While I dont personally have to worry about state taxes, I was under the assumption this transaction would take place "under the table". Nevertheless...those of us with children and money grubbing ex-wives would actually benefit from even a simple $3000 payoff.

I don't consider it a sell out, because I consider just reaching the playoffs an opportunity, not an accomplishment. 9-7 teams just get there, .500 teams; a few years ago a LOSING team made it, even won a game. My hometown team made the playoffs SEVEN YEARS STRAIGHT, but when people talk about the great teams of the '80s and '90s their name's never mentioned.

Elite teams, the ones we remember and honor, reach Super Bowls, or at least Conference Championships. If that were on the table, maybe, but would I trade Denvers last two divisional losses for $10,000? Do I feel any better about those outcomes than all the .500 seasons without a playoff berth? Not really; all it means is worse draft picks.

I understand and respect that others feel different; I just don't share their feelings.

I think people's answers would remain the same, regardless. Mine would.

I'm not sure all would. A couple suggested that even losing team can "get to" the playoffs. However, trading 5,000.00 for a Super bowl appearance, and certainly victory...are COMPLETELY different.

Lancane
05-13-2013, 12:36 PM
$5,000 is easy enough to burn through, you could take your kids on a limited vacation, catch up some bills, go on a long awaited fishing trip, buy a used boat or car, even go on a shopping spree and buy crap for your wives in hopes of getting some play for your generosity. For most though, it would be gone far too quickly, and as Rav pointed out...there is no guarantee of a Super Bowl Championship. Now multiply that by at least double if not ten times and the answer becomes a lot clearer, go farther and say would you rather see the Broncos Win the Super Bowl or lose and you receive $50,000, most would say lose, simply because some of us have kids and other needs far more important to our everyday lives compared to our favorite past time above and beyond.

This poll is interesting to me. If for no other reason it tells us who takes a game more seriously than life. It's not my intention to insult anyone here, but how is a game more important than financial gain? Regardless of what you need it for or choose to do with it, $5,000 will impact your personal life far greater than a team winning a game.

U make a solid point. To me, I guess, watching the Broncos I'm so emotionally vested in because ive been doing it since 1st grade and have many memories with family and friends that center around it is big to me. Not to mention its the thing I look forward to most during football season because of who I gather and watch the game with, etc. So, to me, its worth more than the 5k. Keep in mind though I'm only 32, have no kids, no mortgage, no ex wives, etc. Money isn't my biggest motivating factor.

I guess I've never dealt with debt the way that some have. The only time I was ever in debt was when I bought a house. Credit cards and car loans can kiss my ass. Used cars and saving for the things I want have been my way of life. As far as cars go, I blame a lot of it on the quality they have today. I'll admit I am not proficient when it comes to my knowledge of cars and maintenance (just never really cared to learn), but I do everything I can to maintain them. It just doesnt seem like they last very long anymore. My wife has a car that is 3 years old and has been in the shop 4 times for computer problems. We're screwede when the warranty runs out

This is a good point. If I asked someone "would you take 5,000 cash in exchange for the memories of you and your family on vacation?" Would the answer be as simple? Wouldn't the "financial gain" be more important than those simple memories?

Then what's the difference? No one sits on their death bed remembering all the money they gained while at work... they remember the great times in life. Couldn't one argue that sitting down with your son/daughter..watching the Broncos win a Super Bowl be just as valuable a memory as taking that roller coaster ride while on vacation?

I actually wrote a paper about this subject. Well, my wife wrote it for me, but I read the paper and the sources. They talked about how at a certain level of income, the rise of happiness kind of plateaus. Also, the best spent money is when you use it towards something that makes memories. Such as a concert or game.

I don't think there is a big difference. SOme of the greatest memories I have looking back are those watching football (sports) with my dad. Going to a game, or simply hanging out on a porch. We went on a vacation EVERY year...and those are good, too. But its the REAL moments that you remember.

:EDIT:

AND, those great memories, until 1997, did not include Superbowl wins. You can still watch games, and enjoy those memories. Since 1998, we haven't been to the playoffs much either, so I'm guessing 90% of your "great" memories have nothing to do with playoff football.

As much as I love the Broncos...I'd take the million, would be a life changer for most of us who have to struggle day to day, month to month or year to year. I've lived through bad stretches football wise, and the fact that the Broncos would move to Los Angeles is while disappointing not permanent, after all the venue is too much of a money maker for the NFL, we'd have a new team in a matter of a few years. They may or may not be the Denver Broncos, but the Colorado Jaguars or Denver Grizzlies, maybe even a more established team, like the Denver Chargers, and yes I am being ironic. Point remains though, because the Broncos are one of the best attended teams in the NFL and remain so despite so-so, bad or winning seasons, the venue will not remain void, but a million dollars for you and your family comes but once in a lifetime for most of us.
