View Full Version : NFL dares to goad Denver fans with Ravens signs

Get this. Because the NFL promotes both teams for its Annual Kickoff Game, the league is putting up signage of both the Ravens and Broncos around Sports Authority Field at Mile High and downtown Denver. So if you see large posters of not only Peyton Manning but Joe Flacco, blame the league. If Ravens signage creates a graffiti disturbance around downtown Denver, blame the league.

Who in Denver wants to drive to work in the morning and see a reminder of Joe Flacco? I know it’s a unique situation where the defending Super Bowl champ opens on the road. But no circumstance will change the fact Denver belongs to the Broncos.

Denver - Broncos fans are doing a double take after seeing a giant photo of Baltimore Ravens quarterback Joe Flacco on the side of Sports Authority Field at Mile High.

The Denver Broncos tweeted Monday afternoon that the mammoth banner -- which includes a Peyton Manning photo on one side -- is designed to NFL specifications to promote both teams playing in the 2013 Season "Kickoff Game" between the Broncos and the Ravens on Sept. 5.

"Because the NFL promotes both teams playing in its annual Kickoff Game, fans will notice signage outside @SportsAuthField and around town that features the Broncos and Ravens," the Broncos tweeted. "But regardless of league guidelines, this will always be #BroncosCountry and we can’t wait to see all the orange in the stands a week from Thursday!"

The only place I have seen the signage is downtown on 16th Street Mall which is not shocking because that is a top 5 tourist destination here. One of the reasons I like to walk there on my lunch is because all of the people watching. You see a lot of tourists and out of town visitors there on business so you will always see advertising for reasons to come back.

Yeah, the NFL does this every year. It's only newsworthy this year because it seems a little more odd putting up banners on a stadium of the team that just knocked you out of the playoffs last year. Since the SB winner has always hosted this game, there's no residual pain from whatever team they are playing.

I was listening to Drew/Scott on the fan on my way home from the grocery store, and they had one of the studio people check to see if Romo's picture was up at the Giants' stadium for the NFL opener - answer no, also, other opening games between the SB winner - nothing was posted for the visiting team.

Drew just said that the Orioles offered to change the start time of their game from 7:00 to 4:00. The Ravens felt it would be a logistical nightmare.

Drew/Scott are talking with one of the NFL guys now who is trying to justify why it is being done.

They are still talking about it, and Drew said that he feels the NFL is taking care of the Ravens. I had no idea that there are also Raven banners on the 16th st. mall.

Denver Native (Carol)
08-27-2013, 02:54 PM
Drew just said that they will be running the conversation with the NFL guy again this afternoon, as they were receiving many texts from Bronco fans, who felt this guy was very arrogant. I agree - one thing he said was something like you should feel lucky, as the Broncos are hosting a national tv game????? EXCUSE ME - the Broncos HAVE hosted national tv games MANY times!!!!!!

This NFL guy also admitted that if this game were being played in Baltimore, the opposing QB's picture would NOT be hung at Baltimore's stadium.

Is there some reason the Raven's are supposed to only play 7 road games this year? If you didn't want them opening on the road then DON'T HAVE THEM OPEN ON THE ROAD.

Otherwise, shut your NFL pie holes. At least the fans should be good and angry (angrier?) and will actually work to give us back our traditional home-field advantage.

Which really isn't that big of a deal. I'd rather have Joe Flacco on the stadium than have to go play them in Baltimore. It's tough to win that week 1 Thursday game on the road. Since they started playing that game, the defending SB champ has only lost once.

DENVER (CBS4) – CBS4′s Vic Lombardi has been named Colorado Sportscaster of the Year by the National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association.

The win, which was announced on Friday, marks the first such award for Lombardi, who has already won numerous other awards for his sports coverage, including more than 20 Emmy Awards. One radio or television broadcaster from each state is chosen for the annual awards.

Lombardi’s coverage of the Broncos signing of Peyton Manning during 2012 was exemplary, as was his coverage of the Broncos memorable 2012 season. His “Vic’s Signature” reports on CBS4 News at 10 also continue to be very popular.

“Vic is that rare sports anchor who is both a creative presenter and a serious journalist. This is a well deserved honor,” said Tim Wieland, CBS4′s news director.

The Broncos, several people with the team say, resisted the idea of the Flacco banner hanging from the stadium, but the league overruled those objections.

"We appreciate the fans passion and their desire to protect their team but think of this game as more of an opening ceremony, a celebration of the new season for the entire league," said Brian McCarthy, NFL vice president of corporate communications. "This game will be viewed by an audience of millions and reflects the opening of the season. There will be similar banners hanging in Baltimore at the events there next week as well."

The banners have been the subject of several locally televised reports, including one where a sportscaster used a Sharpie to draw a mustache on one of the Flacco banners in downtown Denver.

The images also brought a barrage of Twitter activity and the banner at the stadium, which sits alongside Interstate 25 in Denver, has been met with an orchestra of car horns and shouts.

I just don't get how this is effective marketing... I get the NFL wants to celebrate the opening of the football season, but there are tons of ways they could have done this without pissing off the whole of Denver. The Flacco banner on the stadium was a mistake, plain and simple. Can't find one reason that was an effective way of showing the city of Denver that week 1 is around the corner... Two helmets clashing would have much much more appropriate for the stadium, IMO.

I told my friends about the radio guys calling for a paintball gun revolt to "decorate" the Ravens banners... even he admitted that Raven fans would be pissed if the same thing happened to them. But he also said Ravens fans wouldn't use paintball guns...

Nail on the head. It's pretty obvious how effective the marketing was. They have managed to make the NFL Kickoff game (which is always one of the biggest sports stories of the year) into an even bigger story. The NFL is probably doing backfilps in happiness with the attention this is getting.

Wow, that last line says it all.

I was curious, so I was trying to find pictures of Metlife stadium from the kickoff game last year. I found a few on Getty Images, and from what I could tell, they didn't have any special banners of any kind.

I'm changing my stance on this if this is a special deal, because the Ravens couldn't host the game.

“We respect the fans’ passion and enthusiasm for the game,” said Brian McCarthy, NFL vice president of corporate communications. “This will be in many ways a Super Bowl-like atmosphere with a national audience to kick off the season. It’s a tremendous matchup, but built around it is some of our activities that you would see at a Super Bowl or you’d see at an international game where you promote both teams.”

McCarthy noted that in the 2007 kickoff, there were giant banners of Saints running back Reggie Bush hanging alongside those of Manning, then with the Colts, in Indianapolis. Last year, there were subway lines named for Dallas QB Tony Romo and Giants QB Eli Manning. And the year before that, a huge banner of Saints QB Drew Brees hung alongside one of Green Bay’s Aaron Rodgers at an arena near Lambeau Field.

The difference is, this is the first time the giant banner of a player is hanging on the opposing team’s stadium.

I totally blame the NFL for this. WHY could they not have done the same thing which was done two different times

This first game of the season is usually scheduled for the Thursday following Labor Day. However, in 2008 and 2012, the game was moved to Wednesday to prevent conflicts with the acceptance speeches of the 2008 Republican National Convention[1] and the 2012 Democratic National Convention

I checked the Orioles schedule, and on Wednesday Sept. 4th - the Orioles play AT Cleveland. So, there would have been no conflict with the Orioles having the Ravens open up the season, AT HOME, on Sept. 4th.

Since the powers to be chose to keep the game on Thursday, there would not have been the uproar in Denver, as there is now, if they would have just put on posters - NFL Kickoff game, Thursday, Sept. 5th, Broncos - Ravens, rather than feeling it was perfectly OK to put Flacco's mug on a poster, hang it on the Broncos' stadium, and all would be OK

Carol, they interviewed the Mayor of Denver on 104.3 yesterday (not sure if you heard it) and he stated that the NFL "paid for that advertising space" (referring to Mile High Stadium).

I blame the Broncos for this.

The Broncos do NOT own the stadium:

Who owns Sports Authority Field at Mile High, located in Denver Colorado?

You are right. He first said the payment for the ad would have been made to the Broncos, then he back tracked and blamed it on the stadium committee or something.

The best thing about this situation is that the fans in Denver are so passionate about the Broncos that this is not acceptable. Some trolls come on here talking about how we are bandwagon fans. This proves that we are the best fans in the NFL....of course I'm biased. So what!

Are any of the "Flacco" banners accessible enough to where I can urinate on one???

Hey, Joe Flacco feels your anger, Denver.

He knows how his Baltimore Raven fans would react if, say, the NFL decided to put an oversized banner of Peyton Manning on M&T Bank Stadium.

So when the Ravens’ Super Bowl-champion quarterback was told during a conference call with th Denver media Sunday morning that people here were irate about his likeness hanging in Broncos town, Flacco expressed compassion for the people.

“I think it’s all deserved,” Flacco said. “I don’t know if its deserved towards me but I happen to be the guy they put up there. I don’t think people here or anybody in our city would be too happy if we had somebody else from a different team on our stadium. I wouldn’t expect anything different but all the people in Denver to be pretty upset about it.”

I don't have a problem with the banners. I really don't.

But the whine and cheese crowd better stay their ass at home.

(And yes, I purposely used "whine")

Simple solution. When Thursday rolls around, break Flacco in half and leave his corpse on the 50 yard line.

Ok, maybe not a solution, but everyone would feel alot better. Well...except for Flacco.
