Not 12 hours after landing back in Denver after his team's 39-33 loss in Indianapolis, and coach John Fox was charged with summing up a somewhat surprising defeat. There was no point in thinking big, about Super Bowl hopes and his superteam — they don't talk about that, Fox said — and instead, the coach looked at the micro.

They were tough enough, he said, but they need to play smarter.

In addition to too many turnovers — three or four, depending on whether one counts Peyton Manning's sack and fumble as one — and excessive penalties, the team also lost cornerback Champ Bailey to injury; he re-aggravated his left foot sprain after being cleared to play just a week before.

Some smarter coaching wouldn't hurt either.

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. -- Any talk of the Broncos remaining undefeated throughout the 2013 season came to an end with Sunday's 39-33 loss to the Indianapolis Colts at Lucas Oil Stadium.

Now, the Broncos need to continue "the growing process" moving forward with one game remaining until the club's bye week.

But Head Coach John Fox doesn't buy that a team can learn more from a loss than a win.

"I’m a believer in you get better every week. Hopefully you're learning all the time regardless of game outcomes," he said. "Not too many teams go through these seasons unscathed. I think it’s only been done once in 35 years. That’s why it’s hard to repeat, that’s why it’s a pretty competitive game. I expect us to learn. Just like all mistakes, you admit them. You’ve got to fix them and do your best not to let them happen again.”

Below are the highlights from Fox's weekly press conference looking back at the previous game.

Some smarter coaching wouldn't hurt either.

My thoughts exactly, especially from the DC, OC, and RB Coach.

Pertaining to the game last night, what are you referring to?

Pertaining to the game last night, what are you referring to?

Bad defensive scheme. Bad offensive play calls. Player conduct. Ball security. All coaching problems.

Terrible clock management also. Should've kicked the FG immediately when it was within range on that final drive. Also probably shouldn't have gone for two because then it would've been a 1 possession game.

They missed the 2-point conversion down 18.

Pertaining to the game last night, what are you referring to?

Putting in Hillman at the goal line late in the game, not challenging the potential Decker TD, and playcalling to be specific.
