It's been mentioned in a half dozen threads already.

Before Doom's debacle we were roughly $50k under. Doom has been released saving $7mil of cap space.

Cutting Kuper and Mays would clear another 5 or so I believe, best guess.

Mays is worth $4mil alone

Mays is worth $4mil alone

What about guaranteed money? If I am correct then cutting him will cause the entirety of his remaining guarantee to be immediately owed, best guess is that it about 1.5 to 2 million in itself since he just signed a new contract last off-season. Kuper has far more guaranteed then Mays.

I think the combined nunber for both is around 6 mil.

You're worth way more than that to me.

Before Doom's debacle we were roughly $50k under. Doom has been released saving $7mil of cap space.

FWIW, I think that number is off a bit, even though I know it's been thrown around by reporters.

I think they have been double counting about $1.6 million of "dead money."

For '13, Doom was scheduled to make $12 million, but his cap number was higher, because there was $1.62 million in pro-rated cap allocation from early signing/roster bonuses that were spread over the life of the contract. So, his '13 cap number was roughly $13.62.

The problem is that reporters that don't understand the numbers, talk about the Broncos saving $12 million in cap space (by releasing Doom), but then they say that savings is offset by a $4.9 million cap hit, leaving the Broncos with about $7.1 million left under the cap.

The problem is that $1.6 million is being counted both in the starting point of $50k under cap AND in the dead money that''s being accelerated. But, that's wrong.

There was already $1.6 million of that $4.9 being counted for 2013 when the Broncos were $50k under cap.

So, long story, longer. If you start at the 50k under mark (let's just call it $0 space for ease), you then add the $12 million for his salary, which would say the Broncos have $12 million in space, but you then have to subtract $3.2 for the portion of Dooms dead money that wasn't already counted in the cap space (again, $1.62 was always going to be counted in 2013).

This means the Broncos have roughly $8.8 million in cap space after cutting Doom.

Mays' gauranteed money has already went against the cap, save for $500.000 of his '13 salary. According to Rotoworld.......

Time to cut Kuper and Mays and they should have enough for another pass rusher and the draft picks. I would like to see them bring back Dan Koppen, he really played well last year.

OK, lets say we make the cut to Mays, end up about 12 million in cap space. Whats your move ?

They're gonna bring in another FA or two and they have the draft. And if they don't pursue Doom or sign a FA pass rushing DE, I would fully expect them to look at the draft from Doom's replacement.

I'm not so sure we're going to see much more by the Broncos other then adding another defensive end or at least a situational pass rusher. I expect the Broncos biggest concern may be to get Ryan Clady under contract for some cap relief.

Ravage!!!

I thought guaranteed money was equally divided up between the years of the contract. So how could it all be used up if he just signed a new contract last season?

No, only certain bonuses are spread. I haven't looked at May's contract to see the breakdown of signing bonus to salary.

According to Rotoworld's breakdown (fwiw) Mays had $4.5 mil gauranteed, a $500.000 signing bonus, his entire $4 mil '12 salary and $500.000 of his '13 salary. From my point of view that's about $600.000 in dead money.......

My bad, it's actually $833k

The breakdown is:
$500 guaranteed '13 salary
$333 Prorated signing bonus (2/3 of $500k)

So the Broncos would gain roughly 3 million if they cut Mays, so I was off a little but the Broncos would not save 4 as suggested. I believe releasing Kuper would give them far more cap relief.

They're both likely to be cut.

They're both likely to be cut.

That is what I thought as well, but I'm surprised they did not do so before now...to at least give them a chance in a fair market, and to clear the cap before the official start of the new NFL year.

Kuper and Mays can't be cut until they either pass a physical or reach and injury settlement.

On top of that, I don't think either will be cut until after the draft. We probably won't give up 2 players that we don't know if we can replace until after the draft (and the Doom situation) plays out.

They can be released at any time.
