Seeing Boss isn't around to start this season's thread, I guess I will.

College football started off with fireworks as we saw in another thread between a Boise St player and Oregon player. I know I'll be following some top DL draft prospects at Ala and OU and maybe a few QB prospects. Meanwhile, I love college football and am excited for the season to start.

Games to watch for me:

ALA/VT - ALA

OU/BYU - OU

LSU/WASH _ LSU

GA/OSU - GA

MD/CAL - upset special - MD

Who's going to start at QB for Georgia?

According to Rivals, some dude named Joe Cox, who has waited patiently behind Stafford. The sophomore backup, Logan Gray, played in a 7-on-7 here in Cameron about three years ago.

Oklahoma St. says no to handshake

Oklahoma State and Georgia will not be shaking hands at midfield prior to their game Saturday, in part because Cowboys coach Mike Gundy fears provoking an incident that can't be controlled.

Our first concern was [we'll] have 115 guys out there and they'll have 70, it just takes one guy to pop off. Then I don't know how you're going to break it up. How do you control something like that?

-- Oklahoma State coach Mike Gundy

"Our first concern was [we'll] have 115 guys out there and they'll have 70, it just takes one guy to pop off," Gundy said Monday at his weekly media luncheon. "Then I don't know how you're going to break it up. How do you control something like that?"

On Thursday, the school sent an e-mail saying it had decided against the handshake -- which is part of a sportsmanship initiative coming from the American Football Coaches Association -- "after much deliberation among our coaching staff."

The decision not to shake hands was thrust back into the spotlight in the aftermath of Thursday's Oregon-Boise State game, when Ducks running back LeGarrette Blount punched Boise State defensive end Bryan Hout in the face after Hout said something to Blount when the teams met at midfield after the Broncos' 19-8 win.

Blount was among the players who shook hands at midfield before the game.

"This case points out that we still need to have a commitment to sportsmanship and respect," Teaff told ESPN college football reporter Joe Schad. "It was sad as I watched, but the good news is nobody joined in. That would have been a brawl back in the day. This was one player who was frustrated and infuriated and lost control."

Teaff told Schad he understands some have and will criticize the initiative, which in part, suggested players from each team shake hands before this first weekend of games.

"I thought to myself, 'What would have happened if they hadn't shaken hands before the game?' " Teaff said. "This wasn't a fight. This wasn't a brawl. I was impressed by the coaches and players who showed restraint and self-control last night."

Teaff also addressed Gundy's decision not to have his team shake hands prior to the game.

"He believes that it would not be best for his team," Teaff said. "I hvae not spoken with him. But I've read what he said. He knows what's best for his program."

Information from ESPN college football reporter Joe Schad is included in this report.

Very excited for all weekend, even the FSU vs Miami game Monday. I just love college football.

Transition year for my New Mexico Lobos as they shift to 4-3 defense and a spread offense. Last year was hard to watch, no passing game what so ever and just was a grind to watch at times. Texas A@M today, just hope for a competitive team untill Locksley can bring in the players he needs to run his offense. (Former ILL OC)

I haven't heard of John Chavis. LSU's defense looked very soft last night especially against the run. Hopefully this is rust and not what's going to happen this season. WA gave a good fight (for what I watched) and they look to be on their way back up. It was a gut check for LSU fans though LSU is going to have a rough season against Ole Miss, Bama, and Ark and not to mention the SEC East. Miss St and Auburn are still questionable!! And for some reason, Tulane always gives LSU a tough game!

OrangeHoof
09-06-2009, 12:41 PM
That was a tougher road game for LSU than most would have thought because of the long travel involved and time zone difference. It was past bed check time for most of these Tigers by the 4th quarter.

That Tolliver kid sure looks like a stud, though.

Not many intriguing matchups this weekend, yes the overhyped USC/OSU game (which I expect USC to win).

Here's the games that catches my eye:

ND/Mich - I'm sure the top tier of the MWC conference could beat either team but the names alone make this an interesting game

Houston/Okie State - Okie State should win this easy but Houston may give them a scare

Vandy/LSU - It's at Death Valley, an evening game, usually a sure-win for the Tigers, but after watching last week's Tigers hopefully they come to this game better prepared. I'm not sure what to think of LSU right now, this may be a close game and a toss-up

U.S.C./Georgia - It would be awesome to see the Dawgs go down 0-2!!

Hawaii/WAZZU - Bandwagon fan of the Cougs for over 10 yrs now, GO COUGS!

USC/OSU - Overhyped game, USC wins, Primetime so I'll probably watch anyway!! Brent Musberger....."You are looking live at Buckeye Stadium"

imo....over all ....Ohio St. outplayed USC.....just needed one more score.....but that last drive by the freshman qb for usc.....was really something.....congrats to the trojans.
Not easy to come into the shoe and win in that atmosphere.

Correct. The smaller schools use the paycheck to fund all those Title IX programs the NCAA mandates which don't make any money and the big schools get to pad their W-L record for the pollsters and the bowl committees.

Someone I heard recently said that with all these crazy NCAA restrictions, college players get less pre-season practice time than either the pros or most high schools. They need to feed off the guppies while trying to iron out the kinks.

However, if your schedule has too many cupcakes, it can hurt you in the computer rankings that factor into the BCS at the end of the year.

My matchups of the weekend:

Boise St/Fresno St - Usually a good football game and it's tonight!

Tenn/Florida - Gators will make Lane Kiffin wish he was still with the Raiders! Use to be a good game years ago!

USC/Wash - Pac 10 football!

Utah/Oregon - Interesting Game!

SMU/WAZZU - If the Cougs lose to SMU...that'll be pathetic! GO COUGS!

UL-Lafayette/LSU - It was known as USL when I was growing up and in high school, but Tigers should be able to win easy. GO TIGERS!

Texass/Texass Tech - Hopefully Red Raiders repeat!

FSU/BYU - Interesting game!

Georgia/Ark - Should be a good matchup and game!

Meh, UGA didnt blow Arkansas out. They racked up the points but so did the Backs and that isnt a good sign for that Bulldog defense. Im not shocked by BYU's loss as they are one of those schools that just bug me going back a few years ago when they went undefeated, complained they werent in the Championship game and then got their ass kicked by Hawaii in their bowl game. True! I didn't watch the game but putting up 52 pts in anybody's backyard (especially an SEC game)is pretty damn impressive and Ark is considered a good team on offense and defense.

Both BYU and Utah were overrated this year. BYU got lucky that OU played their worst game in several years against them and Utah lost too many people to warrant such a high ranking. The Utes lost their QB, 3 starting WR's (they mostly run 4 WR sets), a key RB, 2 2nd round defensive talents (Kruger and Smith), and another all conference corner and NFL draft pick in McCain. We had a much, much better team last year and weren't ranked in the preseason and then this year we are ranked just because of what we did last year with a totally different team. Just shows the stupidity of both preseason rankings and the voters themselves...

What we've learned so far...

Miami (FL) > Florida St. > BYU > Oklahoma

LSU > Washington > USC > Ohio St.

Houston > Oklahoma St. > Georgia

Also, three of the Top 4 in the AP poll are SEC teams (Florida, Alabama, Ole Miss) and we know only one of those teams can escape undefeated.

So, the door is wide open for some darkhorse team to crash the BCS party (Boise St.?, Miami?) if Texas stumbles.

Is there any hope for my Wyoming Cowboys?

http://rivals.yahoo.com/ncaa/football/news?slug=teamreports-2009-ncaaf-wwq&prov=sportsxchange&type=team_report

************************************************** ********

If it’s good enough for Southern California and Michigan, why not Wyoming?

Both of those storied programs are going with true freshman quarterbacks, and the Cowboys are following suit, naming true freshman Austyn Carta-Samuels as their starter Saturday in their Mountain West Conference opener against UNLV (2-1) at War Memorial Stadium.

Wyoming (1-2) has scored only three points on offense in its last two games, against Big 12 schools Texas and Colorado. The field goal came as a result of a failed fake punt by the Longhorns that gave Wyoming the ball at the Texas 14.

Junior transfer Robert Benjamin started the first three games, but Carta-Samuels earned playing time in a rotation. Wyoming coach Dave Christensen said there would be no rotation Saturday.

“He was the most consistent and moved the offense,” Christensen said.

“It was kind of our plan early on to see where we’re at, try to find somebody that would step up and take charge of the position hand give us a chance to have a little consistency there. We just feel that Austyn gives us the best opportunity to do that right now.”

The Cowboys are looking to re-ignite the spark with which they came out in 2009. They played six strong quarters against Weber State and the first half against Texas but have disappeared in the last six. The Longhorns and Buffaloes combined to outscore Wyoming 52-0 in those last 90 minutes of football.

While Christensen said he feels he has the right guy behind center, he needs to see more production out of the rest of the unit.

“What we’ve got to do is we’ve got to have a lot more accountability by the surrounding guys on those units, as far as getting their jobs done, to be successful,” he said.

The task for Wyoming this week is to find a way to keep up with a prolific UNLV offense that is averaging 31 points and 412 yards per game. The Cowboys have been solid defensively but cannot be expected to completely shut down the Rebels’ spread-option attack.

NOTES, QUOTES

• The early struggles have worn on coach Dave Christensen, who admittedly doesn’t deal with losses well. “I’m very, very passionate about what I do. I’m very driven,” he told the Laramie Boomerang. “I never felt good after a loss ever in my career as a player or a coach. My kids, my family, growing up in our house, the way I think, the way I operate—you play the game, and you do things in life to win and be successful.”

• QB Austyn Carta-Samuels will become the first true freshman starter at Wyoming since Rick Costello did it in 1974. Costello set a school record that season with 21 interceptions. Carta-Samuels, who has completed 26-of-53 passes for 294 yards this season, has yet to commit a turnover.

Series History: UNLV 9, Wyoming 8 (last meeting, 2008, 22-14, UNLV).

Scouting The Offense: The Cowboys are handing the reins over to true freshman QB Austyn Carta-Samuels, but that position isn’t the only one keeping the unit from being successful. Coach Dave Christensen told the Wyoming Tribune-Eagle that the offensive line made a dozen critical errors in the shutout loss to Colorado—about four times the number of errors he wants to see. The wideouts have to create separation against a UNLV pass defense that is ranked 99th nationally.

Scouting The Defense: Wyoming already has faced Texas QB Colt McCoy, so it certainly won’t fear UNLV’s Omar Clayton. But Clayton earned MWC Offensive Player of the Week honors with his 340 passing yards and three TDs, plus another running score, in a 34-33 win over Hawaii. The Cowboys’ ends have to keep him contained to allow their linebackers to chase him down. Wyoming needs pressure because Rebels receivers Phillip Payne and Ryan Wolfe are as good as any tandem in the conference in finding seams in the defense. Safeties Shamiel Gary and Chris Prosinski better plan on staying focused longer because of Clayton’s ability to stay alive in the pocket.

Quote To Note: “I understand it’s all part of the process, but the biggest issue this program has is that I’m not a very patient person. It’s not easy for me to lose football games, especially back to back. That hasn’t happened a lot in my career. It’s not something I deal with very well. I don’t sleep at night—I constantly wake up in bed trying to figure out ways to help these kids to be successful. That’s what drives me in the profession. Losing is not acceptable by my standards. So yeah, it may be part of the process, but it still doesn’t make it any easier for me as a head football coach.”—Wyoming coach Dave Christensen, to the Laramie Boomerang.

STRATEGY AND PERSONNEL

This Week ‘S GAME: UNLV at Wyoming, Sept. 26—The series has been one of streaks. The Rebels’ victory last season in Las Vegas ended the Cowboys’ four-game winning streak. UNLV had won five straight from 1999-2003. The teams have split the series in Laramie (4-4). The last three meetings have been decided by 10 points or less.

Keys To The Game: The Cowboys have to have a quick start so they can try to establish their game plan and not be forced to play catch-up. That start may be dependent on the defense forcing a turnover to give first-time starting QB Austyn Carta-Samuels time to get acclimated. If the defense can get a score or give him a short field that helps Wyoming play with the lead, it will have a much better chance of keeping up with the offensive-minded Rebels. If the Rebels get off to a fast start, the Cowboys don’t have the personnel to expect a come-from-behind victory.

Players To Watch:

QB Austyn Carta-Samuels—The freshman will get to establish a rhythm early in the game and play with the confidence that he won’t get yanked at a moment’s notice. Wyoming needs him to be a dual-threat QB to keep the Rebels defense on its heels and create some big-play opportunities.

WR Greg Boling—Despite having only one catch last week against Colorado, he remains Wyoming’s biggest playmaker on the perimeter. His ability to stretch the field will be critical for the Cowboys to sustain drives as well as give them a chance for a quick score. Boling missed the first two games of the season because of a suspension but should be better in his second game of the season.

CBs Marcell and Tashaun Gipson—They will have a challenge this week trying to contain UNLV WRs Ryan Wolfe and Phillip Payne. They have to find ways to disrupt the receivers’ timing, which would allow the Wyoming safeties some chances to get an interception.

Well, we did start off the year by beating Weber St by 7 point. So its not like we can't beat anybody. We just don't do well against Big 12 schools. The good news is that there are no more of the school on our schedule so, hopefully we can stop getting embarrassed.

Wow Skinny! Those penalties in the redzone are killing the Gamecocks. They should be up by at least 14! Hopefully they can hold off the Rebels and take this game! GO GAMECOCKS!!The o-line was pathetic, as was the play calling after the 3rd quarter TD. It gave Ole Miss the chance to get some momentum and get back in the ball game which they were never really out of dispite how bad they were playing. Terrible coaching job by Spurrier, he was coaching not to lose and about lost.

Re: Wyoming. Watching their performance against Texas, what I saw was a spread formation run by a QB who wasn't a very accurate thrower. Just because a guy can run and throw doesn't make him a QB. He has to make reads and then put the throws on target. I didn't really see either QB doing that. As the game went along, I think Texas gained more confidence that if they blitzed the QB, he could not make them pay with completed passes.

For Wyoming to take the next step, they need to find a QB who can burn blitzing teams.

I did see a lot of heart and athleticism from the Cowboys though. They have a good coach and can be a good program if they can find a QB and keep recruiting athletes.

It was a big hit, but the bad part was, the back of his head smashed up on what looked like a lineman's knee and it shot his head forward like whiplash. He was on the ground for several minutes.

Looking at LSU's remaining schedule looks rough! Tulane and LaTech seem to be gimme's but Tulane can play LSU tough and win. I guess we'll see what they're made of against these other SEC teams because last year they didn't do very well. I guess we're finding out what kind of talent Les Miles can recruit and use instead of using Saban's recruits (which I believe the last of his recruits graduated last year)!!

Az State played the Bulldogs tough in Athens so hopefully the Tigers show up with the same intensity!!

If Tebow is out for a while, it'll be interesting to see how Florida plays without him.

That was a wild game, as you knew it would be with those two offenses. A few reviewable calls but nothing abominable.

Trivia. Want to know why Baylor and Texas Tech are in the Big XII while UH is not? A lot of money going to the university system is state-controlled due to an oil inheritance the University of Texas received a long time ago for the oil rich Permian Basin out near Midland and Odessa.

So when Texas and Texas A&M agreed to bolt the old Southwest Conference for the "Big 8", they had to get a bill passed in the state legislature to approve it. Baylor joined because the governor at the time was a Baylor grad (Ann Richards) and Texas Tech joined because the Speaker of the Texas House was a Tech grad (Billy Clayton). Schools like UH didn't have the right guy in the right place to hold the deal hostage unless their alma mater was included. True story.

LSU@Georgia - I don't have much confidence in this LSU team playing the 'good' teams of the SEC. Hopefully they surprise me but LSU gets dawg-piled in Athens. GO TIGERS!!

Oregon State/Arizona State - Should be a good matchup and high scoring game!!

Auburn/Tennessee - Auburn trying to find themselves and so is Tenn, so should be a good matchup!

USC/Cal - I'd rather watch this game, but I know they'll show the OU/Miami game:boring:

Lafayette/Yale - Figured I throw in an Ivy League game! Lafayette wins!

You mean you never turn the tv on Sat morning to one of the FSN channels and watch an Ivy league game! Big rivalries is Lehigh/Lafayette and Harvard/Yale! I don't do it that often either.:D

I wouldn't call the Bulldogs beating LSU an upset except because of their rankings. We had a discussion at work today about whether or not games are fixed. Now I've never been much of a conspiracy theorist, but part of me believes not everything is on the up and up. One thing I saw this weekend that has me wondering a bit more is the Penn State/Iowa game. Now before I go on, please note:

1-I may be FROM Pennsylvania, but I am no Penn State homer. I actually like Ohio State more since I graduated from Youngstown State, where Tressel won 4 Natl Titles.

2-I do like Iowa. Ferentz is from PA and he does his best to recruit NW PA kids...mainly from Erie.

3-All in all...ROCKY TOP BITCHES!!! The Big10 sucks.

Now back to my experience. Saturday evening, BEFORE the Penn State game, I saw a commercial on ABC touting how Sports Center was gonna discuss the 4 top 10 upsets this weekend after the Penn State/Iowa game. Peculiar. I couldn't think of the 4 top 10 teams who lost. Mississippi, Miami, Cal and ????? Oh well, no biggie, right? Someone mis-spoke. No harm, no foul. Later on we were flipping between ABC and ESPN. At this point, Penn State was up 7-0 when another ad came on on ESPN. Now a DIFFERENT announcer on a DIFFERENT network said the exact same thing about the 4 top 10 upsets. My buddy and I were racking our brains trying to determine who the 4th team was. I then told him about what I had heard earlier and his immediate response was..."Watch, I'll bet ya Penn State loses. It's fixed."

We all know what happened next. I found this to be very interesting.
