Jason Kidd will meet early this week with Brooklyn Nets general manager Billy King to pitch himself as the team's next head coach, according to sources close to the process.

Kidd's meeting with King was originally scheduled as an open-ended discussion about potential employment with the Nets. But sources told ESPN.com on Sunday night that Kidd is determined to convince King that he is ready to make an immediate jump into coaching after retiring last week.

"Jason feels he's really ready to do this," one of his associates told ESPN.com.

Not that I think this has a chance of happening, but Brian Shaw might off himself if he loses out on another job, this one to someone to has never coached a game.

Jason Kidd has reached an agreement in principle to become the coach of the Brooklyn Nets, league sources told Yahoo! Sports.

A news conference to introduce Kidd in Brooklyn will happen on Thursday. Kidd's contract is expected to be guaranteed for three seasons with a possible fourth-year team option, league sources said.

Kidd, 40, will make the leap out of a Hall Fame playing career and onto the bench next season. It's a daring move for the Nets that promises to energize their fan base. Kidd is a revered figure in the franchise's wayward history, and the revelation of his candidacy has inspired the public's enthusiasm.
