Here are the changes for the new Pro Bowl!

There will be Team Captains for each side. They'll draft players like a fantasy draft. No kickoffs. Oh. Also, Jerry Rice and Deion Sanders as Captains. I assume that would change each year. Not sure. The game will be January 26 in Hawaii. 43 players on each side.

Thoughts?

Perhaps being a bit more clear with your posts would help. What are you talking about? How the Probowl is going to be run this year?

Yes. These are the changes. I guess I didn't think someone would mistake them for the changes I would want. That kind of slipped my mind. I was simply posting what's going to be different about this one, and I assume from now on.

The 2014 Pro Bowl, presented by McDonald's, will feature a new format for the NFL All-Star Game based on major changes proposed by NFLPA President Domonique Foxworth designed to make it the ultimate fan-friendly celebration of the game, the NFL and NFL Players Association announced Wednesday.

Gone is the familiar AFC vs. NFC match-up that has existed since 1971. Instead, players will be selected without regard to conference in voting by fans, coaches and players. For example, the top six quarterbacks following voting will earn distinction as All-Stars, regardless of how many are from AFC or NFC teams.

I agree. It definitely adds interest to the game. Something missing before.

The game doesnt seem to be "conventional football", but I think it'll be entertaining.

The Pro Bowl has jumped the shark. Even the title "Pro Bowler" has become virtually meaningless in recent years because they're always taking 3rd and 4th alternates.

I won't watch it.

The NFL is overhauling the Pro Bowl, eliminating the AFC-NFC format in favor of captains picking 43 players per team regardless of conference.

In addition, kickoffs will be eliminated from the game as a safety measure, one of several changes to the game. A coin toss will determine which squad gets the game's opening possession. The ball will be placed at the 25-yard line at the start of the game and after scoring plays. Since there will be no kickoffs, the kick-return specialist Pro Bowl roster spot will be replaced with an additional defensive back spot.

The loss of a kick returner Pro Bowl spot angered Oakland Raiders returner Josh Cribbs, who said in a link from his twitter page that the game was now "tainted." He followed that up with another tweet.

Herman Edwards made an interesting point today. He brought up how the NFL was recently considering removing the kickoff, and was wondering if the pro bowl is their way of test driving that idea.

In other words, its a vacation to Hawaii with an exhibition game thrown in at the end. The term "Exhibition Game" has returned.
Maybe they ought to just take the pads off and play flag...Oh well, Im sure it will be fun in any case. The last chance until summer to get your football fix, even if it is a circus

It's never going to be a serious game where players want to knock each others heads off. I'm not sure what people are looking for.

I think it would be cool to add a skills competition to the week leading up to the game.

I agree that the term has lost value. I think as far as awards and recognition goes, they should focus more on All-Pro teams instead of Pro Bowls.

I remember watching the skills competition long time ago, wasn't that during the Pro Bowl week?

I haven't watched the Pro Bowl in quite awhile.

yeah I loved the skills competition until I watched Trevor Pryce rep something like only 17 reps and this after one of his double digit sack season. It was at this point I realized just how overvalued some of these triangle numbers are in projecting ability.

I can't remember when they actually had it. It's felt like so long ago.

When they all go by normal football rules, we complain that they aren't trying hard enough. That's not going to fix itself. At least with a new format, it may make it a little more entertaining. If I wanted to watch half-assed football I'd watch the Raiders and Chiefs play each other.

Fair Point.

Didn't the Pro Bowl used to be after the Super Bowl? When it was, did Super Bowl players usually play in the Pro Bowl? I've slept since then, so I can't remember.
