You can see that Dum was a lot to Von.

I've yet to hear Von talk and NOT like anything he's said.

I like Miller as much as I like alots, but asking him about Manning is like asking Clady about Champ. It's not like they play/practice with or face each other much; when Manning's on the field Miller's doing the same thing as the rest of us: Watching. From much closer, sure, and he's there for every practice, but I'm be more interested in what other top blitzers said about Manning (if I could trust them to be candid.)

Of course you'd say something like that.

As Miller himself noted in the interview, he's not allowed to "get too close" even when practicing against Manning. What's he going to tell us about what Manning brings apart from swagger and professionalism? This whole business of debating posters personalities rather than discussing football gets really old really fast, man. I'm more interested in what Miller learned from Doom than from Manning, both on and OFF the field.

Really? You took the "not allowed to get too close" as to mean what, he's not allowed to know him? He's making a joke about not getting close to HITTING him on the practice field during live drills.

Its pretty absurd to think that Manning and Von don't talk, interact, communicate, joke, laugh, talk about football and debate. They are on the same team, and there are only 50+ players there. That is NOT that many people in a room, not to mention training facility, practice field, and locker room.

I feel pretty confident that Von feels/sees EXACTLY what Manning brings to the field and to the team. He knows what he' slaying against, and can learn from his own mistakes as I'm sure Manning is very happy to give him advice as to what "tips" Von may be giving away when he's about to blitz from the outside.

Let go of the darkside Joel..it's clouding your thoughts.

That's exactly how I took it, but how much do you think a sack specialist learns practicing against a QB he can't sack? Like I say, it's like asking what Clady's learned from Champ. Ask a receiver, or lineman, or back, or corner, or safety what Manning's taught them, not a guy who's not allowed to do the thing he does best against Manning.

As I said, I'm sure Miller appreciates the leadership and confidence Manning brings as much as anyone does: I just don't see how he could've acquired or honed any skills from them.

Not about me, man, really. The days when I was foolish enough to let online discussion get personal are mercifully long gone.

I am sure Von sees many things in Peyton - how Peyton prepares, what a professional he is, how Peyton feels the little things in regards to football are important, how Peyton is a leader, etc., etc., etc. That is all part of a football team.

Agreed. I just doubt any of those things help Miller beat blocks, get to QBs, cut down runners or cover receivers.

And? I still don't see your point. So you are saying that the interviewer can't see/get Von's perspective on ALL the things that Manning brings to the team BECAUSE Von isn't learning "skill moves" at his position from Peyton? Your complaint is that the interview shouldn't really be asking Von about Manning, beacuse Manning isn't specifically teaching him about being an OLB..... even though the interviewer wasn't really asking about Manning and how he "teaches" Von. His question was what Manning brings to the TEAM....which is something that Von VERY MUCH can do. Hell, he can even compare the magnitude of difference between what Manning brings as a QB compared to Tebow. But then, I think you know that.

Joel, Manning is an asset to Von Miller because Manning has been great at manipulating defenses. You don't think Von Miller can glean a lot of tactics, or strategy from a mind like Manning's?

Which Von did mention in the interview. EVERY defensive player is learning from playing against Manning every day. But then, I guess since Peyton can't teach the "swim move"...they aren't REALLY learning anything.

Yeah. Manning can't teach VM how to beat a double team, but he can teach him how to read an offense. Specifically, he can teach him a lot about the line of scrimmage mind games. In particular, audibles and formation changes. Von Miller is a guy who gets schemed against, so this information is going to be especially valuable to VM.

In support of this argument, I'd cite Manning asking Porter how he knew where Manning's pass was going in the SB. Those two exchanged information about the play and other football strategy. IIRC, Manning said something to the effect of 'if you tell me how you knew to jump that route, I'll tell you how I knew to change the route to a go-route," or something like that.

Football requires more strategy than any other major sport in America. Manning is one of, if not the, most cerebral QB's ever. Of course he can improve VM's game.

I was thinking about that interview with Porter when I was thinking that Manning COULD give hints to Von as to the kinds of "tips" he could be giving away when he plans to blitz.

Right, Miller's as qualified as anyone to speak on that kind of "influence," but I took it, perhaps wrongly, as "how has Manning made you and your teammates better?" I don't think he can answer that nearly as well.

Joel have you ever told a joke?
Sure, but that joke, like most, was based on a big kernel of truth.

That's a fair point I hadn't considered, yeah, though I'm still dubious how large the impact would be relative to what Clady or Doom taught Miller. He DID have a pick six against the Bucs last year, and that could've been because Freeman expected him to blitz instead of cover (on the other hand, it could also have been due to Freeman sucking.)

Wait.. so now you think Miller is lying when he says he learned things from Doom as well? And you don't think that practicing against a top LT can improve your game? Weird, considering how many times WRs will state that going against top corners helps them, or vice versa. So a LB can ONLY learn things from..... what... the position coach? There is so much to football, that it surprises me how large your blinders are. They seem to be blocking the view on just how much more there is to the game than just the simplicity at which you are trying to make it.

How does speculating Miller learned more from Doom and Clady equal saying he learned nothing from either and lied about it? Do ya'll actually read my posts, or just look for key words then say, "you're wrong"?

I didn't skip what you read, but I do admit to MIS-reading what you posted.

That being said, I think it's a pretty lame comment either way. "DUBIOUS as to the impact RELATIVE to Doom and Clady"... is pretty silly considering he wasn't even ASKED that question.

So although I do admit to missing the "in relative" in your previous post, I still think your complaints on this are ridiculous and you are simply doing your absolute best to try and just be an ass about it. But hey, to which their own...right?

I'm not the one disputing posts based on author rather than contents. My whole point was asking how Doom and Clady "influenced" Miller would've made more sense than asking how Manning did (enough so that, as you noted, he volunteered to comment on what he got from Doom.) Asking about Manning strikes me more as "Star #2, what do you think of Star #1?" fluff than actual sports journalism, but it's not my show.
