How aggressive do you think the Broncos were? If Minnesota wanted a 2nd rounder, would you have done it? That's a really high price to pay for a guy of Allen's age who is going to be a FA at the end of the season and costs a lot of money. Under the new CBA, you can roll over unused cap room from year to year, so Denver's using up cap room, a draft pick, and with no assurances he's even going to be on the team past a few months.

How aggressive can you really get in that situation?

Elway doesn't want to give up draft picks for a guy who play half a season or us, especially when the line is playing so well.

Elway values his draft picks more than rental players, regardless of how talented they are. He knows that championships are built through the draft and supplemented through free agency. Look at his drafts. He trades down often, to multiply those picks. There is a ton of young talent on this team.

What would you give up for Allen? A 2nd round pick, and lose a guy like Orlando Franklin to have a 30 something DE play for 9-11 games? How about a 3rd? Kayvon Webster may be our star CB of the future. 4th? I love the what Julius Thomas adds to this offense. 5th? Malik Jackson is getting better every game. 6th? Danny Trevathan is a future pro bowler and possible future all pro. 7th? Worst case scenario on Dysert is that he's a decent depth QB. These are all Elway picks over the last 3 years. Not every draft pick is a hit, but you don't want to lose out on a future star to get a player that's at the end of his career and will most likely leave at the end of the season.

Oh, and welcome to the forum Elvie.

Because side by side numbers show that Phillips was simply as good if not better, while Ayers and Jackson were on pace for career years. It's just a matter of perspective, in some aspects. Also, I don't think that Minnesota was asking too high a price, the Broncos were closer to a deal then some think - but Minnesota didn't want to have to pay half of his remaining salary and wanted the Broncos to pay the full sum for what is essentially a half year rental.

According to some reports the haggle was over how much of the $7.5 mill he's owed would be paid by the Vikings. But the brass has also denied any interest, too.

I think they denied it despite reports as to not alienate the current roster, which is completely understandable. But they also showed interest in Joe Thomas earlier on and that wasn't as adamantly denied. So who really knows, except themselves and those they dealt with in other organizations.

Interesting. There seems to be a strong move inside the NFL toward preventing "leaks". Secrecy is a big issue with the NFL these days, or so it seems. Several breeches of secrecy, such as with Von Miller, etc. have really pissed off the NFL. I remember how upset Elway was when the von miller info was leaked. Leads one to believe there is a lot of things that go on that very few of us will know about.

Agreed...

...if Denver can't generate pressure with Von and the 'other' side (Phillips/Ayers/Smith/Jackson/Wolfe) then they don't deserve to be in the playoffs...
