I don't think they have much money to do much more damage in Free Agency Coach, depending on who else they cut, I'm sure this restructure only clears about four, maybe five million.

The Broncos remain the best in the league off the edge, and with Wolfe one year
older, bigger, and more experienced, and 660 lbs. of beef between Knighton and
Big Vick (not to mention the addition of DRC), that is shaping up as a terrifying

2 p.m. (MST) today was when the league's calendar year started. his restructured contract had to be in, signed, notorized, whatever by that time. it wasn't. i'm not sure what this means, exactly, but klis' twitter feed suggests there are serious salary cap issues.

Denver Native (Carol)

Broncos could still sign Elvis Dumervil but there are salary cap implications. Not that simple.

Broncos didn't get fax with Elvis Dumervil signature on contract until 2:07 p.m. -- 7 minutes and 1 second past the deadline!

I'm serious. Contract was not filed by 1:59 p.m. Elvis Dumervil informed Broncos he was taking the new deal at 1:25.

Hold on, contract not filed in time. Elvis Dumervil has been officially released

Correction: It was 1:25 when Mike Sullivan interrupted Elway-Fox Plan B meeting to say: "He took the deal.''

Mike Sullivan told Elway and Fox: He took the deal

How close was it? Elway and Fox were having Plan B meeting at 1:15, thinking Elvis was gone. And then contract guru Mike Sullivan walked in

He is still under his previous contract because the deadline passed. Had they restructured before 2pm MST, the old contract would've been void and the new, restructured one would've been in effect. But because they failed to file the new contract in time, he's owed whatever it was for this year on his "old" contract.

As I understand it, if the Broncos would've wanted to file for an extension to the 2pm deadline to finish negotiations, they would have had to file BEFORE 2pm to get the extension. I could be wrong.

Elvis Dumervil has been released by the Broncos despite reaching an agreement with the team around 1:25 p.m. Friday.

The Broncos say Dumervil's agent Marty Magid didn't get a restructured contract signed in time and the team had no choice but to release him. The team didnt' get the fax with Dumervil's signature until 2:07 p.m., seven minutes and one second after the deadline.

The Broncos had to protect themselves at 1:59 p.m. when they had not received a signed deal. Had they not released Dumervil, $12 million would have been guaranteed.

Well now I'm hearing thatthe Broncos actually released him at 1:59 and avoided the cap hit. Sounds like the screw up was on Doom's side. Maybe intentional.

They avoided the $12 million cap hit in terms of that was what his salary was. However, by releasing him, they accelerated the signing bonus that was prorated over the life of the contract, and now have taken a $4.7 million cap hit (dead money).

So, let's say they resigned him to $8 million contract this evening (what they had agreed on), his cap number this year would be effectively $12.7 million vs. the $12 million it would have been if they had paid him his full 2013 salary. They will still have saved $4 million in cash, but saved no money in cap and might actually be worse off by half a million or so.

Considering they agreed on terms, this was a colossal disaster.

Problem is he didn't get a $4.8 million check (unless I'm missing something). The $4.7 million was the portion of his signing bonus (that was paid three years ago) that would have been spread over the next three years, that the Broncos now have to count against this years cap.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not angry at Elway and I'm not angry at Doom (they had a gentlemen's agreement at 1:25) but unless they can get this sorted out this is a massive cluster ****.

I just can't believe that something as stupid as a fax can cost the team nearly 5 million dollars and a great player. Damn I hope this gets sorted out. I really want to punch Doom's agent in the face repeatedly.

It wasn't an accident, unless you think they are unable to read a clock.

It was a big eff you to the Broncos.

i'm listening to Alfred Williams on the radio. he's also entertaining the idea of conspiracy/collusion regarding the late fax.

he's pointing a lot of blame at doom, wondering aloud that he got a similar offer from another team.

he also says he thinks doom will be playing for ATL next season. pure speculation on his part.
Alfred is retarded. I'm grateful for his time and effort as a Bronco, but that man is as dumb a human being as I have ever had the misfortune of listening to.

Sullivan at 1:25 told the Broncos that the deal was done. They needed the signed contract. Elway was on the phone with Doom stating there are other ways to get them the signed contract, other than FAX. The signed contract was received by the Broncos at 2:06, via FAX. They had an email confirming the agreement, but they needed the signed contract.

Above info from DMac on the fan

Yeah, NFL.com says the fax machine was on the fritz but Dooms agent is stuck in 1980 so he couldn't figure out another way to get the contract sent.

That's possible, but it may not be Doom's fault either. As I said either way, someone or a number of them screwed the pooch on this. If his agent is at fault, I'd fire his ass right quick, if Doom had part to play then I would move on without his ass - but it's still bitter, no matter which way you slice it.

more alfred williams stuff: he says he talked to some in the broncos organization and that they gave elvis permission to listen to other offers throughout this past week and that denver gave him the best deal. sounds a little self-serving, but could be true.

DMac says he talked to an "nfl executive" who said it sounds like doom and the agent gave denver an FU.

Congratulations Broncos, now you can eat a 4 million dollar cap hit AND try to find some second rate, over the hill POS like Freeney or Osi who will just eat up the majority of the 8 million you just saved cutting Doom.

Oh and, ROBERT AYERS SUCKS ASS!!! Screw that bust. They should've cut his worthless ass for the cap space to pay Dumervil. Unbelievably pissed off right now. This was a huge screwup by both our FO and Dumervil's agent. Damn I'm pissed!

As pissed off as i am right now with you im hearing a lot that its on his agent. According to most the contract was signed at 1:25 and the doofus agent didnt send it in on time. Sounds like the agent was looking out for his own interest instead of his clients. His ass would be gone if i was Elvis.

All signs point to more players getting cut then. My guess is Joe Mays.

Exactly. That's the part I don't get. If this were just an issue of Doom trying to give the Broncos the middle finger, why would he have sent back the contract at all? On top of that, I read that at 1:54, Elvis sent out text messages to teammates saying he'd be back. It just doesn't make any damned sense at all. While there is a slim chance that Doom could get a big payday elsewhere most of the commentators i was listening too on the way home agreed with Chaz's point about the average that the DE's in FA make which is around $6 mil. So its an awful risk to intentionally do that only to take less money. I agree that i think the agent just fubared here.

At 1:25 p.m. Broncos contract man Mike Sullivan interrupted Fox-Elway meeting to say Elvis took the deal.

Broncos gave Elvis Dumervil and agent Marty Magid a 1 p.m. deadline to decide. When 1 p.m came and went, Elway-Fox huddled to talk plan B.

Dead money means it's money that counts against the cap but isn't being paid to a player.

That's what I thought but was hoping I was wrong. Since the team doesn't have to actually spend the money, it won't count towards Bowlens pocket book. They are going to have a hard time getting Doom to sign an even lower contract now though, as they don't have the cap for that $8 mil.

I really have to laugh at the drama queens thinking Doom and his agent did this on purpose. They knew just as well as anyone that this makes it much harder for him to get paid. It doesn't sound like others want to give him more and it won't be easy for this team to pay that same $8 mil now. In order for that conspiracy theory to be right, they intentionally screwed themselves in order to screw the Broncos. That would require a lot of hate for the Broncos on their part.
