ENGLEWOOD, Colo. -- Sunday, a day after the club's Summer Scrimmage, the Broncos released the first official depth chart of the preseason.

The team plays its first preseason game Thursday at San Francisco.

Of note in this initial depth chart is just one rookie is currently within the top two players at his position on defense -- defensive tackle Sylvester Williams. On offense, five rookies or first-year players made the two-deep, including 2013 draft picks Montee Ball, Tavarres King and Vinston Painter. No rookies are currently slated as starters on either side of the ball.

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. -- Duke Ihenacho's improved play has been impossible to ignore — “if you're paying attention and you're not sleeping,” as Defensive Coordinator Jack Del Rio said Friday. But that doesn't mean the depth chart is going to change overnight because of performance on the practice field, despite what the rotations may look like on a day-to-day basis in practice.

“He's done some good things. Thats good. But that's just a start. Nobody should get too far ahead of themselves,” Del Rio said. “It's a long process. We haven't even begun to get into preseason games. There is a lot left to do.”

Del Rio was talking about Ihenacho, but he — or any coach — could have been talking about numerous other players, who will have to prove the degree of their progress beginning with Thursday's preseason opener at San Francisco. One of them is Julius Thomas, whose workload has expanded exponentially this summer, but sits third on the depth chart behind Joel Dreessen and Jacob Tamme.

The Broncos didn't practice Sunday, but the team released its first official depth chart since the opening of training camp.

Most, not all, of it reflected the units deployed in practice last week and in Saturday night's scrimmage at Sports Authority Field.

Ronnie Hillman was listed as the No. 1 running back, ahead of Montee Ball and Knowshon Moreno.

Manny Ramirez remained the top center on the depth chart, with newly signed Ryan Lilja officially listed behind both C.J. Davis and Steve Vallos. Lilja immediately took practice reps with the second unit after his arrival last week, though, and is expected to eventually take over as the starter.

Couple things that I noticed.

Caldwells hype in camp is real and looks like he has now taken the 4th spot, lets see what he's got in preseason.

Orange Julious isnt even 2nd TE. Reports from camp was he was amazing. If he is going to make it in the NFL he needs to takeover now.

I like that Holliday has taken both punt and kick return duties. He is more of a return specialist so might as well have him do both full time.

Why is Chris Harris 4th CB???

Yes he did.

Yes he did.

It was probably a last minute decision then by coach Fox. They must see something in this kid that we dont know yet. We know enough about Adams to know what he can do on the field but looks like we are going to see what we got in other players before we head into the regular season.

Ronnie Hillman looks fast. PFT released a report that Eddie Lacy looked incredible in the scrimmage game......hope we made the right decision in drafting Ball.

I think Moreno, J. Thomas and Harris respond well to not showing up high on the depth chart. I know Fox uses it for motivation for Moreno and Harris, and I think he could be saying the same thing to Thomas, and maybe Green.

Nice work Den!

If Julius Thomas is doing what they say he's doing in camp he's going to be find. Speaking of tight ends iirc Tamme was listed ahead of Dressen last year on the depth chart and now they have switched places. According to what I've read in the post Dressen is considered the best all round tight end we have on the roster.

Fox might use the depth chart as a motivational tool but I don't know if that's the case for everyone. I think Moreno's place on the depth chart is right where they expect him to be.

Lot of vets ahead of potential young up and coming players. Possible motivation as others have said.

and we all know Fox loves his vets. i would hope that it doesn't prevent him from making the right call.

Could be true on the motivation part. Morenos got to be so confused by now. Still think he turned it on at the end of last year and played his ass off. He never complained about shit....just did the best when given the chance. I think his work at special teams is what will help him make the team but at some point down the line Morenos # will be called on to be the starting RB, even if it's because someone else got injured. Either way, Fox knows how to use a RB and we will be passing more this year. Blocking will also be essential for our RBs.

With the injury to Dreeson, looks like Thomas will be getting alot of playing time.

I don't see why Fox on this instance use it as motivation tool given the Moreno got the message and preformed admirably. I think plan is to have him as third down back according to what I've seen written in the D.P. Make the roster as one of the top three back and there is a high probablity he could end starting because the backs ahead get injured.

I won't put much stock in this 1st time listed depth chart. It's going to change throughout preseason.

I think there will be some changes by the time regular season starts but they will be minor changes. usually 90% of the roster is already decided by the time preseason even begins.

at least thats what ted sunquist said in one of his recent articles on football educator. lol

I think the secondary is totally up for grabs. We have several quality guys back there.

Also, I think RB is another one where changes are afoot. Obviously LB too, depending on Von's situation.

Bailey and Harris are locks. The rest CB #2, SS and FS is all up for grabs. I like that Fox and Del Rio have open this up to more of a competition. DRC should win the job though. Suprised Jammer hasnt made an impact as of yet.

It sounds like only Adams might be in jeopardy in the secondary. I agree running back is not completely settled anything can happen but right now I like the order we have right now.
