Here (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8bnHyZFP0jM) are (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8bnHyZFP0jM)a few videos

He comes off the edge a lot like Elvis. He takes himself out of a few plays, and looked mediocre against the run, but he looks like a really threatening pass rusher. Very quick, looks like the type that can get double digit sacks his rookie year but not too many more tackles aside from that. Between him, Ayers, and Philips, I think the coaches can adequately replace the pass rush generated by Dumervil.

He had three sacks against Alabama, all of them working against D.J. Fluker, who by the way was drafted by the Chargers in the first round. Hopefully he can do that here!

Evidently he dropped quite a bit because of an ACL injury in his senior year, but if he comes back from that, will be nice. One analysis:

"Through ten games, he was leading the nation in sacks with 12.5 before an ACL tear prematurely ended his season. His performance over those ten games was so dominating that he still finished as the FBS leader in sacks per game (1.25) and was named the 2012 Sun Belt Player of the year. It’s unlikely that Smith will be able to contribute much in 2013, but if he checks out medically he could end up one of the steals of the draft."

I really like this pick, but I hope he's the same when he gets back healthy. Watched that Arkansas State game and that poor right tackle was overwhelmed completely by Smith. He could be a real steal. He wasn't on my radar at all.

He got sacks from both sides in that game. 2 over the LT and one over the RT. One was a coverage sack. While he was good against the pass, he was completely useless against the run. Right now he looks like a pass rush specialist only. He'll need to do some serious work in the weight room to be an every down player. He does have a very very good first step though.

I agree. I'm not sure it's a problem though, I generally considered Dumervil a liability in run support. Even Von Miller is mediocre in that department. It's a natural problem when you fly up the field that fast. They've both gotten better, IMO, hopefully Smith can too

Miller is a beast vs the run.

Dumerville was mediocre vs the run, but Von Miller is NOT mediocre vs the run IMO. Nope, I just don't see mediocrity out of him at all.

Not to bad against run... His supporting cast does not help also Alabama planned there plays around him. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vWCAavZMJBY

They got flat out out coached and kept that team on there toes but if you look at the game they had a big portion doubles against him which a lot of them he got a sack off of. To his credit... KSU had no chance in contending that game. He held his own though. I personaly think he looked really good there. He guessed wrong on a big run he gave up by attempting to go inside to the gap when lacy went out... With no support does not matter how elite you are if you guess wrong.

FYI - All three sacks did come off fluker. Also, He’s the first Hilltopper drafted since around beginning of 2000 or something. Probably 3rd in last 30 years. That tells you a tad about talent around him.

* A year is a long time. If he can get healthy, stay healthy and committed... Dude can be very very good. If he is not same gets re hurt... Well no one will remember him.

Well I don't drafts this kid if he's not reasonably sure that knee isn't a big issue. Also I like what I saw out of him. From I saw he wasn't completely useless against the run. He overran some plays but be also made several plays against the run.

I thought read that he should be ready to go by the time camp roles around.

Ready in the capacity where he can learn and contribute immediately? If not, no need to waste the roster spot right away. Let him build his strength, put on weight and learn the pro game

Doom was also pretty bad against the run until last season.

Von is pretty damn good against the run. He had a ton of tackles for loss last year...

Got to like this Quanterus dude. Led the nation in sacks while missing the last two games. That film against Ark state was unreal, he was a man among boys. Plus, he had 3 sacks against an "NFL" o line in Alabama. So he could be a serious force right away. Hopefully, its the same comeback from acl surgery that we are seeing now, a la A peterson et al
Either that or he is the next Paul Toviessi, lol

I don't remember Paul Toviessi.
He came in the great draft of 2001, iirc. We took Willie Middlebrooks first then Toviessi. One of the shannahan draft debacles, he wanted Toviessi so bad that he traded up to get him

This was a smart choice, no doubt about it.

ACL is a tough injury, comparing this kid where we got him vs Tank in the 1st round.....risk/reward ratio.....very good drafting.

What makes it all work in the long term is Phillips, a guy that wants to get here and learn the playbook vs Freeney who does not have learning the playbook as a priority.

Keep the reps down, let him heal and learn.....good long term vision by the Broncos.

I agree, even if he needs the Pup it's a solid gamble at a spot in the draft that makes sense. Toviessi was a 2nd round pick with a degenerative knee, I guess they traded up to get him, they traded down before taking a chance on Smith in the 5th.

It's a solid move.

I love the play on that video where they are going to throw back to the QB and he sniffs it out and stays with the QB forcing the RB to eat the ball. That play shows some Football smarts outside of just rushing the passer.

That Jonathan Dowling looks like a Pro prospect too.
