View Full Version : Who is your favorite unheralded Bronco of all time?

BroncoWave

This idea just popped into my head and I thought it would make for a cool discussion. Basically, who is your favorite Bronco of all time who was little known, didn't play here long, or just wasn't very good? The more obscure the better. I think it would be interesting to learn about lesser-known former Broncos.

Mine isn't exactly lesser-known, but my answer to the question would be Tatum Bell. I will never forget the game where we signed him off the street from selling cell phones and played him in the Week 17 game where the Chargers destroyed us to end our playoff hopes. Bell was the one bright spot in that game as he looked like pretty much the only player giving that much of an effort. I always thought he was fun to watch play and I miss having him on the team.

He wasn't my favorite, but I always remember that game Quentin Griffin had against the Chiefs.

I could name a bunch. Allen Aldridge, Maa Tanuvasa, Keith Traylor, Howard Griffith, and Brian Habib all come to mind just from our SB XXXII team alone, but my favorite might have been Mike "The Beast" Lodish. He played in 6 SBs and was always one of my favorites when he played here. My favorite Mike Lodish memory was seeing him punch Stephen Wiesnewski in the dick on Monday Night Football.

Yes, all of those you named. There was also Cookie Gilchrist, Bob Scarpitto,
John Bramlett, Dave Costa, Al Denson, Mike Haffner, Larry Kaminski, Billy
Van Heusen, Paul Smith, Barney Chavous, Claudie Minor, Keith Bishop,
Tom Glassic, Bob Swenson, Rubin Carter . . . oh my, did I miss anybody?

But my favorite might have been Van Heusen. Man, I loved to watch him
take off on those fake punts! Those were some of the more unforgettable
moments during a forgettable era . . .

The tandem of Smith and Atwater comes to mind for me. Just watching them fly into the hole and destroy the RB. Remember the hit on Okoye?

As far as running backs, I will always remember when Sammy winder was in his last year, and in the last game or last home game coach Reeves tried gruys hardest to get him into the end zone so he could do his Mississippi mud dance. He never got in, but he did it after we turned the ball over on downs.

I liked Shane Dronett cause he would throw up on the centers hand before the snap and Luther Ellis because I knew him when he played college ball. Neither were good but Broncos for a little while.

I would pick:

QB: Tim Tebow

WR: Ashley Lelise

TE: Dwayne Carswell & Byron Chamberlain

RB: Olandis Gary & Aaron Craver

LB Ian Gold

DB Nick Ferguson, Kenoy Kennedy, and Lenny Walls

Van Heusen is a favorite of mine as well. In 1974 he was not only a Pro Bowl punter but a starting WR - and he averaged a ridiculous 26 yards per catch. Great on deep crossing routes. His knees were crap though, and his career as a WR was on and off

Olandis Gary is a good one. I remember him scoring a touchdown in overtime after Trevor Price stripped Rich Gannon a play earlier in the snow at Mile High on a monday night. I was there with my Mom.

Orson Mobley. No real reason.

Rob Lytle and Norris Weese because I met them at Gart brothers when I was a little kid. Like 3 or 4 years old.

Yah he was going to be our savior at RB. Something we hadn't had in a long time up to that point if ever really. I think he had a drug problem or something like that and it ended his career..........I think.

Whenever I started becoming more of a sports fan, Brian Griese was quarterback. So, I would have to say him.

Obviously, Broncos fans loved them. But most people don't think about Tom Nalen, Matt Lepsis, Ben Hamilton, and the other OLinemen in the early 2000s.

Ed McCaffery was awesome. I enjoyed watching him.

Ian Gold.

Again, Broncos fans loved him, not as much known league-wide, IMO. Al Wilson.

Mike Anderson was one of my favorite runningbacks of all those lesser known RBs.

I really liked Jeb Putzier while he was in Denver.

Depends on your definition of unheralded.

Some non-stars that come to mind are Steve Sewell (but he was a pretty big part of the offense in his day, but he's not a name you often here thrown around) and Kubiak for doing the backup work.

Maurice Clarett... But seriously, just going for an obscure player player who contributed a ton for this team, I'd say Keith Burns. Dude was an animal on special teams and filled in well when needed to sub on Defense. Was a captain and is now coaching under Shanny in DC. I also met him shortly after the Super Bowl runs and he seemed like a great guy.

Dan Neil was one of my many favorites. I loved how he was so small yet at 285 pounds he kicked ass when he lined up against bigger DTs. Gibbs had a great eye for talent and finding pieces who could fit perfectly in the ZBS scheme. Unfortunate injuries derailed his career here.

Steve Sewell - he was with us for many years, but no one really ever thinks about his contributions to the team. I think he is still with the organization - but I don't remember in what capacity.

Bobby Humphrey - supplemental draft pick who had an 1100 yard season his rookie year and 1200 the next. Then the idiot held out for more money and fell out of favor with the Broncos. Effectively ended his career. He could have been something special if he had a few more brain cells.

Rob Lytle - tough as nails. Was really an asset to the team.

Tim Tebow reminded me of Norris Weese. Could extend plays with his feet,
but couldn't throw the ball into the ocean. Another like them was Bradlee
Van Pelt. At least they were fun to watch at times . . .

That was also about the time that there was a philosophical change from Bum Phillips' 3-4 defense to the Dick LeBeau 3-4 defense...schematically it was an interesting turning point.

Another guy I liked was George Coghill. He took some flack for not making a play in the giants game in 1998 that ended our perfect season but I always appreciated him as a hard worker and special teamer. He had a really cool attitude also, I remember that he got cut one time during camp and he just went home and got a job as a HS teacher, he later got resigned and said he had always planned to be a teacher when his playing career was over. Guess what he's doing now, that's right he's a teacher and coach.
