i feel your pain, but everything in life is a tradeoff-- for example, i bet you're not getting freezing rain right now. . .
You're right. It's been 85 and sunny for two months straight. I quit posting in the 'How's your weather thread'
I should have filled half the back of my Toyota with beer before I drove down.

The cervesa here isn't good. It's extremely limited.
I was lucky enough to find some Grolsch the other day at the store. Not the best, but a nice change. I find myself getting tired of Mexican beer.
I miss New Belgium beers, Boulder beers, Red Hook, Shiner Bock, Sierra Nevadas, Hazed and Infused. I hate you all.
Sierra Nevada Pale Ale I CAN get, and its mighty fine. The dive next to my office building has it on tap. I'll think of you next time I'm there!
I bought a sixxer of Blue Moon's Full Moon "Winter Abbey Ale" a couple nights back...saw it in the cooler at Wal Mart and picked it up. I was pleasantly surprised because the last Blue Moon seasonal I tried was their Harvest Moon pumpkin ale and I didn't like it much at all. The Full Moon went well with my Sirloin that I marinated in Coke, Beer, A1, Sweet Baby Ray's honey BBQ sauce, Italian dressing, and Mustard.

...New York state microbrewers! Free samples, and all 'on the clock". Man, we make good beer in NY! IPA's! Belgian Blondes! Hefelweizens!
I'm home now, and My wife is mad, she says I've drunk too much :D
Recommendation - If you get a chance to try Saranac Imperial Pale Ale do so. Man, I'm in a good mood! :elefant:

Tomorrow I'll draft a bill to fix the flaw in the State ABC Law (Alcohol Beverage Control) that these guys want. I would have done it anyway. \
P.S. Dogfish, the brewers I talked to knew all about Bell's Hop Blast, and spoke of it wth reverence. A goofy quirk in NYS ABC law prevents it from being sold here. I intend to fix that :D

We don't do anything like that at the company I work for now. Closest thing we have is when we get to the point where we can't stand the company bullshit any longer, a large group of us will go out and drink margaritas until we are all plowed.

Paulaner Salvator dopple bock...
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/f/f4/Beer-Paulaner-Salvator-Doppelbock.jpg/450px-Beer-Paulaner-Salvator-Doppelbock.jpg
Paid 2.89 for a 1 pint bottle at Fred Meyer.
I'm not really familiar with the dopple bock style as I rarely drink them but as I was standing in the beer aisle, my curiosity lead me from my usual suspects to something more mysterious...
Poured a mahogany color (Much darker than the picture here) but still very clear with very little head and no lacing at all...Very earthy smelling with subtle hints of sweetness...should be interesting..
Taste was exceptional...wow! I wasn't expecting this, raisins, caramel, and nuts almost in the tradition of a nut brown ale but not as prevalent. A somewhat smoky flavor which I presume is from some roasted malts in there and plenty of crystal malt to lend sweetness. Moderately complex and subtle bitterness from the hops but well balanced...very tasty!
This brew has a very light body despite it's dark color which makes it easily drinkable. Not a bruiser by any means at 8% abv but a few of these could sneak up on you due to it's drinkability.
My initial reaction was "why didn't I buy more of these..?".... I highly recommend this brew if it's in your area. I know I'll be picking up a few more in the near future.

I actually had the Springboard recently and was kind of disappointed. I guess I just didn't care much for the spices in it. I definitely prefer Fat Tire, but I'm looking to try some other beers from that brewery, specifically their 1554.
My beer of the moment is Abita Turbodog, probably my favorite of the domestics I've had to date.

good call-- of the ones i've had, i think 1554 is probably their best brew. . . you should try the tripel and the abbey ale as well. . . their biere de mars seasonal is another good one, and their blue paddle is one of the best pilsners i've had. . .
i've you're interested in american "belgian style" beers, i can recommend some others as well. . . angry monk by redfish brewery, and pretty much anything by new holland brewing company or brewery ommegang-- especially their three philosophers, which is spiced ale blended with lambic, or their chocolate indulgence. . . but IMO, by far the best american belgian style beers are brewed by avery-- they're a brewery in boulder, one of my two favorites. . . their reverend is an exceptional quadrupel style, and the beast (which i'm sure i've mentioned to you before) is a grand cru, possibly the most intense beer i've ever drank. . .

And yeah, you've told me about the The Beast. Unfortunately I haven't seen it in this area and would probably have to order it to get it at all. My next buy will probably be either the 1554, as mentioned, or Abita's Fleur-de-lis Restoration Ale, which I've had my eye on for awhile. Given the dense pile of work I have to do over the next week and a half though, I don't think I'll be drinking much of anything in the near future.

Something that isnt too bad is Cola-Wiezen. Dont knock it until you rock it.
I've got a delicate beer-related balancing act that I thought I'd present to the beer thread for consideration. I'll be hosting a pre-party for members of my copy editing staff this Friday. I expect the turnout will be a dozen or fewer, so a case should be plenty in addition to the liquor that I'll ask the other editors to bring. The desk as a whole is roughy two-thirds female, if that makes any difference. The beer chosen needs to be:
1) Available in cases in northern Chicagoland. I'm on a budget, and I won't be buying that much beer in individual six-packs if I can't expect to drink all of them.
2) At or below 5% ABV, with a little margin for error. The last thing I need is for people who aren't used to stronger beers to get ahead of themselves.
3) Not Corona, Heineken, any of your entry-level American macrobrews, or anything comparable. My staff did a great job this quarter, they deserve better.
4) Accessible. Stouts, porters, and the hoppier pale ales are probably not good choices, as I think I'm the only one in the group who tries these on a regular basis. Lagers, witbiers, and possibly blonde or milder pale ales are likely to be more to the taste of this crowd.
Current candidates include Harp, Smithwick's (one of my fellow editors loves this beer), Dos Equis, Goose Island 312, Blue Moon (slightly outside the ABV range but a local favorite), Samuel Adams Boston Lager, and maybe Fat Tire (though I'm not sure how accessible it is compared to the others and it's marginally outside my preferred ABV range).
To summarize, I'm looking for a beer that I can buy in reasonable quantity, that people can drink at my place without having a problem continuing their drinking somewhere else later on that night, and that people will enjoy and appreciate as better than the usual even if they haven't had any exposure to great beers.
Thoughts?
i would see if you can find new belgium's blue paddle pilsner. . . it's light in complexion and very drinkable-- it's not going to be considered extreme, even by the beer novice-- but IMO is far better than old standbys like heineken and corona. . . also, i don't know if great lakes beers are available as far west as chicago, but i'm betting that they probably are-- if so, i would highly recommend their burning river pale ale. . . it's moderately more hoppy than your garden variety pale, but not so much so as to be offensive to an inexperienced palate. . . . it's extremely citrusy, and just plain good. . . .
if you want a lager, grolsch might be a bit more adventuresome than heinny. . . i'm not sure about it's ABV, but hoegarrden (sp?) is a nice, smooth belgian-style white ale (brewed from wheat). . . .
and if you're buying sixers, there's no reason you can't get a variety instead of four of the same. . . .
Well, buying four separate sixers on my student budget is exactly what I'm hoping to avoid, especially since I'll also be buying some liquor and be expected to contribute to the main party fund. I don't want to be cheap, mind you, but all that starts to add up! Two different twelve-packs might be an option.
I've seen the Great Lakes beers even in stores with limited selections here, so I'll look out for that pale ale, as well as for the Blue Paddle and Grolsch. Hoegaarden I've had on several occasions and enjoyed, but it may be limited to sixers here.

is odell out there in chicagoland?
i don't think you can go wrong with easy street.
or one of my favorites, Levity from Odell.
i don't know how to describe beer, so i copied this:
Modest body, full malt palate … light and delicate. Smooth mouth feel with a light carbonation after a judicious pour. Bitterness from hops are straight forward and cut through at bit and clean things up. Sweet malt up front with a lingering light toasted and caramel flavour the stretches even to the finish. Pear like fruitiness mingles with the spicy herbal hop flavour. Hops and malt go hand in hand into a long lasting finish.
i don't know if they have cases... might only be available in six packs, but it's delicious, accessible, and right at 5% abv

Personally I am more of a wine guy and even though I am not the get drunk kind I can always appreciate a good beer. The best one I had was from a smaller brewer in Germany. It doesn't export the beer, but that was a very good beer.

that's insane. mine is a little over a year in the making, but i must inform you that i'm a poor college student and mostly drink canned beer. mine started as a collection of a few caps so that we could play 'caps' the drinking game whenever we wanted to, and at some point i found a bag and just kept em all...

my brother is a bud light drinker. he buys more often then i do... (^^ i'm broke!) and he always gets a 20 pack of bl and a 12 pack of good beer... plus, i ONLY save caps that are pristine, and a lot of my friends really suck at getting a pop-top off without fukking up the cap, so the twist-offs all get saved...
That would make a great table top if you enclose it in some resin. Great for the game room.
that's what i was thinking... a friend of mine has a coffee table made of caps she got from a brewery and resin and it looks great. i have enough for a coffee table, but my ultimate goal is a beerpong table... it'll be a little while longer!

My palette is still in training, but I have this to offer to the beer thread:
http://www.millstreambrewing.com/images/stoutlabel.jpghttp://www.millstreambrewing.com/images/stoutglass.jpg
Colony Oatmeal Stout used to be just a winter seasonal brew when it first was introduced back in 1996. But since then popular demand has made it into an all year affair. The 'oatmeal' in the name is due the 10% oatmeal in the the grist of this brew. Oats give beer a real thick mouthfeel, something definitely desirable in a stout! But the real secret is in our lager yeast. Most stouts are made using ale yeast, but we wanted ours to be a smooth as our lagers! Black malt and roasted barley give the beer its color, and coffee-like flavors. If you like thick full-bodied stout, this beer is for you! We now only make the Stout in the colder months, because that is when it is the most popular. In the winter, you'll find it in stores in its own 'stout' packaging.

And was intrigued enough to also try their Hefewiezen....on tap, no less. This was one old school, authentic European style pub.
These are sweeter and served warmer than the brews with the same name typically found in the U.S.

I think it was a little too cold when I started drinking it. I think it has warmed up to about 50 degrees right now, and I am beginning to enjoy the depth of the beer. a lot of the darker beers are best served at cellar temperature (which i believe is around 54, not sure exactly)-- you can taste the malt flavors better when it's not quite as cold. . .

mojo risin' double IPA by boulder beer
i love this stuff for two reasons-- because it's name derives from one of the doors' best songs, and even more because it kicks ass. . . an extremely dry IPA with just a hint of skunkiness. . . drier than the desert. . . solid but not overwhelming hop punch (the label says they use amarillo hops)with distinct citrus notes, and just a touch of spice in the finish. . . very subtle underlying sweetness--almost a raisiny flavor in the aftertaste. . . the beer is 10% ABV, but the hops definitely dominate the barley in this one. . . overall, quite a pleasant offering of my favorite style of brew. . . did i mention how dry it is? always leaves me thirsty for another one. . .

Never did get back to this thread with the results of my party... opted for just the Blue Moon and it was a hit.
Tried a nice diverse group of new beers Wednesday and Thursday... the Young's Chocolate Stout, Franziskaner Weiss, Czechvar, and Boddington's Pub Ale. All pretty good. The Czechvar was better than most of the other pilseners I've had, maybe all of them.

few things beat walking into the store and finding out that your favorite brewery has a new offering, so i was pretty happy to see dogfish head's new limited edition, palo santo marron. . . this is the description on the label:
An unfiltered, unfettered, unprecedented brown ale aged in handmade wooden brewing vessels. The caramel and vanilla complexity unique to this ale comes from the exotic Paraguyan Palo Santo wood from which these tanks were crafted. At 10,000 gallons each, these are the largest wooden brewing vessels built in America since before Prohibition. It's all very exciting. We have wood. Now you do too.
an exceptionally big ale, this is a brown only by the very loosest definition of the term. . . so dark and thick it makes any porter i've ever had look like a punk in comparison, and it packs a pretty good whallop at 12% ABV. . . a serious sipper that it's almost impossible to chug. . . the previously mentioned caramel and vanilla notes float on a bath of smokey, almost ashy wood flavor and mocha bitterness. . . at first i thought it was similar to their indian brown ale, but the hops are very muted in this one, and it leaves a rich, lingering aftertaste. . . a very good ale that you wouldn't want to drink every day-- and probably couldn't afford to unless you're independently wealthy. . . excellent addition to their line, though. . .

Just tried a Breckenridge Avalanche Ale, one of a make-your-own six pack I put together at World Market. It's not exactly bad, but I can't say I prefer it to the very similar Fat Tire. A little too coppery-smelling, and a bit of a weird balance between the flavors.

yes, i recommend getting lots of it. . . .
the 60 minute IPA is one of their standards-- still very good, but less extreme than some of their other brews, and a solid introduction. . . the 90 minute IPA is a classic, but IMO the barley overwhelms the hops a little, leaving it less hoppy than it'd prefer for a big IPA. . . the 120 minute IPA is ungodly expensive, but one of my all-time favorites-- it's a whopping 120+ IBUs and 23% ABV, making it one of the biggest beers ever brewed. . . the indian brown is IMO the best brown ale on the planet-- that one is the beer that first made me fall in love with dogfish head. . .
the worldwide stout is another ridiculously strong, expensive, over-the-top brew that i would highly recommend if you're big on stouts. . . and the new limited edition, the palo santo marron that i mentioned a few posts back, is very interesting. . .

I think it may be somewhat acquired. I've always liked Pale Ales, but at first a few of the IPA's seemed a bit over the top. As time went by, I found I really liked them more and more, the hoppier the better.
You don't get bonus points for drinking IPA's though - there's no moral component! If you like Lagers, Stouts, Weissbiers, what have you, its all good. Myself I don't like Stouts and Porters even a little bit, so I don't drink them.

i don't know how or why, but i just started liking them at some point. . . and now no other beers even comes close, and they don't make such as thing as a beer that's too bitter. . .
I am still at that stage where I am aquiring a taste for IPAs. Every once in a while, I just feel like I need an IPA.

Never did drink that 90 Minute IPA... it's still sitting in my fridge. I'll drink it tomorrow night as part of my preparation for going out. Two birds with one stone, y'know.
The 90 Minute IPA was outstanding. Knowing nothing about the beer except what I knew of 'fish's tastes, I kind of expected to be overwhelmed with hops, but that wasn't the case at all; it's a very well-balanced IPA. I've probably mentioned before that this isn't nearly my favorite style of beer, but I'll definitely drink this one again.

definitely one of the better scottish ales that i've had, although the style generally isn't among my favorites. . . i don't know what it is exactly, they have a distinctive flavor that i'm just not that fond of. . . probably has something to do with the grains they use. . . and i know some scottish ales are made with peat moss, which is kinda funky-- skullsplitter is a good example. . .
i used to drink the belhaven back when i was in college. . . it's been a while, but i remember it being smooth and creamy, without too much bite. . . have you ever had wexford's irish cream ale? if not, keep an eye out for it. . . .

Can't recall having seen Wexford's anywhere. Not even EV1, which has by far the widest selection of beers in town. I might have to hope that that one shows up on some bar's spring beer list. Seems that when I lived in Ireland, I missed out on a lot by being ten years old.
Tonight's beer for the basketball championship (he's heating up!) was Ommegang Abbey Ale, which once again I really enjoyed. It's been a while since I've had Chimay Rouge or Westmalle Dubbel, but the Ommegang didn't seem markedly inferior to either of them. I'll probably buy it again in the future as a cost-effective alternative to the true Belgian dubbels. Bought a four-pack to share during the game... one to me, one to my friend and fellow beer explorer (who loved it), one to a girl who said that it wasn't bad but kind of reminded her of Worcestershire sauce (seriously?), and the remaining beer returned to my fridge for a later date.
I remember dogfish recommending me some other specific beers from this brewery, but unfortunately I've yet to see those on offer. If they're anywhere near as well done as this one, I look forward to trying them.

got a couple of those in the fridge myself. . . the other one i recommended was probably three philosophers-- it's a lambic blended with some other type of belgian-style ale (can't remember exactly what off the top of my head). . . makes a nice, light brew. . .
Thread search says that the other one you recommended specifically was their Chocolate Indulgence. I know I've enjoyed the chocolate stouts I've tried, and I have to think I'd get at least as much enjoyment out of a chocolate Belgian ale.

Dear dogfish,
I am feeling particularly lazy so I ask you instead of attempting to look it up: What is the general difference between a hefeweizen and other wheat beers? Tonight, a friend of mine and I realized that while he likes hefes, I dislike almost all of them and he can't drink wheat beers but I rather like them. We have similar taste in beer otherwise, so it struck us as somewhat odd.
Also, I would gladly accept any of your recommendations. :D

Hefeweizen is a German style of wheat beer in which the yeast is not filtered out. Though Kristallweizen (clear), Dunkelweizen (dark), and Weizenstarkbier or Weizenbock (higher alcohol content) varieties are available, they are not considered true hefeweizen unless left unfiltered. The filtration which takes the yeast out of Kristallweizen also strips the wheat proteins which make Hefeweizen cloudy.
Alternate terms for Hefeweizen include: Hefeweißbier, sometimes Weißbier, Hefeweiße, Weizenstarkbier (not necessarily a Hefeweizen unless left unfiltered)
The Hefeweizen style is particularly noted for its low hop bitterness (about 15 IBUs) and relatively high carbonation (approaching four atmospheres), considered important to balance the beer's relatively malty sweetness.
Another balancing flavour note unique to hefeweizen beer is its phenolic character; its signature phenol is 4-vinyl guaiacol, a metabolite of ferulic acid, the result of fermentation by ale yeast appropriate for the style. Hefeweizen's phenolic character has been described as "clove" and "medicinal" ("Band-aid") but also smoky. Other more typical but less assertive ale flavour notes include "banana" (amyl acetate) and sometimes "vanilla" (vanillin).
Some prominent commercial examples of Hefeweizen are produced by Paulaner, Erdinger, Schneider Weisse (original amber only), Franziskaner, Rothaus, Hacker-Pschorr, Ayinger (Bräu Weisse) and Weihenstephan. The style is nowadays drunk throughout Germany, but is especially popular in its Southern German homeland.

I have to say here that I am flat stunned that there is a 'genre' of beer you aren't an expert on. I seem to be liking wheat beers at the moment but I haven't had a large variety of them. A Scotch Ale is simply feremented in the same manner as regular Scotch, using smoked malts. Hence a beer with the name "Cold Smoke".
Sam Adams makes a REALLY nice Scotch Ale.
They also make a Weizen (wheat beer), but I'm not a big fan of weizens. They are a very hoppy beer and I usually just get a bloated feeling after a few of them, followed by 2 days of gas.

There are two basic types. A Hefeweizen, which is a regular wheat beer and a Dunkelweizen, which is a darl wheat beer. It does have a higher "dosage" of yeast in it that you can typically see floating on the bottom...especially in home brewed versions. However, if a good beer is drank the way it's suppose to be...out of a glass...this will stir the yeast and add the flavor to the entire beer.

Witbier means "white beer". It's a very pale beer in color. It has all the sediment that a wheat beer has and is very hoppy and is high in carbon dioxide.
The main difference between the two is that a witbeer has more spices in it. Orage peel, etc.

Hazy, honey golden hue with aromas of honey and earthy hops. Nice malt sweetness and subtle fruit and mineral notes on the palate balanced by refreshing bitterness. A solid English quaffer.
I was at Sam's Club last weekend and picked up a case of Leinenkugel's veriety Weiss and wheat beers. It came with a Summer Shandy, Berry Weiss, Sunset Wheat, and Honey Weiss. They're all pretty tasty, except the Berry. It tastes a little too much like a wine cooler. The Honey Weiss tastes similar to the Sam Adams Honey Porter. The Summer Shandy is Weiss beer mixed with real lemonade and it's pretty good. The Sunset Wheat is badass though. It's got a fruity pebbles kind of taste to it, but it is still really good and really smooth.

leinenkugel's sunset wheat; brought to you by kellogg's
I'd never heard of that Holy Grail before a few days ago, but now it seems to be popping up all over the place.
Tried an Austrian brew called Stieglbock last night and it was very tasty. Not by any means a "purist" beer, but I found it very unique, bold and sweet almost to the point of being dessert-like.
Now drinking Abita Fleur-de-lis Restoration Ale. Solid malt, milder hops than some of the other American pale ales I've had (Sierra Nevada, Anchor Liberty). This is a good beer, and a dollar of every six pack sale goes to help rebuild New Orleans. I bought this on the strength of some of Abita's other beers and I don't regret the purchase at all.

On the other end of the color spectrum I took care of a six-pack of Sam Adams White this weekend.

A Witbier is made similar to a Weizen, but made with the spices and citrus flavors. What you drank was not technically a wheat beer...hence the difference.

Tried Lagunita's Gnarleywine recently...
Not too impressed, especially since I have been spoiled with Dogfish's Oldeschool barleywine. For those not familiar with the style, it is usually a hopped up, malty high abv monster that usually has a lot of residual sugars left behind to sweeten it up.
Really this one was bland and over-carbonated for this particular style. No hop
character either which is usually prevalent but not overstated.
Even Sierra Nevada's Bigfoot is better than this but I'll try anything once and I've done my service here.
Eesh.
Is a saison supposed to taste lightstruck? I suspect the answer's no, but I've never had one before and I want to be sure. This must be the beer my friend who was drunk the other night was referring to as Ommegagger Hewsacker. To me it just sounded pissy. Got any good ideas for maybe an import that can be found at American bars?
I'm thinking about going out tonight (I know I am Sunday) and would like to enjoy some new kinds of drinks. I think the 10 Vodka Sours I had on my birthday were more than enough of those for a while.
This must be the beer my friend who was drunk the other night was referring to as Ommegagger Hewsacker. To me it just sounded pissy.
Probably one and the same. Compounding my frustration is the fact that I found the Ommegang Dubbel to be positively fantastic. Consequently, part of me just doesn't want to believe that this brewery could create a beer I don't like.
Got any good ideas for maybe an import that can be found at American bars?
Imports? Look for Boddingtons, Hoegaarden, or -- if you're lucky -- Leffe Blonde, a sentimental favorite of mine. But to be honest, there aren't any good imports that I've seen offered across the board at American bars. (I'd make an exception for Guinness, which is a genuinely good stout served everywhere.) You're probably better off looking for one of the good American beers -- in your area, most likely something from Goose Island, New Belgium, Breckenridge, Rogue, or Dogfish Head. (These are guesses, of course. I have no idea what's actually served in the Dakotas.)

Poured a coppery color that was crystal clear (you could read through it) and a thick white head with lots of lacing. I've come to like this brewery for their over abundant use of hops in most of their brews.
Sweet caramel taste with a nice hoppy bite on the tail end. Maybe not for bitter lovers like myself but that's my thing. Very crisp and easily drinkable with moderate carbonation. Not sure of the abv but it's probably in the 5-6% range based on the OG printed on the bottle.
I recommend to anyone with a sweet tooth for red ales or IPA's...

Report: Climate change will threaten beer production
By Caroline McCarthy, CNET news.com
We all know already that climate change will affect everything from food prices to cute baby polar bears.
But now it's really hitting home, folks. A report from a researcher at the National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research in New Zealand suggests that rising temperatures may threaten beer.
An Associated Press report details the findings from climate scientist Jim Salinger, who presented his research at the Institute of Brewing and Distilling's annual convention in Wellington, New Zealand. The grim results? Climate change may affect the production of malting barley, an ingredient crucial to the tasty beers we all know and love.
If we aren't careful, the regions in Australia and New Zealand in which malting barley can grow could experience some tragic shrinkage. Salinger's study didn't extend beyond those two countries, but he did warn that "similar effects could be expected" across the globe.
"It will mean either there will be pubs without beer or the cost of beer will go up," the Associated Press article quoted Salinger as saying.

I suppose. It's really not all that bad anymore. You use to be able to buy it real cheap and it tasted horrible, but they kind of went through some changes and while it's still a simple lager, it tastes alot better than it use to and costs a whole lot more as well.

i'm going toa bar tonight for a party to "welcome dogfish head to san francisco"-- they've never had their beers out here before, so it's a happy day for people who live out here. . . i can't wait to see which ones they have-- i'll be drinking fantastic draught beer in a few hours. . . .

Eesh.
Is a saison supposed to taste lightstruck? I suspect the answer's no, but I've never had one before and I want to be sure. I just got into the fourpack of Ommegang Hennepin I bought on Tuesday, and the beer tastes really, really skunky. I'm really disappointed -- I'd heard this was one of the best beers of its kind and I was really looking forward to drinking it. I want to give it another try, but the prospect of drinking through three more bad bottles just to try my luck again is looking really unappealing right now.
no, hennepin shouldn't taste like that-- take it back to the store, they should exchange it for you. . . .
Too late. Although the other bottles definitely tasted better... still a little of that flavor, but not nearly as bad. I'll just count this one as a learning experience and hope to try the beer again sometime under better circumstances. Thanks for the advice though, I'll remember that in the future!
Tonight I bought some Paulaner Salvator Double Bock and some Shock Top Belgian White. The Paulaner is badass. I haven't had the Shock Top yet. I've never tried it, but it was different and it was there. Those two sixxers together cost me $19!
Alright...just broke open the first Shock Top. It wasn't cold yet, but I couldn't stand it anymore. It's WAY better than Blue Moon. It's a little more orange tasting (which I should have guessed by the orange slice wearing sunglasses on the box) than Blue Moon, but has a fuller flavor, isn't as cloudy, and is less filling (which is good for people like me who go for quantity as well as quality). It really is a wonder how I don't weigh 300 pounds from all the beer I drink.
Picked up a selection of individual bottles at World Market on Monday. Last night it was a Sierra Nevada Porter while grilling up some steaks -- good stuff! Maybe a little hoppier than I prefer, but I like porters in general and enjoyed this one.
Tonight it'll be either the Dogfish Head Indian Brown, or the Black Sheep Holy Grail Ale. Haven't decided which yet, will probably be a game-time choice.

i've enjoyed a pretty good selection of beers out here-- mostly IPAs, no surprise. . . the lagunitas is a good session IPA, mild and citrusy-- it's similar to bell's two-hearted ale. . . mad river brewing's steelhead imperial IPA is very solid-- tough, thick and bitter. . . local brewery speakeasy makes a big daddy IPA and a double daddy imperial version, both very drinkable. . . anderson valley brewing also has an imperial IPA right now. . . and i can get deschuttes brews here also-- the mirror pond pale ale and the inversion IPA. . .
i also had dogfish head's midas touch and palo santo marron on tap yesterday. . . .

Ah, the pressures of work! Some days my job sucks...others, not so much! My duties consisted of travelling with some Assembly Members to Cooperstown NY, where we held a hearing on job, population, and business loss in Upstate NY (hint: High taxes and moronic government will do it every time). Finished the day with a tour of Brewery Ommegang, a Belgian style microbrewery, complete with samples of all their wares.
I'm not a huge fan of Belgian style beers as a rule, but this stuff was very nice. I ended up buying a bunch for later use. Their "3 Philosophers" was my favorite.

The beer journey continues. Had the Dogfish Head Indian Brown about a week ago. That one takes the gold medal from the last batch of beers I purchased, it's a real standout in a style (the brown ale) that I've always liked. A close second was the Rogue Mocha porter, and the third-place finish goes to the Black Sheep Holy Grail Ale, a pleasant-enough English pale notable mostly for being associated with a great film. The latter two were enjoyed (and the use of that verb is intentional) while watching the first day of the NFL draft.
Tonight, drank my first-ever Trois Pistoles. It's good and I'll be very happy to drink the three remaining bottles, but unlike the Ommegang Dubbel, I don't think it's really in the same league with the Belgian beers that inspired it. Still, I've been pretty impressed with the Unibroue beers and I'm looking forward to opening the 750ml Blanche de Chambly in my fridge.

On another note I finally broke into the Meph stout. All I can say is Holy Shit!!
I sipped that for probably 3 hrs, it was like an aged cognac. The initial taste was of dates, chocolate, prunes, and coffee, wow, super complex. I know it's fermented with turbinado sugar which probably helped impart a toffee flavor as well. I was blown away by the alcohol warmth on the tail end of drinking this. I seriously was buzzed off this for a couple hours...very good stuff!! Oh yeah, I held it to a 100 watt halogen and still couldn't get any light to pass through...

Wild Blue - HORRIBLE STAY AWAY from this supposed Blueberry lager which won gold medal from the North America Brewer's Ass. Looks like grape soda and taste worse then wine. The only thing going for it is 8.0 ALC, which if you can swill down 4 or 5 might make you forget the taste

I'm sure some do not like it, but I love 1664(having one right now).:D
At first I thought you miss typed and meant 1554 but then I googled it and
found what your talking about. Sounds interesting from the description I read.
I've never seen it here but I will try it if I ever do.

Man, I like you more and more. That's my favorite beer! :salute:
The Amber is going down smooth tonight watching a little basketball. Nieces and nephew are here with mother/sister in law. Alot of whiny kids in the house (2,3,4,5 yr olds) so thank god for great beer!:twitch:

Busch:
It pours a pale yellow straw color with a foamy white head. The body is very clear and clean with plenty of carbonation. The aroma is mostly salty and hay like. A metal can note is also detected in the nose. The taste is very light. Light malts cut with rice are most noticeable. It's also salty and has some very light bitterness to it. Busch is light bodied and thin with lots of fizzy carbonation. The finish is dry and abrupt.
