Not much info

We expected to see the pistol formation during Thursday night's preseason opener between the Denver Broncos and San Francisco 49ers (won by the Broncos, 10-6). We did not expect to see Peyton Manning running it.

Is the pistol formation another term for "hurry up offense"?

Pistol is just a formation...like I, single back, shotgun, five wide, etc.

The pistol formation is a variation of the shotgun formation.

In the shotgun, normally the RB(s) line up next to the QB who is 5-6 yards behind the line of scrimmage.

In the pistol, the QB lines up 3-4 yards behind the LOS, and a RB lines up 3-4 yards behind him.

It has some of the benefits for passing as the shotgun formation does, while increasing the threat of run action from the RB and/or bootlegs from the QB.

I was confused why we ran what looked like an inside zone (was it an option?) with manning.
