Quarterback help?

Broncos coach Josh McDaniels and general manager Brian Xanders will sit down with quarterback Ingle Martin this morning. If Martin passes the interview, he could be practicing with the Broncos this afternoon.

The Broncos could use quarterback depth after backup Chris Simms suffered a sprained left ankle during Saturday's game in Seattle.

While Simms has shed the crutches and is recovering nicely, he is not expected to play in the final two preseason games — Sunday against Chicago and Sept. 3 against Arizona.

That would leave the Broncos with starter Kyle Orton and rookie Tom Brandstater for the final two games. The Broncos don't want Orton playing much against Arizona, and the game seemed to be moving too fast for Brandstater in his debut against Seattle.

Martin, 27, was drafted from Furman in the fifth round by Green Bay in 2006 and has since been employed by Tennessee and Kansas City. Martin, who began his college career at Florida, can also be used as an emergency punter and kicker.

We need another vet QB, if Orton were to go down Brandstater would be the only healthy QB we would have taking reps getting ready for game 1. that scares the h*ll out of me.
Something else that is suspcious is the Broncos have been very vague at best about injuries but now we get a optimistic press release saying Simms will be out for up to 4 weeks. Can't help but think this is a smoke screen and Simms is hurt worse than they'll admit right now.

The Broncos signed free agent quarterback Ingle Martin today and plan on playing the veteran in their preseason finale against the Arizona Cardinals Sept. 3.

Martin, who has spent time with the Titans and Chiefs after being a fifth-round pick by the Packers in '06, worked out for the Broncos Tuesday evening.

The team saw enough in the workout to sign Martin this morning. With Chris Simms recovering from a severely sprained left ankle and not expected to play in the remainder of the preseason, Kyle Orton and rookie Tom Brandstater will split time in the preseason game Sunday night against the Bears.

Martin would then be available to play against the Cardinals. Martin attended team meetings this morning and was going to practice.
