Nice overview, if worrisome; we don't have many guys under contracts beyond this year, and precious few beyond 2014, but have a huge monetary committment to Manning both. I'd hate to see us in the same boat as the Ravens next year: A Super Bowl winner entirely dismantled by free agency and age. The only thing I'd hate more is seeing us in that boat WITHOUT another Super Bowl win. How does our '14 cap look?

Here are our Notable Free agents this time next year:

Robert Ayers
Ryan Clady
Wesley Woodyard
Tony Carter
Britton Colquitt
Eric Decker
Chris Harris
Trindon Holliday
Mike Adams
Zane Beadles
JD Walton

(full list here) http://www.spotrac.com/free-agents/nfl/2014/denver-broncos/

According to Spotrac, all of the guys still under contract add up to $100M next year. So that gives us 20 odd space (depending on exact CAP), plus any rollover, plus anyone we cut before then (e.g. Joe Mays?) with which to resign who we want.

Chris Harris is a restricted free agent, the only concern in 2014 is whether or not you can extend him. Considering Clady will take half of the currently available space I think Decker, Woodyard and either Beadles or Walton should be considered likely to extend.

Here's hoping it's just Harris, Decker and Woodyard along with Demaryious Thomas and Clady.

Even when Peyton retires, reality dictates someone ekse of significance will have to go. That's pretty much tge purpose of the cap...to prevent empires

I'll drink to the departure of Walton, and Beadles, too unless he improves as much as last year. However, I think Ayers is a good LDE unless asked to be the RDE he can't be, like Carter as a cheap and mostly solid nickelback, definitely like Colquitt as a punter and don't want to part with Holliday after he returned 4 kicks for TDs last year (half of them in a playoff game.) Still, $10 million doesn't give us a lot of flexibility. If I understood all this right, our cap hit for releasing Mays next year would be negligible, but free up about $4 million we could spend on Colquitt, Holliday and/or Ayers, so hopefully we're all over that.

I can't help wondering if the problem's self-correcting, if Champ and Manning retire together. I suspect much depends on if/when we manage a Super Bowl trip, but note Champ's not under contract after 2014 either.

It's likely to be one of the receivers, I think.

Looking at guys who are looking at big pay days, you have Clady, Miller, D. Thomas. If one needs to be let go because we can't afford him, I see it being Thomas.

But if you look at that list, Denver has a LOT of flexibility after next year AND after 2014. I think Elway and company have done an excellent job cap-wise.
