I had a couple of damn good IPA's this weekend that I somehow missed in my prior travels. The first is Lewis and Clark Brewing Tumbleweed IPA, had it in a lounge and it was awesome but I couldn't find it in the stores later, too bad because I would have bought a couple cases.
http://greatbrewers.com/sites/default/files/images/TumbleweedCan.preview.jpg

The second was Madison River Brewing Hop Juice... It's a double IPA, 9% and about 100 IBU. Really good as well and bought a couple six packs to take home. I also like this companies Salmon Fly Honey Rye, it's pretty tasty and you can drink quite a few of them without realizing.

Hop Juice? I wonder if Left Coast knows someone took their beer name.

I drank two of those Breck '72 Imperial chocolate cream stout. It was a really good, really complex stout. The chocolate was subtle. It was a little on the watery side and less on the cream side. I'd buy it again if it wasn't $15 for a four pack.

No, its not on that list. It's a seasonal ipa from Deschuttes. It's only available in 22oz bottles. Its not an imperial ipa, but it kind of tastes like one. It's 9%abv. You should be able to find it in Denver.

As for the Hop Juice name, thats a good question but who knows, the two breweries opened about the same time.

The hop alpha acids degrade over time. Could have just been an old batch with no real malt profile.

I've seen Bohemia Obscura (dark) the Bohemia Clara (kind of in between a XX Lager and XX amber) and the Bohemia Trigo (wheat) and I'd say they're probably the best mexican beer makers.

I like the Obscura the best. The wheat is pretty similar to a Blue Moon. Not bad at all, , but probably not up to these guys' standards.

The guy that gave it to me said he got a really good spice in his throat after drinking it. I'm not a HUGE fan of chili or pepper infused beer but hopefully this one is good. I've only had a couple to go off of and one of them was the Sam Adams Vixen, which is a chocolate chili bock and it was just ok.

Odell Woodcut #6...real good brew. Has almost a sweet smell, but not an overly sweet taste. I liked it better a little warmer. The oak, vanilla, and smoke notes really popped with it warmer, is did the boozy taste toward the end. Really nice beer and I really dig the mosaic hops.

Foothills Brewing Company's People's Porter. Solid English Porter, I think this one would be better from a tap vs the bottle that I got. It hinted at being really really solid but was a little lacking.

Laughing Dog Rocket Dog Rye IPA. I really liked this one. Not very hoppy but the citrus and rye really came through. Solid IPA

I am still staying away from that stuff. Years ago I use to really enjoy Knob Creek bourbon. Two of my brother in laws were mixing Coke and bourbon over the Thanksgiving holiday, but I just decided to stay away from it. I had good beer with me anyway. I find that I like something in just about every style except watered down domestics. Just something about beer that tastes like club soda with a hint of hops that isn't that appealing to me.

I think it's probably because IMO IPA is probably the most versatile brew out there. I love me some hop monsters, but a good barleywine or stout is just as good to me. I love a good brown and an occasional fruited brew like Friek.

Here is a failry unknown brewery you guys should check out.

http://www.beervalleybrewing.com/index.shtml

They make my favorite Imperial Stout. They aren't anywhere east of Idaho. However Red, they are available in AZ. I know you said you travel down there from time to time. I think you'd really like their Leafer Madness Imperial Pale Ale. Weazel, the imperial stout is avaiable in Sandpoint, Post Falls, and Spokane. If you guys get a chance to try those beers you won't regret it. They're not cheap, but they're worth trying at least once. The Leafer Madness goes for about $7 a bomber, and the Imperial Stout goes for about $9 a bomber. It doesn't take much though, the Imperial Stout is 11%, and the Leafer Madness is 9%.

Their website isn't the greatest, because they're still a pretty small operation. I think I might go check out their brewery sometime. They're about 45 minutes from here.

I've never had a real hoppy one at all. Just a general ale but it has that smokey depth to it like scotch does. Scotch gets it's earthy, smokey flavor from being kettled over a peat moss fire, I am not sure how they get that taste into a brew but I really enjoy them.

You can actually take a home brew that didn't turn out the way you wanted it and make it into scotch, there's a local guy here that does it.

It not a heavy handed as Stout or Porter but it has similar flavor profiles. Though it say it only 7.5 ACL it hits like a 9.0 brew. It only brew once a year in limited batches, so if you see it pick it up.

pretty sure i had that atwater porter years ago, when i was back in ohio. . . if it is the same one, i don't remember it being anything special. . . lemme know what ya think. . . sante fe has also been kinda uninspiring to me. . .

i actually bought a six of red chair tonight-- first time i've seen it this year, and i always think how hurt and ashamed al would be if he knew i passed over his baby. . .

Lol, you gotta admit it's a pretty good pale ale. The reason you haven't seen it is because it's only available January through May.Obsidian Stout and Black Flag Imperial Stout would be my babies these days.

Im trying two new ones tonight. Laughing Dog imperial ipa and Black Bear Imperial Stout.

New Glarus stone soup.

This is a beautiful Abby ale. As it's cold right now, I'm only getting the nose and malt. Going to let it warm to open up a bit. Going to have to pick up more of this before I leave the dells

I thought this was friggin awesome:

http://blogs.denverpost.com/beer/2014/01/14/left-hand-brewing-calls-audible-on-peyton-mannings-bud-light/12870/

Peyton Manning’s postgame beverage of choice, Bud Light, has received a good-natured penalty flag from the clever folks at Left Hand Brewing.

After Manning professed his desire for the macrobrew in a post-game interview upon beating the Chargers, the folks at the Longmont independent craft brewery delivered a care package to Sports Authority Field at Mile High: three cases of Left Hand beer and a polite note explaining the “audible” and wishing the quarterback good luck in the AFC Championship.

Manning knows his shit. Bud Light is the official beer sponsor of the NFL. I'm sure that's the only reason he used them - loved it though. The whole reporter room was cracking up.

The Nitro milk stout is a helluva a brew. It's a shame we don't get that in Rapid City. I was talking to the owner of the beer store last time he was in there and he said they're working on getting Left Hand here. They distribute to Minnesota, so they travel on I-90 right through Rapid City all the way across the state...just a matter of working out the logistics I guess.

No but I'll look for it. I have a bottle of Thomas Creek Up the Creek IPA that I've been saving to get to you, I absolutely loved Pliney the Elder when I brewed it (I think I still have a bottle of that left for you), and found a funky IPA that is top notch in my book. I have to remember what it's called though.

That's what I love about barley wines and double IPAs. I love hops, but my palette needs some malt profile to counter balance or else it just destroys me.

I've tried the Union Jack, which I thought was decent, but I don't think I've had the double jack. I've also had their oatmeal stout, which was good. They also have a top shelf oak barrel stout that I tried last summer. It was pretty good.

Union Jack is probably one of the better IPA's on the market. Double Jack is obviously just the Double IPA version and very good as well. They actually just announced label changes, so hopefully they live up to your standards more. LOL
