View Full Version : Broncos' fast-break offense fits John Fox better than you might think

John Fox was exasperated. A little more than three minutes remained in the first half Thursday night, and the Broncos had just finished an offensive series that sputtered. It started promisingly enough at the Baltimore 49, but the drive almost immediately lost its rhythm. There was a no-huddle play, a false-start penalty, a huddle-'em-up, and again a no-huddle.

The next thing you know, it's fourth-and-21, and Britton Colquitt is punting. Broncos boss Fox, who is 58, has the reputation as a defensive-minded coach who prefers a conservative, ground-and-pound offensive style. He has a first-year offensive coordinator in Adam Gase, who is 35 and eager to attack NFL defenses with a frenetic, rest-is-for-Tuesday tempo.

Fox is a boss who lets his assistants do their jobs, but doesn't his gut instinct occasionally want to approach Gase and tell his young assistant to slow down?
