Monday morning's biggest participation headline is running back Jeremiah Johnson, who has not played in a preseason game to this point rehabbing a toe injury, back at practice. Johnson was one of two Broncos to return to drills.

The other was a late July signee, center Ryan Lilja (knee), who was out with the offensive-line group.

Former Air Force standout Ben Garland is now back with the defensive line. He trotted out to practice in a white jersey, worn by defensive players. He's bounced between the defensive and offensive lines since arriving to the Broncos in 2010.

Montee Ball has next.

The Broncos rookie running back, their second-round draft pick this year out of Wisconsin, was moved to the first team during Monday's practice. The move comes on the heels of two straight weeks of fumbles for Ronnie Hillman, who had been taking the lion's share of the first-team reps.

Broncos coach John Fox downplayed Ball's first-team reps after Monday's practice.

"It's just practice, I wouldn't read too much into anything," Fox said. "We're evaluating everybody regardless of who gets what reps at what number. So, he's a guy that we want to get some touches and we'll go from there."

Lilja will be a huge factor this season if he can get healthy. While I'm not a fan of Ramirez, he has made steady improvement. He still doesn't get the the second level like Lilja does, but he's at least become serviceable. Lilja would be a big improvement in the run game though.

Last year all the radio sports jocks were saying "what on earth does Keith Brooking add to this defense? Why is he taking up a roster spot." And all he did was start. Lilja could be the same. He's a veteran who could step in at a position where they badly need help. The problem is that Manning has been working with Manny Ramirez and any change at C would disrupt things.

So, I imagine they will give Ramirez a try. But, I have zero confidence he will do a good job.
