. Most importantly, he is a terrific person off the field. Every time I've talked to Asomugha, I've been blown away with his intelligence and grace. The Raiders may be famous for their renegades of yesteryear but Asomugha is both a standout on and off the field.

EKUBAN VISITS RAIDERS

Posted by Aaron Wilson on March 20, 2009, 6:44 p.m. EDT

Free agent defensive end Ebenezer Ekuban has visited the Oakland Raiders, according to a league source.

In 10 starts last season with the Denver Broncos, the 32-year-old veteran pass rusher recorded five sacks and 38 tackles.

For his career, the 6-foot-4, 275-pound former University of North Carolina standout has registered 36 1/2 sacks and 224 tackles.

Over the past three seasons in Denver, Ekuban has 16 sacks. He has previous stints with the Cleveland Browns and the Dallas Cowboys.

Chiefs, Chargers takes

Kansas City

The Chiefs are going to work out former Florida State defensive end Everette Brown.

My take: This is no surprise. The Chiefs need defensive players and Brown is one of the best defensive players on the board. Still, it would be a bit of a surprise if the Chiefs took Brown with the No. 3 pick. Unless he is extraordinarily impressive in his private workout, Brown likely won't be picked in the top five. Still, Kansas City could always trade down a few spots and take Brown. It's clear he will be on the team's radar as the draft approaches.

San Diego

Kassim Osgood is on the trading block.

My take: Osgood wanted this and now he could get his wish. Osgood is an excellent special teams player. He is an impact player there. Still, he wants a chance to play receiver and the Chargers clearly only see him as a special teams player. The San Diego Union Tribune reports that the team would likely low-round pick for Osgood. The Chargers would miss Osgood on special teams if he was dealt but overall it wouldn't be a huge loss.

In a move that confirms the Dolphins' desire to transition newly signed center Jake Grove into the starting job, Miami traded center Samson Satele to the Oakland Raiders for an undisclosed draft pick, two sources said Sunday night.

Satele, a second-round pick in 2007, started every game he played for Miami over the past two seasons since former coach Cam Cameron and former general manager Randy Mueller drafted him.

However, the team's new regime decided it was time for an upgrade after Satele struggled to deal with some of the bigger nose tackles in the AFC East, specifically the Jets' Kris Jenkins and the Patriots' Vince Wilfork.

Although Grove does not have much more size than Satele (both weigh about 300 pounds, but Grove is an inch taller at 6-4), the Dolphins believe his skill set makes him better equipped to handle the bigger players that concern Miami.
Heard it's for a 6th rounder in this year's draft, unconfirmed.

Chargers get two fourth-round picks

March 23, 2009 8:38 PM
Posted by ESPN.com's Bill Williamson

DANA POINT, Calif. - The good news for the San Diego Chargers is they received two compensatory picks Monday in the April 25-26 draft.

The bad news is the team didn't get as high of picks as it may have hoped. The Chargers received two fourth-round picks, the 133rd and 134th overall choices. The team lost running back Michael Turner and cornerback Drayton Florence through free agency last year. Comp picks are based on the previous year's loss in free agency.

Turner, who signed a six-year, $34.5 million deal from Atlanta last season, was a star for the Falcons. He had 1,699 rushing yards and 17 rushing touchdowns for the Falcons. Florence was signed by Jacksonville and cut this offseason.

Many league observers thought the Chargers would get at least one third-round pick because of the losses. Only three third-round comp picks were awarded.

Meanwhile, Kansas City was given an extra pick as well. The Chiefs received an extra seventh-round pick, the 256th and final choice. The NFL always gives 32 comp picks but only 30 picks were earned. Thus, the league went to the top of the draft order and gave the Chiefs ended up with the last pick.

That means their pick will be forever known as Mr. Irrelevant, 2009. Mr. Irrelevant is awarded every year by a Newport Beach, California group to the player who is the final pick of the NFL draft.

None of the comp picks can be traded.

DANA POINT, Calif. - It is being reported that Kansas City will visit with Wake Forest linebacker Aaron Curry.

The Chiefs have the No. 3 pick and Curry is expected to be the first defensive player off the board. The Chiefs' primary needs are on defense. Kansas City's interest in Curry is no surprise. If he is on the board and the team doesn't want to trade down, he could be the likely selection.

The word around the lobby at the NFL owners' meeting was that the West Cost teams aren't overly thrilled with the fact that East Coast teams are getting a break coming out West. Some West Coast representatives argued that their teams are at a disadvantage because they have to travel to the East Coast and often play in games that start at 10 a.m. Pacific.

Still, don't expect any change. The NFL feels restricted enough in its scheduling and to schedule every game of a West Cost team playing on the East Cost for a 1 p.m. Pacific start is not going to happen.

With their acquisition of Miami center Samson Satele, the Raiders are no longer pursuing Buffalo center Duke Preston.

There will be some history made when Oakland and Denver play on Thanksgiving. The Raiders haven't played on Thanksgiving in 39 years and Denver hasn't hosted a Turkey Day game in 46 years.

QB Garcia negotiating with Raiders

Free-agent QB Jeff Garcia is reportedly close to signing a deal with the Oakland Raiders, according to NBC Bay Area Sports. A source close to the negotiations told the NBC affiliate a deal is close and “will probably get done.”

It would mark Garcia’s second stay in the Bay Area, as he started his NFL career with the San Francisco 49ers (1999-2003).

Garcia played in 12 games for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers last season. He finished with 12 touchdowns, six interceptions and 2,712 passing yards in 11 starts.

Denver

Kyle Orton loves the idea of playing for an offensive-minded coach.

My take: A lot of folks believe Orton can thrive under new coach Josh McDaniels because of McDaniels' system which had fast success with Matt Cassel last year. Orton is a decent quarterback but he is not a special quarterback. It wouldn't be a surprise if Orton was efficient under McDaniels but it would be a huge surprise if he became a dominant, game-changing player. The Broncos need a dominant offense because of their lackluster defense.

Kansas City

The Kansas City Star believes the Chiefs need to take a pass rusher at No. 3.

My take: The Chiefs set an NFL record for the fewest sacks in a season with 10 last year. I believe the Chiefs must take Wake Forest's Aaron Curry if he is on the board at No. 3 and if the Chiefs don't trade down. He is, by far, the best defensive player available. The team can't afford to get cute with this pick. Curry has to be the guy. He'll make the entire front seven better.

Oakland

Jeff Garcia is ready for anything in Oakland.

My take: Garcia is saying the right things, but he is competitor who is used to playing. Expect him to try to impress the coaching staff enough where he can steal the starting job from JaMarcus Russell. I don't think Garcia will win the job in training camp. The only way Garcia will play is if Russell gets hurt or if he regresses badly during the season. The Raiders want Russell to succeed but Garcia is a solid insurance policy.

Klis: If Jaguars dance, Broncos pick No. 8
By Mike Klis
The Denver Post

Broncos coach Josh McDaniels and general manager Brian Xanders can lock themselves into secrecy from now until draft day, and it might not matter.

There is a potential trade so logical, it all but leaps off the draft value chart.

Providing the Jacksonville Jaguars are willing partners, the Broncos could easily leap from their No. 12 overall draft pick to No. 8. (Credit the Walter Camp draftniks for first pointing this out).

The No. 8 spot would be significant to the Broncos if their preference is defensive tackle B.J. Raji, quarterback Mark Sanchez or Texas defensive end/outside linebacker Brian Orakpo.

As it stands now, someone would have to lace Raji's brownies between now and April 25 for the projected 3-4 nose tackle to fall past Green Bay with the No. 9 pick.

The San Francisco 49ers, having failed with Alex Smith as their franchise quarterback, cannot allow Sanchez to drop beyond their No. 10 pick.

And Orakpo, a physical freak who possesses the greatest pass- rushing potential, probably wouldn't get past Jacksonville at No. 8 or Buffalo at No. 11.

According to the last known draft value chart, the No. 8 draft pick is worth 1,400 points while the No. 12 pick is worth 1,200. To those who had a little too much Saturday night fun, that's a difference of 200 points.

That extra third-round pick the Broncos got from the Bears in the Jay Cutler trade? It allows the Broncos to sacrifice their first third- round pick, No. 79 overall. The No. 79 pick is worth 195 points on the draft value chart.

Or close enough.

McDaniels and Xanders would never state their preference with their No. 12 pick. But it's no secret they may have to move up to get him.

Report: Falcons Still Want Gonzalez
Posted by Mike Florio on April 13, 2009, 10:10 a.m.
Though it remains to be seen whether tight end Tony Gonzalez wants out of Kansas City, one team that tried to get him in 2008 reportedly still wants him.

Michael Lombardi of NFP reports that the Falcons are “seriously interested” in trading for the veteran Pro Bowler, and might be willing to give up their second-round pick in the draft (55th overall) to make it happen.

We see several issues with this one:

1. Do the Chiefs want to trade Gonzalez at all? For now, the answer isn’t clear.

2. Does Gonzalez want out? Again, unclear.

3. If Gonzalez wants out, would he be willing to play for the Falcons? One thing we know is that Gonzalez wanted no part of the Falcons during the 2008 season, when the Falcons made a play for acquiring his services. So has Gonzalez’s position changed?

4. With two former New England colleagues calling the shots in Kansas City and Atlanta, would this be an impediment to getting a deal done, or would it help? Chiefs G.M. Scott Pioli was able to strike a deal with Pats coach Bill Belichick for quarterback Matt Cassel, but the second-round pick the Chiefs gave up for Cassel and linebacker Mike Vrabel prompted suspicion that Belichick handed Pioli a sweetheart deal. So would Pioli and/or former Pats director of college scouting Thomas Dimitroff be leery of the aftermath of a trade for Gonzalez, and would they feel the need to drive a harder bargain in order to avoid being criticized?

We’re not saying the trade can’t happen. But several hurdles would have to be overcome in order to make it so.

Denver and Kansas City headlines

Denver

Knowshon Moreno is already a winner.

My take: Moreno just won a rookie touchdown celebration contest. I get the feeling he will get the chance to display the celebration often. The Broncos are going to center their offense around the rookie tailback. Moreno, the No. 12 overall draft pick, will be a three-down player for Denver. He could be a legitimate rookie of the year candidate.

Kansas City

The Chiefs' offense is unsettled.

My take: The Chiefs have some decent pieces on offense and that unit is definitely further along than the Kansas City defense. But there are questions on offense, for sure. The offensive line is unsettled and the passing game will miss Tony Gonzalez. However, new quarterback Matt Cassel has to find a way to produce or this will be another tough season in Kansas City.

Denver

Former Denver cornerback Dre' Bly is meeting with San Francisco.

My take: Bly was somewhat of a whipping boy in his two seasons in Denver. Sure, he gave up some big plays (Denver fans will never forget the loss to Green Bay in overtime in 2007), but he is still a decent pro. Bly, who was cut by Denver early in the offseason in a salary-cap move, can help someone for the short term. The 49ers could do worse than Bly at this point.

Oakland

Ken Stabler believes in JaMarcus Russell.

My take: Russell needs all the supporters he can get. I just get the feeling the heat is going to be on Russell often this season. It has already started with the shadow of Jeff Garcia. If Russell does not improve, his Oakland tenure will be in question. The fact that one of the most popular figures in Oakland history is behind Russell can only help the young quarterback as he enters a crucial year.

people always want to blame bly for that OT TD against GB. I always blame Bailey for letting a long one go early in the game. Isn't he supposed to be the one that DOESN'T get beat?

Blame it on Coyer or Slowik. Mike Nolan will not gonna let it happen.

Denver coach Josh McDaniels indicated that receiver Brandon Marshall, newly reinstated from a team-imposed team suspension, could end up playing in Sunday's game at Cincinnati. When asked how Marshall, who was suspended after making a mockery of practice Aug. 26, has been practicing this week, McDaniels said: “great.”

Oakland coach Tom Cable hinted that the Raiders may be talking to Richard Seymour about a contract extension. It may be the team’s best chances to get Seymour into town.

It will be interesting to see if tackle Langston Walker, cut by Buffalo, could end up in Oakland. The Raiders could use help at right tackle. Walker left Oakland as a free agent to sign with the Bills.

The Broncos were happy with how starting quarterback Kyle Orton practiced and expect him to play Sunday. He suffered an index finger injury Aug. 30.

Guard Kynan Forney signed with Jacksonville. He was a surprise cut by San Diego.

The Chiefs’ brass promised the public the team will work hard in 2009.

These reports are erroneous and probably not true, because many think Bill Williamson is an idiot. :rolleyes:
