The 2-3-2 NBA Finals format is following David Stern out of the league.

NBA owners unanimously voted Wednesday to return to the 2-2-1-1-1 format, believing the travel inconveniences that teams faced when Stern became commissioner nearly 30 years ago no longer exist.

Beginning with the 2014 finals, the higher-seeded team will host Games 1, 2, 5 and 7. The lower seed gets Games 3, 4 and 6, following the same format the NBA uses in all other rounds.

The current format was instituted in 1985, Stern's first full year in charge, in part to ease the amount of cross-country travel with the Celtics and Lakers frequently meeting for the championship. But critics felt it gave an edge to the lower-seeded team.

Great move. 2-3-2 is just a weird format. It puts the higher seed in danger of elimination of the lower seed defends their home court, but it also makes it really hard for the low seed to defend their home court. I guess that makes it even in a way, but 2-2-1-1-1 just makes way more sense IMO.

I'm pretty sure baseball is 2-2-1-1-1 in their seven game series.

Not in the last two playoff series we just saw it wasn't. Unless they've changed the World Series, its not.

It makes more sense in baseball to go 2-3-2 because its the nature of a sport that plays every single day. The series starts tonight and ends next Thursday.

They got at least every other day in the Finals, so go 1-1-1 to finish off the series and you might end up getting a little more drama, plus it aligns with the rest of the playoffs. To me it didn't make sense to change the format for the final.

Hockey has a 2-2-1-1-1 format for the entire playoffs, as well.

Now if they could just complete the playoff series in a reasonable timeframe we'd be getting somewhere. The 3-4 day layoffs between games are absurd.

Yes. the "every game must have its own time slot" way of thinking is ridiculous. If I'm the NBA, I'm playing games on two or three networks each night. Keeps the fans of just one team a little more engaged, IMO.

Teams howled that the favorite played the "pivotal" Game 5 on the road but I actually preferred to have Games 6 and 7 in the home court of the favorite as it put pressure on the underdog to close out the favorite in five games or win the playoff on the other team's court. Personally, I'm for 2-3-2.
